Efficient Empiricism: Streamlining Teaching, Research, and Learning in Empirical Courses
The increasing importance of empirical analysis in economics highlights the need for efficient ways to bring these skills to the classroom. R Markdown is a new technology that provides a solution by integrating writing, statistical work and computation into a single document. R Markdown benefits students and instructors by streamlining teaching, research, and collaboration. We report on our use of R Markdown in undergraduate teaching, including core courses, electives, and senior theses. We discuss the costs and benefits of adoption, and explain the advantages of R Markdown in teaching reproducibility of empirical work, avoiding time-consuming and error-prone âcut and paste,â and facilitating a one-stop solution for importing, cleaning, manipulating, visualizing and communicating with data
Prenatal Stress due to a Natural Disaster Predicts Adiposity in Childhood: The Iowa Flood Study
Prenatal stress can affect lifelong physical growth, including increased obesity risk. However, human studies remain limited. Natural disasters provide models of independent stressors unrelated to confounding maternal characteristics. We assessed degree of objective hardship and subjective distress in women pregnant during severe flooding. At ages 2.5 and 4 years we assessed body mass index (BMI), subscapular plus triceps skinfolds (SS + TR, an index of total adiposity), and SS: TR ratio (an index of central adiposity) in their children (n=106). Hierarchical regressions controlled first for several potential confounds. Controlling for these, flood exposure during early gestation predicted greater BMI increase from age 2.5 to 4, as well as total adiposity at 2.5. Greater maternal hardship and distress due to the floods, as well as other nonflood life events during pregnancy, independently predicted greater increase in total adiposity between 2.5 and 4 years. These results support the hypothesis that prenatal stress increases adiposity beginning in childhood and suggest that early gestation is a sensitive period. Results further highlight the additive effects of maternal objective and subjective stress, life events, and depression, emphasizing the importance of continued studies on multiple, detailed measures of maternal mental health and experience in pregnancy and child growth
Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory versus local-density approximation for superfluid trapped fermionic atoms
We investigate a gas of superfluid fermionic atoms trapped in two hyperfine
states by a spherical harmonic potential. We propose a new regularization
method to remove the ultraviolet divergence in the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov
equations caused by the use of a zero-range atom-atom interaction. Compared
with a method used in the literature, our method is simpler and has improved
convergence properties. Then we compare Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations
with the semiclassical local-density approximation. We observe that for systems
containing a small number of atoms shell effects, which cannot be reproduced by
the semiclassical calculation, are very important. For systems with a large
number of atoms at zero temperature the two calculations are in quite good
agreement, which, however, is deteriorated at non-zero temperature, especially
near the critical temperature. In this case the different behavior can be
explained within the Ginzburg-Landau theory.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, revtex; v2: references and clarifying remarks

Morphology controls the thermoelectric power factor of a doped semiconducting polymer
The electrical performance of doped semiconducting polymers is strongly governed by processing methods and underlying thin-film microstructure. We report on the influence of different doping methods (solution versus vapor) on the thermoelectric power factor (PF) of PBTTT molecularly p-doped with FnTCNQ (n = 2 or 4). The vapor-doped films have more than two orders of magnitude higher electronic conductivity (s) relative to solution-doped films. On the basis of resonant soft x-ray scattering, vapor-doped samples are shown to have a large orientational correlation length (OCL) (that is, length scale of aligned backbones) that correlates to a high apparent charge carrier mobility (m). The Seebeck coefficient (a) is largely independent of OCL. This reveals that, unlike s, leveraging strategies to improve m have a smaller impact on a. Our best-performing sample with the largest OCL, vapor-doped PBTTT: F4TCNQ thin film, has a s of 670 S/cm and an a of 42 ÎŒV/K, which translates to a large PF of 120 mW m-1 K-2. In addition, despite the unfavorable offset for charge transfer, doping by F2TCNQ also leads to a large PF of 70 ÎŒW m-1 K-2, which reveals the potential utility of weak molecular dopants. Overall, our work introduces important general processing guidelines for the continued development of doped semiconducting polymers for thermoelectrics
Hydration strategies of professional elite rugby league referees during super league matches
Due to the focus of research within athletic populations, little is known about the hydration strategies of rugby league referees. We observed all 8 full-time professional referees, during 31 Super League matches to investigate the drinking strategies and magnitude of dehydration (body mass loss) experienced by referees during match play. Referees arrived and remained euhydrated (urine osmolality; pre and post-match 558 ± 310 and 466 ± 283 mOsmolâąkg-1). Mean body mass change was -0.7 ± 0.8%, fluid loss was 890 ± 435 g and fluid intake was 444 ± 167, 438 ± 190, 254 ± 108 and 471 ± 221 g during pre-match, first-half, half-time and second-half. This study suggests elite referees adopt appropriate hydration strategies during match-play to prevent large reductions in body mass, although individual variability was observed. Future research should investigate dehydration in referees from other sports and the effects on refereeing performance
Waiting times between orders and trades in double-auction markets
In this paper, the survival function of waiting times between orders and the
corresponding trades in a double-auction market is studied both by means of
experiments and of empirical data. It turns out that, already at the level of
order durations, the survival function cannot be represented by a single
exponential, thus ruling out the hypothesis of constant activity during
trading. This fact has direct consequences for market microstructural models.
