    The photochemical decomposition of α-diazoketone 1 in toluene gives rise to the formation of the well known keto carbene-oxirene equilibrium from which not only the product of the Wolff rearrangem ent can be derived but also the com pounds 5, 6 and 7 which are formed directly via the corresponding keto carbenes A and B respectively. Formation of the azulene 6 is unexpected in this context, it's structure could be revealed by X-ray analysis. The results may be regarded as an additional contribution to the mechanism of the Wolff rearrangement, but what is more, they could serve as a model for the feasibility of mechanistic oxirene chemistry in a more preparative aspect

    Chern-Simons Theory as the Large Mass Limit of Topologically Massive Yang-Mills Theory

    We study quantum Chern-Simons theory as the large mass limit of the limit D3D\to 3 of dimensionally regularized topologically massive Yang-Mills theory. This approach can also be interpreted as a BRS-invariant hybrid regularization of Chern-Simons theory, consisting of a higher-covariant derivative Yang-Mills term plus dimensional regularization. Working in the Landau gauge, we compute radiative corrections up to second order in perturbation theory and show that there is no two-loop correction to the one-loop shift kk+cV,kk\rightarrow k+ c_{\scriptscriptstyle V},\,\,k being the bare Chern-Simons parameter.     Infection of Human Coronary Artery Endothelial Cells by Group B Streptococcus Contributes to Dysregulation of Apoptosis, Hemostasis, and Innate Immune Responses

    Early onset sepsis due to group B streptococcus leads to neonatal morbidity, increased mortality, and long-term neurological deficencies. Interaction between septicemic GBS and confluent monolayers of human coronary artery endothelial cells (HCAECs) was analyzed by genome wide expression profiling. In total, 124 genes were differentially expressed (89 upregulated, 35 downregulated) based on a more than 3-fold difference to control HCAEC. Regulated genes are involved in apoptosis, hemostasis, oxidative stress response, infection, and inflammation. Regulation of selected genes and proteins identified in the gene array analysis was confirmed by Real-time RT-PCR assay (granulocyte chemotactic protein 2), ELISA (urokinase, cyclooxygenase 2, granulocyte chemotactic protein 1), and western blotting (Heme oxygenase1, BCL2 interacting protein) at various time points between 4 and 24 hours. These results indicate that GBS infection might influence signalling pathways leading to impaired function of the innate immune system and hemorrhagic and inflammatory complications during GBS sepsis

    Physically meaningful and not so meaningful symmetries in Chern-Simons theory

    We explicitly show that the Landau gauge supersymmetry of Chern-Simons theory does not have any physical significance. In fact, the difference between an effective action both BRS invariant and Landau supersymmetric and an effective action only BRS invariant is a finite field redefinition. Having established this, we use a BRS invariant regulator that defines CS theory as the large mass limit of topologically massive Yang-Mills theory to discuss the shift k \to k+\cv of the bare Chern-Simons parameter kk in conncection with the Landau supersymmetry. Finally, to convince ourselves that the shift above is not an accident of our regularization method, we comment on the fact that all BRS invariant regulators used as yet yield the same value for the shift.Comment: phyzzx, 21 pages, 2 figures in one PS fil

    Is anyone looking at me? Direct gaze detection in children with and without autism

    Atypical processing of eye contact is one of the significant characteristics of individuals with autism, but the mechanism underlying atypical direct gaze processing is still unclear. This study used a visual search paradigm to examine whether the facial context would affect direct gaze detection in children with autism. Participants were asked to detect target gazes presented among distracters with different gaze directions. The target gazes were either direct gaze or averted gaze, which were either presented alone (Experiment 1) or within facial context (Experiment 2). As with the typically developing children, the children with autism, were faster and more efficient to detect direct gaze than averted gaze, whether or not the eyes were presented alone or within faces. In addition, face inversion distorted efficient direct gaze detection in typically developing children, but not in children with autism. These results suggest that children with autism use featural information to detect direct gaze, whereas typically developing children use configural information to detect direct gaze

    Correlations in two-component log-gas systems

    A systematic study of the properties of particle and charge correlation functions in the two-dimensional Coulomb gas confined to a one-dimensional domain is undertaken. Two versions of this system are considered: one in which the positive and negative charges are constrained to alternate in sign along the line, and the other where there is no charge ordering constraint. Both systems undergo a zero-density Kosterlitz-Thouless type transition as the dimensionless coupling Γ:=q2/kT\Gamma := q^2 / kT is varied through Γ=2\Gamma = 2. In the charge ordered system we use a perturbation technique to establish an O(1/r4)O(1/r^4) decay of the two-body correlations in the high temperature limit. For Γ2+\Gamma \rightarrow 2^+, the low-fugacity expansion of the asymptotic charge-charge correlation can be resummed to all orders in the fugacity.     Inconsistency of Naive Dimensional Regularizations and Quantum Correction to Non-Abelian Chern-Simons-Matter Theory Revisited

    We find the inconsistency of dimensional reduction and naive dimensional regularization in their applications to Chern-Simons type gauge theories. Further we adopt a consistent dimensional regularization to investigate the quantum correction to non-Abelian Chern-Simons term coupled with fermionic matter.     An evaluation of the distribution properties, factor structure, and item response profile of an assessment of emotion recognition

    Many people with developmental disabilities, such as autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability have emotion recognition (ER) difficulties compared with typically developing (TD) peers. Accurate assessment of the extent and nature of differences in ER requires an understanding of the response profiles to ER assessment stimuli. We analysed data from 504 TD individuals in response to an ER assessment in respect of distribution properties, factor structure, and item response profile. Eighteen emotion items discriminated better at lower levels of ER ability in TD participants. Neutral expressions were the hardest to interpret; surprise, anger, happy, and bored were easiest. The amount of contextual information in combination with the emotion being depicted also appeared to influence level of difficulty. Similar psychometric research is needed with people with developmental disabilities
