Raman phonons as a probe of disorder, fluctuations and local structure in doped and undoped orthorhombic and rhombohedral manganites
We present a rationalization of the Raman spectra of orthorhombic and
rhombohedral, stoichiometric and doped, manganese perovskites. In particular we
study RMnO3 (R= La, Pr, Nd, Tb, Ho, Er, Y and Ca) and the different phases of
Ca or Sr doped RMnO3 compounds as well as cation deficient RMnO3. The spectra
of manganites can be understood as combinations of two kinds of spectra
corresponding to two structural configurations of MnO6 octahedra and
independently of the average structure obtained by diffraction techniques. The
main peaks of compounds with regular MnO6 octahedra, as CaMnO3, highly Ca doped
LaMnO3 or the metallic phases of Ca or Sr doped LaMnO3, are bending and tilt
MnO6 octahedra modes which correlate to R-O(1) bonds and Mn-O-Mn angles
respectively. In low and optimally doped manganites, the intensity and width of
the broad bands are related to the amplitude of the dynamic fluctuations
produced by polaron hopping in the paramagnetic insulating regime. The
activation energy, which is proportional to the polaron binding energy, is the
measure of this amplitude. This study permits to detect and confirm the
coexistence, in several compounds, of a paramagnetic matrix with lattice
polaron together with regions without dynamic or static octahedron distortions,
identical to the ferromagnetic metallic phase. We show that Raman spectroscopy
is an excellent tool to obtain information on the local structure of the
different micro or macro-phases present simultaneously in many manganites.Comment: Submitted to PR
Generation, establishment and characterization of a pluripotent stem cell line (CVTTHi001-A) from primary fibroblasts isolated from a patient with activated PI3 kinase delta syndrome (APDS2)
APDS2 is caused by mutations in PIK3R1 gene resulting in constitutive PI3KÎŽ activation. PI3KÎŽ is predominantly expressed in leukocytes and plays critical roles in regulating immune responses. Here we first derived fibroblast primary cells from a skin biopsy of a patient carrying a heterozygous single T deletion in intron 11 of the PIK3R1 gene. We next present the derivation of an induced pluripotent stem cell (iPS) line using a non-integrative reprogramming technology. Pluripotent-related hallmarks are further shown, including: iPSCs self-renewal and expression of pluripotent and differentiation markers after in vitro differentiation towards embryonic germ layers, assessed by RT-PCR and immunofluorescence
Endothelial dysfunction is an early indicator of sepsis and neutrophil degranulation of septic shock in surgical patients
ProducciĂłn CientĂficaBackground: Stratification of the severity of infection is currently based on the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score, which is difficult to calculate outside the ICU. Biomarkers could help to stratify the severity of infection in surgical patients. Methods: Levels of ten biomarkers indicating endothelial dysfunction, 22 indicating emergency granulopoiesis, and six denoting neutrophil degranulation were compared in three groups of patients in the first 12 h after diagnosis at three Spanish hospitals. Results: There were 100 patients with infection, 95 with sepsis and 57 with septic shock. Seven biomarkers indicating endothelial dysfunction (mid-regional proadrenomedullin (MR-ProADM), syndecan 1, thrombomodulin, angiopoietin 2, endothelial cell-specific molecule 1, vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 and E-selectin) had stronger associations with sepsis than infection alone. MR-ProADM had the highest odds ratio (OR) in multivariable analysis (OR 11·53, 95 per cent c.i. 4·15 to 32·08; P = 0·006) and the best area under the curve (AUC) for detecting sepsis (0·86, 95 per cent c.i. 0·80 to 0·91; P < 0·001). In a comparison of sepsis with septic shock, two biomarkers of neutrophil degranulation, proteinase 3 (OR 8·09, 1·34 to 48·91; P = 0·028) and lipocalin 2 (OR 6·62, 2·47 to 17·77; P = 0·002), had the strongest association with septic shock, but lipocalin 2 exhibited the highest AUC (0·81, 0·73 to 0·90; P < 0·001). Conclusion: MR-ProADM and lipocalin 2 could be alternatives to the SOFA score in the detection of sepsis and septic shock respectively in surgical patients with infection.Instituto de Salud Carlos III (grants PI15/01959, PI15/01451 and PI16/01156
Differential branching fraction and angular analysis of the decay B0âKâ0ÎŒ+ÎŒâ
The angular distribution and differential branching fraction of the decay B 0â K â0 ÎŒ + ÎŒ â are studied using a data sample, collected by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at sâ=7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fbâ1. Several angular observables are measured in bins of the dimuon invariant mass squared, q 2. A first measurement of the zero-crossing point of the forward-backward asymmetry of the dimuon system is also presented. The zero-crossing point is measured to be q20=4.9±0.9GeV2/c4 , where the uncertainty is the sum of statistical and systematic uncertainties. The results are consistent with the Standard Model predictions

Observation of the decay
The decay is observed for the first
time, using proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector
corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb. A signal yield of
decays is reported with a significance of 6.2 standard deviations.
The ratio of the branching fraction of \B_c \rightarrow J/\psi K^+ K^- \pi^+

Observation of associated production of a boson with a meson in the~forward region
A search for associated production of a boson with an open charm meson is
presented using a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of
of proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy
of 7\,TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment. %% Seven candidate events for
associated production of a boson with a meson and four candidate
events for a boson with a meson are observed with a combined
significance of 5.1standard deviations. The production cross-sections in the
forward region are measured to be where the first uncertainty is statistical and the
second systematic.Comment: 18 pages, 2 figure
Observation of the decay B+câBÂșsÏ+
The result of a search for the decay B+câBÂșsÏ+ is presented, using the BÂșsâDs-Ï+ and BÂșsâJ/ÏÏ channels. The analysis is based on a data sample of pp collisions collected with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1ââfb-1 taken at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and 2ââfb-1 taken at 8 TeV. The decay B+câBÂșsÏ+ is observed with significance in excess of 5 standard deviations independently in both decay channels. The measured product of the ratio of cross sections and branching fraction is [Ï(Bc+)/Ï(BÂșs)]ĂB(Bc+âBÂșsÏ+)=[2.37±0.31â(stat)±0.11â(syst)-0.13+0.17(ÏBc+)]Ă10-3, in the pseudorapidity range 2<η(B)<5, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainty on the Bc+ lifetime. This is the first observation of a B meson decaying to another B meson via the weak interaction
