A New Conformal Cooling System for Plastic Collimators Based on the Use of Complex Geometries and Optimization of Temperature Profiles

The paper presents a new design of conformal cooling channels, for application in collimator-type optical plastic parts. The conformal channels that are presented exceed the thermal and dynamic performance of traditional and standard conformal channels, since they implement new sections of complex topology, capable of meeting the high geometric and functional specifications of the optical part, as well as the technological requirements of the additive manufacturing of the mold cavities. In order to evaluate the improvement and efficiency of the thermal performance of the solution presented, a transient numerical analysis of the cooling phase has been carried out, comparing the traditional cooling with the new geometry that is proposed. The evolution of the temperature profile versus the thickness of the part in the collimating core with greater thickness and temperature, has been evaluated in a transient mode. The analysis of the thermal profiles, the calculation of the integral mean ejection temperature at each time of the transient analysis, and the use of the Fourier formula, show great improvement in the cycle time in comparison with the traditional cooling. The application of the new conformal design reduces the manufacturing cycle time of the collimator part by 10 s, with this value being 13% of the total manufacturing cycle of the plastic part. As a further improvement, the use of the new cooling system reduces the amount of thickness in the collimator core, which is above the ejection temperature of the plastic material. The improvement in the thermal performance of the design of the parametric cooling channels that are presented not only has a significant reduction in the cycle time, but also improves the uniformity in the temperature map of the collimating part surface, the displacement field, and the stresses that are associated with the temperature gradient on the surface of the optical part. This research work was supported by the University of Jaen through the Plan de Apoyo a la Investigación 2021-2022-ACCION1a POAI 2021-2022: TIC-159

Subduction and syn-collisional exhumation of a Paleozoic continental margin: an integrated study based on structures and P-T paths of the Basal Units in the Ordenes Complex (Galicia, Spain)

    Get PDF
According to their metamorphic evolution, the Basal Units of the Galician Allochthonous Complexes are thought to represent a part of the margin of the Paleozoic Gondwana, subducted at the onset of the Variscan Orogeny. Variations in the P-T conditions of the first HP metamorphic event along the units suggest an important westward component for the direction of sucduction. Subsequent underthrusting of more continental material blocked the subduction and triggered the ascent and exhumation of the Basal Units whereas the convergence continued. Compressional and extensional structures were synchronous or alternated in time and, together, induced the thinning and tapering of the orogenic wedge. The unroofing took place locally under an inverted temperature gradient, caused by a detachment which carried a part of the hot mantle wedge, above the subduction zone, over the subducted units

Variscan exhumation of a subducted Paleozoic continental margin: The basal units of the Ordenes Complex, Galicia, NW Spain

    Get PDF
A structural and metamorphic study was carried out in the basal units of the Ordenes Complex in Spain, thought to represent a subducted part of the Paleozoic margin of Gondwana. According to their metamorphic evolution, this part of the margin was subducted at the onset of the Variscan Orogeny, becoming part of an accretionary complex developed below a colliding element built previously. Variations in the PT conditions of the first high-pressure metamorphic event along the units indicate a polarity of the subduction to the west. Subsequent underthrusting of more continental material blocked the subduction and triggered the ascent and exhumation of the basal units, whereas the convergence continued. Recumbent folds and thrusts de ve loped along with successive normal detachments. Compressional and extensional structures were synchronous or alternated in time and together induced the thinning and tapering of the orogenic wedge and its lateral spreading. The unroofing took place locally under an inverted temperature gradient caused by a detachment which carried a part of the hot mantle wedge above the subduction zone over the subducted units

New paleoseismic data for the Alhama de Murcia Fault in the La Salud alluvial fan (Lorca-Totana segment) Betic Cordillera

This fault is located in the southeast of Spain and produces the 2011 Lorca earthquake (Mw 5.2), that was the most catastrophic earthquake occurred in Spain in the last 50 years. In this paper we present the analysis of two paleoseismic trenches excavated in La Salud alluvial fan, with the aim to obtain new recurrence data for the eastern section of the Lorca- Totana segment of the fault. The structure that we observed in the trenches is recognizable in the electric tomography and GPR profiles undertaken in the study area. Both the paleoseismic trenches and the geophysics analysis are consistent with the existence of a fault plane dipping 30º to the south. This fault plane deforms the younger fluvial fan deposits. The paleoseismic study indicates the existence of between 3 and 6 surface rupture events in the last 31 ka for this strand of the fault.Depto. de Geodinámica, Estratigrafía y PaleontologíaFac. de Ciencias GeológicasTRUEMinisterio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO)pu

