    GENDER DIFFERENCES ON LOWER LIMB COORDINATION DURING ELITEPLAYERS JUMP

    The results from an experimental analysis of the jump in basketball female and male players are presented. Coordination of seventeen lower limb is analyzed in a high risk movement frequently performed by athletes during jump It is showed that on the sample studied several differences on relative phase are found entailing particularly transverse movement plane of knee. These results show that during some core moments of the jump, gender can influence the lower limb joint coordination. The comparison of relative phase shows a female propensity for moving in less synergy on jump reception. Such findings highlight the need for including on preparation program of athletes a prevention plan that is not necessarily identical on both genders

    Revisiting the Female Germline and Its Expanding Toolbox

    The Arabidopsis thaliana ovule arises as a female reproductive organ composed solely of somatic diploid cells. Among them, one cell will acquire a unique identity and initiate female germline development. In this review we explore the complex network that facilitates differentiation of this single cell, and consider how it becomes committed to a distinct developmental program. We highlight recent progress towards understanding the role of intercellular communication, cell competency, and cell-cycle regulation in the ovule primordium, and we discuss the possibility that distinct pathways restrict germline development at different stages. Importantly, these recent findings suggest a renaissance in plant ovule research, restoring the female germline as an attractive model to study cell communication and cell fate establishment in multicellular organs

    The nursing process presented as routine care actions: building its meaning in clinical nurses' perspective

    This qualitative study aimed to understand the meanings attributed to the nursing process by clinical nurses at a Mexican hospital. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation and document research. Symbolic Interactionism and Grounded Theory were the theoretical and methodological frameworks for data analysis, which permitted understanding the experience and meaning nurses attributed to the nursing process in their daily care practice, which was unveiled as routine care actions, performed differently from what they had learned in school.Este estudio de naturaleza cualitativa tuvo como objetivo comprender los significados atribuidos al proceso de enfermería por enfermeras de una unidad clínica de un hospital de México. La recolección de datos fue realizada por medio de entrevistas semiestructuradas, complementada con la observación participante y la consulta documental. Los datos fueron analizados bajo el marco teórico y metodológico del Interaccionismo Simbólico y la Teoría Fundamentada en los Datos, que posibilitaron la comprensión de la experiencia y significado atribuido por las enfermeras, al proceso de enfermería en su práctica cotidiana asistencial, que se desvela como acciones de cuidado rutinario, aplicados de forma diferente a lo enseñado y aprendido en la escuela.Este estudo, de natureza qualitativa, teve como objetivo compreender os significados atribuídos ao processo de enfermagem por enfermeiras da unidade clínica em um hospital do México. A coleta dos dados foi realizada por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas, complementada por observação participante e consulta documental. Os dados foram analisados tendo como referenciais teóricos e metodológicos o Interacionismo Simbólico e a Teoria Fundamentada nos Dados, possibilitando a compreensão da vivência e o significado atribuído pelas enfermeiras ao processo de enfermagem, na prática cotidiana assistencial, que se desvela como ações de cuidado rotineiro, aplicados de forma diferente daquilo que é ensinado e aprendido na escola

    Functional characterization of 8-oxoguanine DNA glycosylase of Trypanosoma cruzi

    The oxidative lesion 8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG) is removed during base excision repair by the 8-oxoguanine DNA glycosylase 1 (Ogg1). This lesion can erroneously pair with adenine, and the excision of this damaged base by Ogg1 enables the insertion of a guanine and prevents DNA mutation. In this report, we identified and characterized Ogg1 from the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi (TcOgg1), the causative agent of Chagas disease. Like most living organisms, T. cruzi is susceptible to oxidative stress, hence DNA repair is essential for its survival and improvement of infection. We verified that the TcOGG1 gene encodes an 8-oxoG DNA glycosylase by complementing an Ogg1-defective Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain. Heterologous expression of TcOGG1 reestablished the mutation frequency of the yeast mutant ogg1-/- (CD138) to wild type levels. We also demonstrate that the overexpression of TcOGG1 increases T. cruzi sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Analysis of DNA lesions using quantitative PCR suggests that the increased susceptibility to H2O2 of TcOGG1-overexpressor could be a consequence of uncoupled BER in abasic sites and/or strand breaks generated after TcOgg1 removes 8-oxoG, which are not rapidly repaired by the subsequent BER enzymes. This hypothesis is supported by the observation that TcOGG1-overexpressors have reduced levels of 8-oxoG both in the nucleus and in the parasite mitochondrion. The localization of TcOgg1 was examined in parasite transfected with a TcOgg1-GFP fusion, which confirmed that this enzyme is in both organelles. Taken together, our data indicate that T. cruzi has a functional Ogg1 ortholog that participates in nuclear and mitochondrial BER. © 2012 Furtado et al

    Trace level analysis of VOCs and semi-VOCs in aqueous solution using a direct insertion membrane probe and trap and release membrane introduction mass spectrometry

