    Get PDF

Human Neural Cells Transiently Express Reelin during Olfactory Placode Development.

Reelin, an extracellular glycoprotein is essential for migration and correct positioning of neurons during development. Since the olfactory system is known as a source of various migrating neuronal cells, we studied Reelin expression in the two chemosensory olfactory systems, main and accessory, during early developmental stages of human foetuses/embryos from Carnegie Stage (CS) 15 to gestational week (GW) 14. From CS 15 to CS 18, but not at later stages, a transient expression of Reelin was detected first in the presumptive olfactory and then in the presumptive vomeronasal epithelium. During the same period, Reelin-positive cells detach from the olfactory/vomeronasal epithelium and migrate through the mesenchyme beneath the telencephalon. Dab 1, an adaptor protein of the Reelin pathway, was simultaneously expressed in the migratory mass from CS16 to CS17 and, at later stages, in the presumptive olfactory ensheathing cells. Possible involvements of Reelin and Dab 1 in the peripheral migrating stream are discussed.journal articleresearch support, non-u.s. gov't20152015 08 13importe

Comparisons Between Tridentate Bis(benzazoles)-pyridine and Bis(benzazoles)triazine Ligands: a Theoretical Study

    Get PDF
Twelve bis(benzazole) structures with potential ligand character were investigated by means of computational chemistry. Global and local reactivity descriptors within DFT (Density Functional Theory) theory (Fukui functions, chemical potential, hardness, electrophilicity index) have been computed at B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level of theory. NICS(0) (Nucleus Independent Chemical Shift) index computations were employed for the evaluation of the local aromatic character of each heterocyclic moiety. Best results have been reported for the bis(benzimidazole) derivatives. Copper and zinc complexes of the investigated tridentate ligands have been proposed

The role of activation functions 1 and 2 of estrogen receptor-α for the effects of estradiol and selective estrogen receptor modulators in male mice

Estradiol (E2) is important for male skeletal health and the effect of E2 is mediated via estrogen receptor (ER)-α. This was demonstrated by the findings that men with an inactivating mutation in aromatase or a non-functional ERα had osteopenia and continued longitudinal growth after sexual maturation. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the role of different domains of ERα for the effects of E2 and SERMs on bone mass in males. Three mouse models lacking either ERαAF-1 (ERαAF-1(0)), ERαAF-2 (ERαAF-2(0)) or the total ERα (ERα(−/−)) were orchidectomized (orx) and treated with E2 or placebo. E2 treatment increased the trabecular and cortical bone mass and bone strength, while it reduced the thymus weight and bone marrow cellularity in orx wild type (WT) mice. These parameters did not respond to E2 treatment in orx ERα(−/−) or ERαAF-2(0) mice. However, the effects of E2 in orx ERαAF-1(0) mice were tissue-dependent, with a clear response in cortical bone parameters and bone marrow cellularity, but no response in trabecular bone. To determine the role of ERαAF-1 for the effects of SERMs, we treated orx WT and ERαAF-1(0) mice with Raloxifene (Ral), Lasofoxifene (Las), Bazedoxifene (Bza) or vehicle. These SERMs increased total body areal bone mineral density (BMD) and trabecular volumetric BMD to a similar extent in orx WT mice. Furthermore, only Las increased cortical thickness significantly and only Bza increased bone strength significantly. However, all SERMs showed a tendency towards increased cortical bone parameters. Importantly, all SERM-effects were absent in the orx ERαAF-1(0) mice. In conclusion, ERαAF-2 is required for the estrogenic effects on all evaluated parameters, while the role of ERαAF-1 is tissue specific. All evaluated effects of Ral, Las and Bza are dependent on a functional ERαAF-1. Our findings might contribute to the development of bone specific SERMs in males

Review of biochar role as additive in anaerobic digestion processes

because of the urgent need to provide renewable energy sources and efficiently manage the continuously growing amount of organic waste. Biochar (BC) is an extremely versatile material, which could be produced by carbonization of organic materials, including biomass and wastes, consistently with Circular Economy principles, and “tailor-made” for specific applications. The potential BC role as additive in the control of the many wellknown critical issues of AD processes has been increasingly explored over the past few years. However, a clear and comprehensive understanding of the connections between BC and AD is still missing. This review paper analyses and discusses significant references (review articles, research papers and international databases and reports), mostly published in the last 10 years. This review is aimed at addressing three key issues related to the better understanding of the BC role in AD processes: 1. Investigation of the influence of BC properties on AD performances and of their ability to counteract its main challenges; 2. Assessment of the optimal BC production chain (i.e. feedstock-pyrolysis-activation) to achieve the desired features; 3. Evaluation of the economic and environmental advantages connected to BC use in AD processes, compared to conventional solutions applied to address AD challenges

We generated a fourth ERb-null mutant mouse using Cre-mediated DNA recombination (ERbSTL-/L-). ERbSTL-/L- mice are sterile. No other organ or physiological function are affected by ERb absence. We generated mouse mutants bearing A/B domain deletion (ERaAF10), or F domain deletion (ERaAF20). The females are sterile, the ovary displays follicular cysts and an absence of corpora lutea, the uterus is hypoplastic. Sertoli cells are detectable in the ERaAF20 ovary. To study the role of E2 during liver regeneration, we used ERaKO and ERaAF10 mutant mice. 48 hours following partial hepatectomy, hepatocytes proliferation in ERaKO females is significantly reduced. 15 days after partial hepatectomy, ERaKO females display liver weight deficiency. Absence of the AF-1 function does not alter liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy
