This article aims to analyze university teaching from expressions and typifications made by university professors themselves in various occasions in their careers, collected in a survey. Using quantitative and qualitative methodology, field research utilized a questionnaire with open and closed questions, answered by four groups of 86 surveyed: incoming masters and doctoral students; teachers with five years of experience; teachers with a twenty--year career, and teachers with thirty years of teaching activity. The descriptions of teaching activities and of profiles made by these different groups revealed significant variations in perceptions of the university teaching profession and of the profile of such professional. It is concluded that the professional identities and careers of academics are constructed and reconstructed in a dynamic way, having undergone changes in the last thirty years. The terms and terminologies used by participants reveal some confusion between what the professor is and what he does, making it difficult to make a professional characterization or identity. A strong influence of specific academic education in undergraduate courses and the presence of technical and relational aspects defining the performance were indicated, but little emphasis on essential teaching preparation or education of persons conducting such activity. We also con-cluded that in the teaching career it should be given special attention to the processes of access, professionalisation, support for the development and evaluation of the work of teachers. The aim is thereby to improve the quality of the education of new professionals, the performance of professors in their teaching, in research and in extension, and to improve the university itself as preparer of citizens and skills for the current, competitive and changeable work market.

    Get PDF

Based on the worldwide proposition of energy matrix scenarios for 2050, the objective of this article is to present scenarios of electricity generation for Ceará in 2050, showing the participation of sources already used in the state's electric matrix and adding new ones. The article proposes three scenarios: a conservative one, where the present proportion of electricity generation sources of the state is maintained, a transitional one, with 50% of electricity generation from non-renewable sources and the other 50% from renewable sources, and 100% renewable, without the use of fossil or nuclear fuels. Estimates for 2050 in the state are obtained by extrapolating generation data from 2011 to 2017, reaching an estimated 94,775 GWh. In the conservative scenario, it is observed that half of this generation is made by thermoelectric plants and the other half by wind farms. In the transition scenario, dominated by the use of natural gas, the exponential growth of photovoltaic generation stands out. In the 100% renewable scenario, dominated by wind farms, in addition to the similar growth of photovoltaic generation as in the transition scenario, we highlight the use of urban solid waste and solar thermal concentration plants.

This work was funded by ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) through the operations: POCI- -01-0145-FEDER-029130 (“mINSPIRERS—mHealth to measure and improve adherence to medication in chronic obstructive respiratory diseases - generalisation and evaluation of gamification, peer support and advanced image processing technologies”) co-funded by the COMPETE2020 (Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalização), Portugal 2020 and by Portuguese Funds through FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia).© 2020, Sociedade Portuguesa de Alergologia e Imunologia Clinica. All rights reserved. Aims: To identify distinct asthma control clusters based on Control of Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma Test (CARAT) and to compare patients’ characteristics among these clusters. Methods: Adults and adolescents (≥13 years) with persistent asthma were recruited at 29 Portuguese hospital outpatient clinics, in the context of two observational studies of the INSPIRERS project. Demographic and clinical characteristics, adherence to inhaled medication, beliefs about inhaled medication, anxiety and depression, quality of life, and asthma control (CARAT, >24 good control) were collected. Hierarchical cluster analysis was performed using CARAT total score (CARAT-T). Results: 410 patients (68% adults), with a median (percentile 25–percentile 75) age of 28 (16-46) years, were analysed. Three clusters were identified [mean CARAT-T (min-max)]: cluster 1 [27(24-30)], cluster 2 [19(14-23)] and cluster 3 [10(2-13)]. Patients in cluster 1 (34%) were characterised by better asthma control, better quality of life, higher inhaler adherence and use of a single inhaler. Patients in clusters 2 (50%) and 3 (16%) had uncontrolled asthma, lower inhaler adherence, more symptoms of anxiety and depression and more than half had at least one exacerbation in the previous year. Further-more, patients in cluster 3 were predominantly female, had more unscheduled medical visits and more anxiety symp-toms, perceived a higher necessity of their prescribed inhalers but also higher levels of concern about taking these inhalers. There were no differences in age, body mass index, lung function, smoking status, hospital admissions or specialist physician follow-up time among the three clusters. Conclusion: An unsupervised method based on CARAT--T, identified 3 clusters of patients with distinct, clinically meaningful characteristics. The cluster with better asthma control had a cut-off similar to the established in the validation study of CARAT and an additional cut-off seems to distinguish more severe disease. Further research is necessary to validate the asthma control clusters identified.publishersversionpublishe