    A new design for a trap and release membrane introduction mass spectrometry (T&R-MIMS) system using a removable direct insertion membrane probe (DIMP) for combined trace level analysis (low or sub ppb range) of volatile (VOC) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) is reported. The system differs from the original T&R-MIMS system (M. Leth and F. R. Lauritsen, Rapid Commun. Mass Spectrom., 1995, 9, 591) as it uses a removable DIMP probe to place a capillary membrane loop inside the ion source block exactly between two parallel filaments. The more versatile DIMP-T&R-MIMS system can be operated, during the trapping step of T&R-MIMS analysis, in the standard MIMS mode for VOC detection; during the T&R-MIMS thermal desorption step needed for SVOC analysis, the system permits faster and more uniform heating of the membrane, thus SVOC sensitivity is improved and memory effects are minimized.1251212

    O fenômeno educativo em nível superior e os muitos caminhos de sua realização constitui o pano de fundo no qual transitam estudantes africanos de nível superior e, dentro e fora de seus países originários, particularmente, no Brasil e em Portugal. São sujeitos que buscam construir trajetórias estudantis e profissionais, múltiplas e diversas, porém enfrentam desafios que envolvem o processo migratório, a formação e a profissionalização. O contexto que os desafia na construção de um lugar próprio como intelectual e negro em sociedades marcadamente racistas como o caso do Brasil e de Portugal expõe a natureza das instituições de ensino. Expõe ainda, a existência do racismo científico e revela o campo de conflito e tensões que envolvem o sujeito negro em busca de qualificação. Nesse sentido, entra em linha de conta questões relativas ao desenvolvimento humano, social e econômico, bem como a internacionalização que, expressa a dinamicidade dos cinco países africanos – Angola, Moçambique, Cabo Verde, Guiné Bissau, São Tomé e Príncipe – tomados enquanto realidades em transição. Contudo, a internacionalização é também proposta brasileira para seu sistema de ensino, que tanto recebe aos africanos e outros em suas IES, como gera políticas de intercâmbio de alunos brasileiros com outros países. Não é diferente com Portugal. Assim, compreender o que há de mais geral e também mais particular na realidade dos países africanos e no caso brasileiro é a proposta do presente artigo

    Logarithmic diffusion and porous media equations: a unified description

    In this work we present the logarithmic diffusion equation as a limit case when the index that characterizes a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation, in its diffusive term, goes to zero. A linear drift and a source term are considered in this equation. Its solution has a lorentzian form, consequently this equation characterizes a super diffusion like a L\'evy kind. In addition is obtained an equation that unifies the porous media and the logarithmic diffusion equations, including a generalized diffusion equation in fractal dimension. This unification is performed in the nonextensive thermostatistics context and increases the possibilities about the description of anomalous diffusive processes.Comment: 5 pages. To appear in Phys.     Longitudinal association between binge eating and metabolic syndrome in adults: findings from the ELSA-Brasil cohort.

    Objective: Individuals with bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder have greater cardiovascular morbidity than the general population. Longitudinal research on the association between binge eating and metabolic syndrome is limited. We tested the longitudinal association between binge eating and metabolic syndrome and its components in a large population sample of Brazilian adults. Methods: We used data from Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil, N = 15,105). To test for the association between binge eating at baseline (2008–2010) and metabolic syndrome at follow-up (2012–2014), we used univariable and multivariable logistic regression models progressively adjusting for potential socio-demographic confounders, number of metabolic syndrome components, and body mass index (BMI) at baseline. Results: In total, 13,388 participants (54.8% female; 52.2% white) had complete data on all variables of interest. Binge eating was associated with increased odds of metabolic syndrome at follow-up (odds ratio (OR):1.66, 95% confidence intervals (CI): 1.44, 1.75). However, the size of this association was attenuated after including number of metabolic syndrome components at baseline (OR:1.19, 95% CI: 1.05, 1.35) and was no longer present after adjusting for baseline BMI (OR:1.09, 95% CI: 0.96, 1.25). Binge eating was also associated with higher odds of hypertension (OR:1.14, 95% CI: 0.99, 1.37) and hypertriglyceridemia (OR:1.21, 95% CI: 1.06, 1.37) at the follow-up assessment after adjustment for all confounders. Conclusions: Individuals who binge eat are at increased risk of metabolic syndrome via increased BMI, and of hypertriglyceridemia and hypertension independently of BMI. If these are causal associations, effective interventions for binge eating could also have beneficial effects on metabolic health outcomes

    Shear-strain step response in linear regime of dilute suspensions of naturally bent carbon nanotubes

    Impressive enhancements of the storage modulus have been documented when low volume fractions of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are added to a Newtonian solvent for obtaining dilute suspensions. The intrinsic bending dynamics of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been proposed to explain such elasticity. CNTs contain topological defects inducing naturally bent structures in absence of external forces and, hence, a semiflexible filament with a bent configuration at minimal internal-bending-energy is used for mimicking the structure of SWNTs in suspension. Previous continuous model is discretized as a non-freely jointed bead-rod chain with a naturally bent configuration for simulating the rheological behaviour after a shear-strain step in linear regime of SWNT dilute suspension by using a Brownian dynamics (BD) approach. In general, bead-rod chains exhibit an instantaneous relaxation after a high shear-strain step. Bending rigidity and number of constitutive rods are found to be determinant parameters in the internal-energy relaxation behaviour of non-freely jointed bead-rod chains in dilute solution. Proper comparisons between the BD simulation results and the experimental data for treated SWNT dilute suspensions confirm the consistency of the physical model mimicking the structure of a SWNT
