    Stand up for recalcitrance!

    This is an urgent plea for action. Action for progressive change: in services and societies that frame them. Concerted action to protest and resist hurtful orthodoxies and, more importantly, communicative action to conceive alternative, better futures and seek the change that will get us there. Some of this action is already underway. Some of it barely escapes the bounds of imagination. Too little of it involves mental health nurses, and, arguably, this must be remedied. Hence this plea. I wish to make a case for a new professional identity that embraces resistance and action for change, seeking democratised solutions for service level and societal deficiencies. Recalcitrant professionalism can seek constructive alliances with recalcitrant consumers, service users and survivors to resist and transform the forces of oppression that assail us all

    A Cambridge University study of more than 58,000 users of the popular social medium Facebook examined the extent to which the Facebook "Likes" button predicted behaviors and attributes of a diverse nature (IQ, sexual identity, political and popular-culture preferences, religious affiliation, and the like). Despite revealing several intriguing and statistically significant relationships, the research sheds scant light on the nature of the subjectivity at play. In a Q-methodological study of a sample of subjectively communicated responses to the Cambridge research, three versions of the subjective interface between the users of Facebook and the social medium are reported.Ā  Implications for studying the social-psychological aspects of social media from the methodological principle of self-reflection are discussed

    Climatic, edaphic, and biotic controls over storage and turnover of carbon in soils

    Soil carbon, a major component of the global carbon inventory, has significant potential for change with changing climate and human land use. We applied the Century ecosystem model to a series of forest and grassland sites distributed globally to examine large-scale controls over soil carbon. Key site-specific parameters influencing soil carbon dynamics are soil texture and foliar lignin content; accordingly, we perturbed these variables at each site to establish a range of carbon concentrations and turnover times. We examined the simulated soil carbon stores, turnover times, and C:N ratios for correlations with patterns of independent variables. Results showed that soil carbon is related linearly to soil texture, increasing as clay content increases, that soil carbon stores and turnover time are related to mean annual temperature by negative exponential functions, and that heterotrophic respiration originates from recent detritus (āˆ¼50%), microbial turnover (āˆ¼30%), and soil organic matter (āˆ¼20%) with modest variations between forest and grassland ecosystems. The effect of changing temperature on soil organic carbon (SOC) estimated by Century is dSOC/dT= 183eāˆ’0.034T. Global extrapolation of this relationship leads to an estimated sensitivity of soil C storage to a temperature of āˆ’11.1 PgĀ° Cāˆ’1, excluding extreme arid and organic soils. In Century, net primary production (NPP) and soil carbon are closely coupled through the N cycle, so that as temperatures increase, accelerated N release first results in fertilization responses, increasing C inputs. The Century-predicted effect of temperature on carbon storage is modified by as much as 100% by the N cycle feedback. Century-estimated soil C sensitivity (āˆ’11.1 PgĀ° Cāˆ’1) is similar to losses predicted with a simple data-based calculation (āˆ’14.1 PgĀ° Cāˆ’1). Inclusion of the N cycle is important for even first-order predictions of terrestrial carbon balance. If the NPP-SOC feedback is disrupted by land use or other disturbances, then SOC sensitivity can greatly exceed that estimated in our simulations. Century results further suggest that if climate change results in drying of organic soils (peats), soil carbon loss rates can be high

    Using the volume coupling version of the cloudy bag model, the quark-meson coupling model is extended to study the role of pion field and the properties of nuclear matter. The extended model includes the effect of gluon exchange as well as the pion-cloud effect, and provides a good description of the nuclear matter properties.     Inhibition of fibronectin matrix assembly by the heparin-binding domain of vitronectin

    The deposition of fibronectin into the extracellular matrix is an integrin-dependent, multistep process that is tightly regulated in order to ensure controlled matrix deposition. Reduced fibronectin deposition has been associated with altered embryonic development, tumor cell invasion, and abnormal wound repair. In one of the initial steps of fibronectin matrix assembly, the amino-terminal region of fibronectin binds to cell surface receptors, termed matrix assembly sites. The present study was undertaken to investigate the role of extracellular signals in the regulation of fibronectin deposition. Our data indicate that the interaction of cells with the extracellular glycoprotein, vitronectin, specifically inhibits matrix assembly site expression and fibronectin deposition. The region of vitronectin responsible for the inhibition of fibronectin deposition was localized to the heparin-binding domain. Vitronectin\u27s heparin-binding domain inhibited both Ī²1 and non-Ī²1 integrin-dependent matrix assembly site expression and could be overcome by treatment of cells with lysophosphatidic acid, an agent that promotes actin polymerization. The interaction of cells with the heparin-binding domain of vitronectin resulted in changes in actin microfilament organization and the subcellular distribution of the actin- associated proteins Ī±-actinin and talin. These data suggest a mechanism whereby the heparin-binding domain of vitronectin regulates the deposition of fibronectin into the extracellular matrix through alterations in the organization of the actin cytoskeleton

