Influence of capillary properties and evaporation on salt weathering of sedimentary rocks

    No full text
International audienceThe importance of capillary imbibition and evaporation processes in the decay of stone through salt crystallization is estimated by different experiments adapted from the European standard EN 12370. The various tests consist in slightly modifying the salt (sodium sulphate) supply in the porous network of stones as well as the amount of evaporation and in checking the weathering evolution of the stone. The results show that ionic diffusion and dissolution of pre-existent salts are not efficient enough to imply supersaturation, hence to visually alter the stone. An exterior supply of salt is required. The influence of evaporation is clearly shown when evaporation process could not occur through a side of the sample. In this case, isolated sides are never subjected to weathering, even to simple salt efflorescence

Activation of amino acid metabolic program in cardiac HIF1-alpha-deficient mice.

HIF1-alpha expression defines metabolic compartments in the developing heart, promoting glycolytic program in the compact myocardium and mitochondrial enrichment in the trabeculae. Nonetheless, its role in cardiogenesis is debated. To assess the importance of HIF1-alpha during heart development and the influence of glycolysis in ventricular chamber formation, herein we generated conditional knockout models of Hif1a in Nkx2.5 cardiac progenitors and cardiomyocytes. Deletion of Hif1a impairs embryonic glycolysis without influencing cardiomyocyte proliferation and results in increased mitochondrial number and transient activation of amino acid catabolism together with HIF2α and ATF4 upregulation by E12.5. Hif1a mutants display normal fatty acid oxidation program and do not show cardiac dysfunction in the adulthood. Our results demonstrate that cardiac HIF1 signaling and glycolysis are dispensable for mouse heart development and reveal the metabolic flexibility of the embryonic myocardium to consume amino acids, raising the potential use of alternative metabolic substrates as therapeutic interventions during ischemic events. This project has been supported by Fundación Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares Carlos III (CNIC), Spain and by grants to S.M.-P. from the European Research Council, European Union, FP7-PEOPLE-2010-RG_276891; Fundación TV3 La Marató, Spain, 201507.30.31; Comunidad de Madrid (CAM); Spain and European Union (EU), B2017/BMD-3875; Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Spain, PI17/01817; Universidad Francisco de Vitoria (UFV), Spain and LeDucq Foundation, France, 17CVD04. Microwave heating as a novel route for obtaining carbon precursors from anthracene oil

    Get PDF
This work describes a novel route for the preparation of pitches by oxidative polymerization of an industrial anthracene oil (AO) in a microwave semi-pilot equipment consisting in a multimode applicator having a 2.45 GHz magnetron with variable microwave power. The experimental five variables of microwave heating of AO air-blowing range between 320-380 ˚C (temperature), 0.2 - 3.9 ˚C min-1 (heating rate), 1.5 - 5 h (soaking time), 16 – 20.5 % (air/AO ratio ) and 200 – 1500 g (initial weight). Their effect on the overall microwave air-blowing process is evaluated by means of a statistical analysis. A detailed characterization of the pitches has been carried out in terms of ultimate analysis, softening point, solubility parameters (toluene insolubles (TI) and quinoline insolubles (QI)) and thermogravimetric analysis. The experiments were also carried out by using conventional heating for comparative purposes. The detailed study of the electric energy consumption of the overall microwave treatment allows estimating a significant electric energy saving of about 20 % when compared to conventional heating thus representing an excellent result in the production of carbon precursors

Effect of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines and SARS-CoV-2 on antimicrobial resistance and the emergence of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes with reduced susceptibility in Spain, 2004-20: a national surveillance study

