    The Open Resource Scholarly Network: a new era for historians, archivists and technologists

    Since 1985 the staff of the Australian Science and Technology Heritage Centre (Austehc) have been collecting and disseminating information about the history of Australian science, technology and medicine including data about archival resources on the presumption that scholarly practice, including the creation of new knowledge, was based on free access to, and the citability of, existing knowledge. The advent of electronic network technologies has enable us to realise our goals in ways that were not even dreams in the earlier environment. However, not all players in the scholarly information and publishing realms have responded in the same way. Despite these new technologies, which should be making resources much more readily accessible, many valuable resources are locked up (discoverable perhaps but uncitable) behind closed database walls or are available only on a user pays basis. In many cases these resources were previously available freely through research libraries. Austehc has spent the last few years developing database driven Web publishing tools to support an open resource scholarly electronic network. These tools are being offered to the community at no cost, under the open source philosophy, if they are used for public good and education purposes.     Visualising complex networks within humanities data for discovery and analysis

    This paper describes the preliminary work leading to a project to build a web services visualisation tool that addresses the multi‐dimensional metadata used to describe cultural datasets, especially those created by researchers to meet specific research ends. The project will utilise the Knalij service developed by Steven Melnikoff (Information Physics, The University of Melbourne) together with datasets curated using the eScholarship Research Centre’s Online Heritage Resource Manager (OHRM) system. In the first instance it is proposed that the Encyclopedia of Australian Science and the Australian Women’s Register datasets be used to operationalise the tool. Using offline visualisation tools, the study of both embedded and implied complex network structures within standards‐based Humanities datasets has revealed significant potential for analysis, navigation, discovery, and the development of new research methods. In October 2011 Knalij was awarded the USA challenge.gov prize for the most innovative uses of National Library of Medicine data. Knalij offers an interactive web service that can visualise the whole of PubMed in real time. This is a landmark achievement that opens up web services, real‐time visualisation capability for complex Humanities datasets with both synchronic and diachronic variables. As noted in the Knalij press release in October: ‘We visualized the entirety of cancer research since 1800 and displayed the progression through the decades. Our maps are searchable, interactive, and ready for researchers to discover trends, patterns, and connections. This is the first time that anyone has visually displayed the entire scope of cancer research in one searchable application. We are very excited to present this to the world'.     A submission in response to the Australian Government\u27s Consultation Paper on the Establishment of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. Introduction We are a team of academics and researchers, from the disciplines of historical studies, social work and archival science, who have substantive years of experience working on projects exploring the legacy of Australia\u27s institutional \u27care\u27 of children. Our work in this space, particularly since the release of the Forgotten Australians report in 2004, has involved ongoing engagement with a broad range of stakeholders, including care leavers, support and advocacy groups, past and current providers of out-of-home care, state and federal government departments, and cultural institutions. We welcome the opportunity to make a submission in response to the Australian Government\u27s Consultation Paper on the Establishment of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. Our submission discusses the vital importance that records will play in this Royal Commission, with particular reference to records in the custody of past providers in religious, charitable and government sectors. We submit that records are a key issue for this Royal Commission

    Archiving the Scientific Legacy of Dr. Alec Costin

    Alec Costin is one of Australia’s foremost ecologists, internationally respected for his pioneering work into the soils, hydrology and vegetation of the Australian alpine regions. Advisor to governments and their agencies, he was instrumental in the conservation of the Australian Alps. Alec’s field notes, data sheets and Kodachrome slides, a record of the Alps in the 1950s and 60s, are important historically and provide an important resource to interpret change in vegetation and landscapes in the Australian Alps. The University of Melbourne, funded by the Australian Alps National Parks, will catalogue and archive these materials, so future generations of scientists and historians can easily gain access to them

    Mechanical systems in the quantum regime

    Mechanical systems are ideal candidates for studying quantumbehavior of macroscopic objects. To this end, a mechanical resonator has to be cooled to its ground state and its position has to be measured with great accuracy. Currently, various routes to reach these goals are being explored. In this review, we discuss different techniques for sensitive position detection and we give an overview of the cooling techniques that are being employed. The latter include sideband cooling and active feedback cooling. The basic concepts that are important when measuring on mechanical systems with high accuracy and/or at very low temperatures, such as thermal and quantum noise, linear response theory, and backaction, are explained. From this, the quantum limit on linear position detection is obtained and the sensitivities that have been achieved in recent opto and nanoelectromechanical experiments are compared to this limit. The mechanical resonators that are used in the experiments range from meter-sized gravitational wave detectors to nanomechanical systems that can only be read out using mesoscopic devices such as single-electron transistors or superconducting quantum interference devices. A special class of nanomechanical systems are bottom-up fabricated carbon-based devices, which have very high frequencies and yet a large zero-point motion, making them ideal for reaching the quantum regime. The mechanics of some of the different mechanical systems at the nanoscale is studied. We conclude this review with an outlook of how state-of-the-art mechanical resonators can be improved to study quantum {\it mechanics}.Comment: To appear in Phys. Re

    This document is a Finding Aid to the Papers of the Department of Metallurgy, at the University of Melbourne. A chair of metallurgy was first established at the University of Melbourne in 1924 though the subject had been taught since 1877. In recent times the Department has gone through a number of changes and no longer exists in its own right. The few surviving papers, apart from the University's official Central Registry series, include the minutes of the Metallurgical Society 1930 - 1946, roll books for metallurgy classes 1894 - 1940, photographs of mining at Mt. Morgan 1884 - 1914 and a few files of correspondence. A more complete record of the Department's activities could have provided much evidence of the developing relationships between one of Australia's most important industries and its scientific base