    Care planning: a neoliberal three card trick

    Introduction The three card game, sometimes called find the queen, is a classic confidence trick, typically taking place on an impromptu table top, set up on pavement or street corner. The tricksters usually operate in teams, pulling in punters and ā€˜losingā€™ games with their fellows to persuade prospective speculators the game is winnable. For our titular purposes the three card trick serves as a metaphor for broader deceits. We are concerned with how well-meaning mental health nurses can enter into a set of apparently rational practices, insisted upon by policy and protocol, seemingly motivated by ideals of care and protection from harm, yet functioning to destroy the very essence of what it might mean to be a caring, progressive practitioner by contributing to a mutuality of alienation that, at the relational level, is the opposite of what services intend to achieve. This may prove to be the case because an external confidence trickster (neoliberalism) is actually in charge, and the real function of the game serves other ends. The whole point of the game is that genuine players can never win, and for the trickster to triumph it is necessary that these punters are willing, gullible and in most circumstances accept losses without too much fuss. When the losers do not go quietly this is referred to in the argot of the con as ā€˜squawkingā€™, and personnel are deployed on the periphery to ensure any squawk is minimised. Various strategies can be used to ā€˜cool out the markā€™, and are analogous to the means by which people are assisted to adjust to lifeā€™s disappointments in other contexts, including encounters with priests or sundry psy-professionals (Goffman 1952; McKeown et al. 2013). This commentary paper seeks to provoke nursing out of its state of gullibility and self-deception even if this involves painful reflection on the losses inherent in our collective game of mental health care. If we are to defend the importance of mental health nursing we must think more critically about our complicity within oppressive systems of control and do something about it. There is a lengthy critical tradition to draw on. We urge mental health nurses to squawk, asserting a more recalcitrant and rebellious standpoint, preferably in alliance with service users, refusers and survivors. Acknowledging the constraints upon nursingā€™s agency, deficits of power, and structural disadvantage need not default to impotence and inaction: collective resistance is always possible, however difficult the circumstances

    Evidence for different thermal ecotypes in range centre and trailing edge kelp populations

    Determining and predicting speciesā€™ responses to climate change is a fundamental goal of contemporary ecology. When interpreting responses to warming species are often treated as a single physiological unit with a single species-wide thermal niche. This assumes that trailing edge populations are most vulnerable to warming, as it is here where a speciesā€™ thermal niche will be exceeded first. Local adaptation can, however, result in narrower thermal tolerance limits for local populations, so that similar relative increases in temperature can exceed local niches throughout a species range. We used a combination of common garden temperature heat-shock experiments (8ā€“32 Ā°C) and population genetics (microsatellites) to identify thermal ecotypes of northeast Atlantic range centre and trailing edge populations of the habitat-forming kelp, Laminaria digitata. Using upregulation of hsp70 as an indicator of thermal stress, we found that trailing edge populations were better equipped to tolerate acute temperature shocks. This pattern was consistent across seasons, indicating that between-population variability is fixed. High genetic structuring was also observed, with range centre and trailing edge populations representing highly distinct clusters with little gene flow between regions. Taken together, this suggests the presence of distinct thermal ecotypes for L. digitata, which may mean responses to future warming are more complex than linear range contractions.     Laser Chemosensor with Rapid Responsivity and Inherent Memory Based on a Polymer of Intrinsic Microporosity

    This work explores the use of a polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1) as the active layer within a laser sensor to detect nitroaromatic-based explosive vapors. We show successful detection of dinitrobenzene (DNB) by monitoring the real-time photoluminescence. We also show that PIM-1 has an inherent memory, so that it accumulates the analyte during exposure. In addition, the optical gain and refractive index of the polymer were studied by amplified spontaneous emission and variable-angle ellipsometry, respectively. A second-order distributed feedback PIM-1 laser sensor was fabricated and found to show an increase in laser threshold of 2.5 times and a reduction of the laser slope efficiency by 4.4 times after a 5-min exposure to the DNB vapor. For pumping at 2 times threshold, the lasing action was stopped within 30 s indicating that PIM-1 has a very fast responsivity and as such has a potential sensing ability for ultra-low-concentration explosives