Taking the pulse of Earth's tropical forests using networks of highly distributed plots

Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science. Our core approach involves linking long-term grassroots initiatives with standardized protocols and data management to generate robust scaled-up results. By connecting tropical researchers and elevating their status, our Social Research Network model recognises the key role of the data originator in scientific discovery. Conceived in 1999 with RAINFOR (South America), our permanent plot networks have been adapted to Africa (AfriTRON) and Southeast Asia (T-FORCES) and widely emulated worldwide. Now these multiple initiatives are integrated via ForestPlots.net cyber-infrastructure, linking colleagues from 54 countries across 24 plot networks. Collectively these are transforming understanding of tropical forests and their biospheric role. Together we have discovered how, where and why forest carbon and biodiversity are responding to climate change, and how they feedback on it. This long-term pan-tropical collaboration has revealed a large long-term carbon sink and its trends, as well as making clear which drivers are most important, which forest processes are affected, where they are changing, what the lags are, and the likely future responses of tropical forests as the climate continues to change. By leveraging a remarkably old technology, plot networks are sparking a very modern revolution in tropical forest science. In the future, humanity can benefit greatly by nurturing the grassroots communities now collectively capable of generating unique, long-term understanding of Earth's most precious forests.Additional co-authors: Susan Laurance, William Laurance, Francoise Yoko Ishida, Andrew Marshall, Catherine Waite, Hannsjoerg Woell, Jean-Francois Bastin, Marijn Bauters, Hans Beeckman, Pfascal Boeckx, Jan Bogaert, Charles De Canniere, Thales de Haulleville, Jean-Louis Doucet, Olivier Hardy, Wannes Hubau, Elizabeth Kearsley, Hans Verbeeck, Jason Vleminckx, Steven W. Get PDF
_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTObjective: To determine and to describe the prevalence of some risk factors for cardiovascular disease and its association, in the Quirinópolis adult population, with the purpose of subsidizing intervention programs and the local risk factors surveillance. Methods: It was done a crossectional based-population study including people aged 15 and more, from urban and rural region. The data was obtained through a standardized questionnaire that included blood pressure and anthropometrics measures in the household and the laboratorial tests. Results: A sample of 714 people was used and 55,3% were women. The prevalence of Hypertension was: 38,8%; Diabetes: 6%; Self-reported hypertension and Diabetes: 21% and 5%; Overweight: 46,5%; Large waist circumference: 48,7%; Smoking: 23,1%; Risk alcohol intake: 13,2%; Leisure-time physical inactive: 76,4%; High level Cholesterol and triglycerides: 16,7% and 12,2%. The obesity, physical inactive and waist circumference prevalence were higher in women. The other risk factors were higher in men. The prevalence of the most risk factors increased with age, as well as the number of simultaneous factors, especially in the hypertensive people. It was also found an association between educational level, income and most of the risk factors. The masculine sex, age, overweight and obesity, waist circumference, diabetes, cholesterol and triglycerides were associated with hypertension on the simple analysis, but after logistic regression analysis, the factors remained were age, waist circumference and glycemia (diabetes). Conclusion: The prevalence of most risk factors was very high. The difference between the self-reported hypertension and diabetes prevalence and the ones found by measures shows that people are unaware of their health problems. These found aim to the necessity of reorganizing the local health system in all levels and developing intervention programs ant the same time of a risk factors surveillance system