Background: Epidemiological studies are necessary to explore the effect of current pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) against antibiotic resistance, including the rise of non-vaccine serotypes that are resistant to antibiotics. Hence, epidemiological changes in the antimicrobial pattern of Streptococcus pneumoniae before and during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic were studied. Methods: In this national surveillance study, we characterised the antimicrobial susceptibility to a panel of antibiotics in 3017 pneumococcal clinical isolates with reduced susceptibility to penicillin during 2004-20 in Spain. This study covered the early and late PCV7 periods; the early, middle, and late PCV13 periods; and the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, to evaluate the contribution of PCVs and the pandemic to the emergence of non-vaccine serotypes associated with antibiotic resistance. Findings: Serotypes included in PCV7 and PCV13 showed a decline after the introduction of PCVs in Spain. However, an increase in non-PCV13 serotypes (mainly 11A, 24F, and 23B) that were not susceptible to penicillin promptly appeared. A rise in the proportion of pneumococcal strains with reduced susceptibility to β-lactams and erythromycin was observed in 2020, coinciding with the emergence of SARS-CoV-2. Cefditoren was the β-lactam with the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)50 or MIC90 values, and had the highest proportion of susceptible strains throughout 2004-20. Interpretation: The increase in non-PCV13 serotypes associated with antibiotic resistance is concerning, especially the increase of penicillin resistance linked to serotypes 11A and 24F. The future use of PCVs with an increasingly broad spectrum (such as PCV20, which includes serotype 11A) could reduce the impact of antibiotic resistance for non-PCV13 serotypes. The use of antibiotics to prevent co-infections in patients with COVID-19 might have affected the increased proportion of pneumococcal-resistant strains. Cefotaxime as a parenteral option, and cefditoren as an oral choice, were the antibiotics with the highest activity against non-PCV20 serotypes. This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (grant PID2020–119298RB-I00), Meiji Pharma Spain (grant MVP 119/20), and internal funding from Instituto de Salud Carlos III.S

The study of the surface quality of the pavement is of fundamental importance, since it allows determining the state in which it is located and allows better use of the available resources. In addition to allowing the recognition of sections of the road that require improvements and that must be prioritized. This research aims to subjectively analyze the surface condition of flexible pavement using the current service value (VSA) method, with the help of a visual scale built based on the proposal of Oliveira et al. (2013). The VSA analysis on Rua Capitão Manoel Miranda, located in the center of Barreiras, was carried out considering two different times of the day, with the aim of observing how different temperature and humidity conditions interfere with the comfort and smoothness of the trip offered to the users. The road was divided into four subsections of 600 meters each, totaling 2.4 kilometers. The surface of the road under study was classified as “good” after analyzing photographs using the visual scale and “fair” through the VSA evaluation. Once the final VSA (2.54) determined for the track was close to the accepted limit, it indicates the need to perform corrective maintenance and, subsequently, periodic preventive maintenance.El estudio de la calidad superficial del pavimento es de fundamental importancia, ya que permite determinar el estado en el que se encuentra el mismo y permite un mejor aprovechamiento de los recursos disponibles. A promoter DNA demethylation landscape of human hematopoietic differentiation

Global mechanisms defining the gene expression programs specific for hematopoiesis are still not fully understood. Here, we show that promoter DNA demethylation is associated with the activation of hematopoietic-specific genes. Using genome-wide promoter methylation arrays, we identified 694 hematopoietic-specific genes repressed by promoter DNA methylation in human embryonic stem cells and whose loss of methylation in hematopoietic can be associated with gene expression. The association between promoter methylation and gene expression was studied for many hematopoietic-specific genes including CD45, CD34, CD28, CD19, the T cell receptor (TCR), the MHC class II gene HLA-DR, perforin 1 and the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) and results indicated that DNA demethylation was not always sufficient for gene activation. Promoter demethylation occurred either early during embryonic development or later on during hematopoietic differentiation. Analysis of the genome-wide promoter methylation status of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) generated from somatic CD34+ HSPCs and differentiated derivatives from CD34+ HSPCs confirmed the role of DNA methylation in regulating the expression of genes of the hemato-immune system, and indicated that promoter methylation of these genes may be associated to stemness. Together, these data suggest that promoter DNA demethylation might play a role in the tissue/cell-specific genome-wide gene regulation within the hematopoietic compartment

    Get PDF