Reunión Ibérica sobre Fallas Activas y Paleosismología (3ª. 2018. Alicante). = We present to the scientific community the main changes that would affect the QAFI database in the process of updating to version 4. The name of the database changes, being now: “Quaternary-Active Faults…”. The term fault “segment” is substituted by “section”. Version 4 will not include automatic estimations of maximum magnitude nor recurrence interval. The spatial coverage of the database is extended to the north of Africa. A new complementary database with faults with proof of no Quaternary activity will be created. We also describe foreseen improvements in the visualization of the fault traces in the web application, and we ask for collaboration to improve the fault relationships with seismicity. Finally, we prospect about future uses of the QAFI database: active fault definition in Eurocode-8 and a seismogenic fault-sources database.Instituto Geológico y Minero de España, EspañaDepartamento de Geología y Geoquímica, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, EspañaDepartamento de Geodinámica, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, EspañaGrupo RISKNAT, Departament de Dinàmica de la Terra i de l’Oceà, Universitat de Barcelona, EspañaGeosciences Research Division, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, Estados UnidosInstituto de Ciencias del Mar, EspañaDepartamento de Ciencias de la Tierra, Universidad de Zaragoza, EspañaDepartamento de Biología y Geología, Física y Química Inorgánica, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, EspañaDepartamento de Ciencias de la Tierra y el Medio Ambiente, Universidad de Alicante, EspañaDepartamento de Geodinámica, Universidad de Granada, EspañaGNS Science, Nueva ZelandaDepartamento de Geologia, Universidade de Lisboa, PortugalUnidade de Geologia, Hidrogeologia e Geologia Costeira, Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia, Portuga

The Mice at play in the CALIFA survey: A case study of a gas-rich major merger between first passage and coalescence

    Get PDF
We present optical integral field spectroscopy (IFS) observations of the Mice, a major merger between two massive (>10^11Msol) gas-rich spirals NGC4676A and B, observed between first passage and final coalescence. The spectra provide stellar and gas kinematics, ionised gas properties and stellar population diagnostics, over the full optical extent of both galaxies. The Mice provide a perfect case study highlighting the importance of IFS data for improving our understanding of local galaxies. The impact of first passage on the kinematics of the stars and gas has been significant, with strong bars likely induced in both galaxies. The barred spiral NGC4676B exhibits a strong twist in both its stellar and ionised gas disk. On the other hand, the impact of the merger on the stellar populations has been minimal thus far: star formation induced by the recent close passage has not contributed significantly to the global star formation rate or stellar mass of the galaxies. Both galaxies show bicones of high ionisation gas extending along their minor axes. In NGC4676A the high gas velocity dispersion and Seyfert-like line ratios at large scaleheight indicate a powerful outflow. Fast shocks extend to ~6.6kpc above the disk plane. The measured ram pressure and mass outflow rate (~8-20Msol/yr) are similar to superwinds from local ULIRGs, although NGC4676A has only a moderate infrared luminosity of 3x10^10Lsol. Energy beyond that provided by the mechanical energy of the starburst appears to be required to drive the outflow. We compare the observations to mock kinematic and stellar population maps from a merger simulation. The models show little enhancement in star formation during and following first passage, in agreement with the observations. We highlight areas where IFS data could help further constrain the models.Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures, accepted to A&A. Staging Parkinson’s Disease Combining Motor and Nonmotor Symptoms Correlates with Disability and Quality of Life

    Get PDF
COPPADIS Study Group.[Introduction] In a degenerative disorder such as Parkinson’s disease (PD), it is important to establish clinical stages that allow to know the course of the disease. Our aim was to analyze whether a scale combining Hoehn and Yahr’s motor stage (H&Y) and the nonmotor symptoms burden (NMSB) (assessed by the nonmotor symptoms scale (NMSS)) provides information about the disability and the patient’s quality of life (QoL) with regard to a defined clinical stage.[Materials and Methods] Cross-sectional study in which 603 PD patients from the COPPADIS cohort were classified according to H&Y (1, stage I; 2, stage II; 3, stage III; 4, stage IV/V) and NMSB (A: NMSS = 0–20; B: NMSS = 21–40; C: NMSS = 41–70; D: NMSS ≥ 71) in 16 stages (HY.NMSB, from 1A to 4D). QoL was assessed with the PDQ-39SI, PQ-10, and EUROHIS-QOL8 and disability with the Schwab&England ADL (Activities of Daily Living) scale.[Results] A worse QoL and greater disability were observed at a higher stage of H&Y and NMSB (). Combining both (HY.NMSB), patients in stages 1C and 1D and 2C and 2D had significantly worse QoL and/or less autonomy for ADL than those in stages 2A and 2B and 3A and 3B, respectively (; e.g., PDQ-39SI in 1D [n = 15] vs 2A [n = 101]: 28.6 ± 17.1 vs 7.9 ± 5.8; ).[Conclusion] The HY.NMSB scale is simple and reflects the degree of patient involvement more accurately than the H&Y. Patients with a lower H&Y stage may be more affected if they have a greater NMS burden.Peer reviewe
