Formation of nanoscale ferromagnetic MnAs crystallites in low-temperature grown GaAs

    Get PDF
3 páginas, 3 figuras, 1 tabla. We report the formation of nanosize ferromagnetic MnAs crystallites imbedded in low-temperature grown GaAs using Mn+ ion implantation and subsequent annealing. The structural and magnetic properties of the crystallites have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy, electron beam induced x-ray fluorescence, and superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. After an optimized thermal annealing at 750 °C, MnAs crystallites of 50 nm in size are formed. These nanomagnets show room temperature ferromagnetism. This work has been supported by QUEST, an NSF Science and Technology center (Grant No. DMR91.20007). Luminosity Measurement in the L3 Detector at LEP

    Get PDF
One of the limiting factors in the determination of the electroweak parameters from cross section measurements of e+e- annihilation close to the Z pole is the precision of the luminosity measurement. The luminosity monitor of the L3 detector at LEP and the analysis of its data are described. Using a combination of a BGO calorimeter and a 3-layer silicon tracker, the absolute luminosity has been measured with an experimental precision of 0.08% in 1993 and 0.05% in 1994. The measurement relies on a detailed understanding of small-angle elastic e+e-(Bhabha) scattering from the experimental and theoretical point of view, as well as an excellent knowledge of the detector geometry

Search for Charginos with a Small Mass Difference with the Lightest Supersymmetric Particle at \sqrt{s} = 189 GeV

    Get PDF
A search for charginos nearly mass-degenerate with the lightest supersymmetric particle is performed using the 176 pb^-1 of data collected at 189 GeV in 1998 with the L3 detector. Mass differences between the chargino and the lightest supersymmetric particle below 4 GeV are considered. The presence of a high transverse momentum photon is required to single out the signal from the photon-photon interaction background. No evidence for charginos is found and upper limits on the cross section for chargino pair production are set. For the first time, in the case of heavy scalar leptons, chargino mass limits are obtained for any \tilde{\chi}^{+-}_1 - \tilde{\chi}^0_1 mass difference

Sufism and Liberation across the Indo-Afghan Border: 1880-1928

    Get PDF
How do we understand links between sufism and pro-egalitarian revolutionary activism in the early twentieth century; and how did upland compositions of self and community help constitute revolutionary activism in South Asia more broadly? Using Pashto poetry as my archive I integrate a history of radical egalitarian thought and political practice to a holistic study of self-making; of imperial spatiality; and of shifting gradients of power in the regions between Kabul and Punjab. Amid a chaotic rise of new practices of imperial and monarchic hegemony around the turn of the twentieth century, I argue, older sedimentations of ‘devotee selfhood’ in the high valleys of eastern Afghanistan gave rise, in social spaces preserved by self-reflexive poetic practice and circulation, to conscious desires for avoidance of all forms of hierarchy or sovereignty, in favour of a horizontal politics of reciprocity. Such inchoate drives for freedom later played a role in constituting anti-statist revolutionary subjectivities across great geographical and social distance. From upland sufi roots they rippled outward to intersect with the work of transnational socialist and anti-imperialist militants in Indian nationalist circles too; and even influenced scholars at the heart of the nascent Afghan nation-state

Observation of an Excited Bc+ State

Using pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.5 fb-1 recorded by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of s=7, 8, and 13 TeV, the observation of an excited Bc+ state in the Bc+π+π- invariant-mass spectrum is reported. The observed peak has a mass of 6841.2±0.6(stat)±0.1(syst)±0.8(Bc+) MeV/c2, where the last uncertainty is due to the limited knowledge of the Bc+ mass. It is consistent with expectations of the Bc∗(2S31)+ state reconstructed without the low-energy photon from the Bc∗(1S31)+→Bc+Îł decay following Bc∗(2S31)+→Bc∗(1S31)+π+π-. A second state is seen with a global (local) statistical significance of 2.2σ (3.2σ) and a mass of 6872.1±1.3(stat)±0.1(syst)±0.8(Bc+) MeV/c2, and is consistent with the Bc(2S10)+ state. These mass measurements are the most precise to date