They must include such a non-exponential behaviour to be realistic.Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures, paper presented at the WEHIA 2005, Colchester,

Quadratic fermionic interactions yield effective Hamiltonians for adiabatic quantum computing
Polynomially-large ground-state energy gaps are rare in many-body quantum
systems, but useful for adiabatic quantum computing. We show analytically that
the gap is generically polynomially-large for quadratic fermionic Hamiltonians.
We then prove that adiabatic quantum computing can realize the ground states of
Hamiltonians with certain random interactions, as well as the ground states of
one, two, and three-dimensional fermionic interaction lattices, in polynomial
time. Finally, we use the Jordan-Wigner transformation and a related
transformation for spin-3/2 particles to show that our results can be restated
using spin operators in a surprisingly simple manner. A direct consequence is
that the one-dimensional cluster state can be found in polynomial time using
adiabatic quantum computing.Comment: 14 page
Sensor Systems for Prognostics and Health Management
Prognostics and health management (PHM) is an enabling discipline consisting of technologies and methods to assess the reliability of a product in its actual life cycle conditions to determine the advent of failure and mitigate system risk. Sensor systems are needed for PHM to monitor environmental, operational, and performance-related characteristics. The gathered data can be analyzed to assess product health and predict remaining life. In this paper, the considerations for sensor system selection for PHM applications, including the parameters to be measured, the performance needs, the electrical and physical attributes, reliability, and cost of the sensor system, are discussed. The state-of-the-art sensor systems for PHM and the emerging trends in technologies of sensor systems for PHM are presented
Iterative feature removal yields highly discriminative pathways
BACKGROUND: We introduce Iterative Feature Removal (IFR) as an unbiased approach for selecting features with diagnostic capacity from large data sets. The algorithm is based on recently developed tools in machine learning that are driven by sparse feature selection goals. When applied to genomic data, our method is designed to identify genes that can provide deeper insight into complex interactions while remaining directly connected to diagnostic utility. We contrast this approach with the search for a minimal best set of discriminative genes, which can provide only an incomplete picture of the biological complexity. RESULTS: Microarray data sets typically contain far more features (genes) than samples. For this type of data, we demonstrate that there are many equivalently-predictive subsets of genes. We iteratively train a classifier using features identified via a sparse support vector machine. At each iteration, we remove all the features that were previously selected. We found that we could iterate many times before a sustained drop in accuracy occurs, with each iteration removing approximately 30 genes from consideration. The classification accuracy on test data remains essentially flat even as hundreds of top-genes are removed. Our method identifies sets of genes that are highly predictive, even when comprised of genes that individually are not. Through automated and manual analysis of the selected genes, we demonstrate that the selected features expose relevant pathways that other approaches would have missed. CONCLUSIONS: Our results challenge the paradigm of using feature selection techniques to design parsimonious classifiers from microarray and similar high-dimensional, small-sample-size data sets. The fact that there are many subsets of genes that work equally well to classify the data provides a strong counter-result to the notion that there is a small number of âtop genesâ that should be used to build classifiers. In our results, the best classifiers were formed using genes with limited univariate power, thus illustrating that deeper mining of features using multivariate techniques is important
Subduction or sagduction? Ambiguity in constraining the origin of ultramaficâmafic bodies in the Archean crust of NW Scotland
The Lewisian Complex of NW Scotland is a fragment of the North Atlantic Craton. It comprises mostly Archean tonaliteâtrondhjemiteâgranodiorite (TTG) orthogneisses that were variably metamorphosed and reworked in the late Neoarchean to Paleoproterozoic. Within the granulite facies central region of the mainland Lewisian Complex, discontinuous belts composed of ultramaficâmafic rocks and structurally overlying garnetâbiotite gneiss (brown gneiss) are spatially associated with steeply-inclined amphibolite facies shear zones that have been interpreted as terrane boundaries. Interpretation of the primary chemical composition of these rocks is complicated by partial melting and melt loss during granulite facies metamorphism, and contamination with melts derived from the adjacent migmatitic TTG host rocks. Notwithstanding, the composition of the layered ultramaficâmafic rocks is suggestive of a protolith formed by differentiation of tholeiitic magma, where the ultramafic portions of these bodies represent the metamorphosed cumulates and the mafic portions the metamorphosed fractionated liquids. Although the composition of the brown gneiss does not clearly discriminate the protolith, it most likely represents a metamorphosed sedimentary or volcano-sedimentary sequence. For Archean rocks, particularly those metamorphosed to granulite facies, the geochemical characteristics typically used for discrimination of paleotectonic environments are neither strictly appropriate nor clearly diagnostic. Many of the rocks in the Lewisian Complex have âarc-likeâ trace element signatures. These signatures are interpreted to reflect derivation from hydrated enriched mantle and, in the case of the TTG gneisses, partial melting of amphibolite source rocks containing garnet and a Ti-rich phase, probably rutile. However, it is becoming increasingly recognised that in Archean rocks such signatures may not be unique to a subduction environment but may relate to processes such as delamination and dripping. Consequently, it is unclear whether the Lewisian ultramaficâmafic rocks and brown gneisses represent products of plate margin or intraplate magmatism. Although a subduction-related origin is possible, we propose that an intraplate origin is equally plausible. If the second alternative is correct, the ultramaficâmafic rocks and brown gneisses may represent the remnants of intracratonic greenstone belts that sank into the deep crust due to their density contrast with the underlying partially molten low viscosity TTG orthogneisses