Search for CP violation in D+→K−K+π+D^{+} \to K^{-}K^{+}\pi^{+} decays

    Get PDF
A model-independent search for direct CP violation in the Cabibbo suppressed decay D+→K−K+π+D^+ \to K^- K^+\pi^+ in a sample of approximately 370,000 decays is carried out. The data were collected by the LHCb experiment in 2010 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35 pb−1^{-1}. The normalized Dalitz plot distributions for D+D^+ and D−D^- are compared using four different binning schemes that are sensitive to different manifestations of CP violation. No evidence for CP asymmetry is found.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

Observation of associated production of a ZZ boson with a DD meson in the~forward region

    Get PDF
A search for associated production of a ZZ boson with an open charm meson is presented using a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−‘1.0\,\mathrm{fb}^{-`} of proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7\,TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment. %% Seven candidate events for associated production of a ZZ boson with a D0D^0 meson and four candidate events for a ZZ boson with a D+D^+ meson are observed with a combined significance of 5.1standard deviations. The production cross-sections in the forward region are measured to be σZ→Ό+ÎŒâˆ’â€‰âŁ,D0=2.50±1.12±0.22pb\sigma_{Z\rightarrow\mu^+\mu^-\!,D^0} = 2.50\pm1.12\pm0.22pb σZ→Ό+ÎŒâˆ’â€‰âŁ,D+=0.44±0.23±0.03pb,\sigma_{Z\rightarrow\mu^+\mu^-\!,D^+} = 0.44\pm0.23\pm0.03pb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.Comment: 18 pages, 2 figure

Measurements of the B+B^+, B0B^0, Bs0B_s^0 meson and Λb0\Lambda_b^0 baryon lifetimes

    Get PDF
    Measurements of bb-hadron lifetimes are reported using pppp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb−1^{-1}, collected by the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 77Tev. Using the exclusive decays B+→J/ψK+B^+\to J/\psi K^+, B0→J/ψK∗(892)0B^0\to J/\psi K^*(892)^0, B0→J/ψKS0B^0\to J/\psi K^0_{\rm S}, Λb0→J/ψΛ\Lambda_b^0\to J/\psi \Lambda and Bs0→J/ψϕB^0_s\to J/\psi \phi the average decay times in these modes are measured to be τB+→J/ψK+\tau_{B^+\to J/\psi K^+} = 1.637±1.637 \pm 0.004 ±\pm 0.003 ps, τB0→J/ψK∗(892)0\tau_{B^0\to J/\psi K^*(892)^0} = 1.524±1.524 \pm 0.006 ±\pm 0.004 ps, τB0→J/ψKS0\tau_{B^0\to J/\psi K^0_{\rm S}} = 1.499±1.499 \pm 0.013 ±\pm 0.005 ps, τΛb0→J/ψΛ\tau_{\Lambda_b^0\to J/\psi \Lambda} = 1.415±1.415 \pm 0.027 ±\pm 0.006 ps and τBs0→J/ψϕ\tau_{B^0_s\to J/\psi \phi} = 1.480±1.480 \pm 0.011 ±\pm 0.005 ps, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. These represent the most precise lifetime measurements in these decay modes. In addition, ratios of these lifetimes, and the ratio of the decay-width difference, ΔΓd\Delta\Gamma_d, to the average width, Γd\Gamma_d, in the B0B^0 system, ΔΓd/Γd=−0.044±0.025±0.011\Delta \Gamma_d/\Gamma_d = -0.044 \pm 0.025 \pm 0.011, are reported. All quantities are found to be consistent with Standard Model expectations.Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures. Updated reference

Measurement of the CP-violating phase \phi s in Bs->J/\psi\pi+\pi- decays

    Get PDF
Measurement of the mixing-induced CP-violating phase phi_s in Bs decays is of prime importance in probing new physics. Here 7421 +/- 105 signal events from the dominantly CP-odd final state J/\psi pi+ pi- are selected in 1/fb of pp collision data collected at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV with the LHCb detector. A time-dependent fit to the data yields a value of phi_s=-0.019^{+0.173+0.004}_{-0.174-0.003} rad, consistent with the Standard Model expectation. No evidence of direct CP violation is found.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures; minor revisions on May 23, 201
