Múltiplos e diferentes caminhos para ser negro e respeitado em Uberlândia (1983-2000)

Este artigo aborda diferentes caminhos percorridos por homens e mulheres negros em Uberlândia na disputa por espaços e reconhecimento social. Diferentes instrumentos são usados nessas formas de luta, motivadas por iguais processos de exclusão social. Para compreender como se tecem práticas políticas e culturais e suas possíveis interconexões escolhemos as narrativas orais e a imprensa local como fontes históricas privilegiadas nessa análise

(Re)significações culturais no mundo rural mineiro: o carro de boi - do trabalho ao festar (1950-2000)

Este artigo versa sobre a reinvenção de uma das atividades de trabalho mais comuns ao mundo rural do interior de Minas Gerais. Nesse cenário, o carro de bois era parte integrante de uma economia de subsistência, cujas relações sociais eram mediadas pela interação do homem com a natureza. Na década de 1970, com as transformações econômicas, quando o cerrado torna-se terras produtivas em grãos para exportação, o carro de bois é celebrado em festa popular e as práticas sociais em seu entorno são (re)figuradas, (re)significando sociabilidades e memórias de um tempo que não mais existe.<br>This article argues about the reinvention of a common work activity from the agricultural world in Minas Gerais countryside. In this work activity, the ox-cart was integrant part of a subsistence economy, whose social relations were mediated by the interaction of the man with the nature. In the 1970's, with the economic transformations, when the open pasture becomes productive lands in grains for exportation, the ox-cart is celebrated in a popular party and the social practical related to it is transformed, earning a new social meanning and memories of a time that does not exist anymore

A magia da escola na escola da magia: a escola que se inscreve nas histórias sobre Harry Potter School magic in the magical school: the school that teaches through stories of Harry Potter

Neste texto, apresentamse posições enunciadas por educadores e analistas da cultura sobre a escola e examinase a sua configuração nas histórias de J. K. Rowling sobre Harry Potter. As análises inspiramse nos Estudos Culturais em sua articulação com a Educação, considerandose atuarem as histórias como pedagogias culturais. Destacamse seus efeitos produtivos no cinema, na web, na comercialização de produtos diversos e na academia e atentase para seu papel na configuração discursiva da escola e dos sujeitos que a frequentam. Tais efeitos ultrapassam a dimensão do entretenimento dos nem sempre jovens leitores/consumidores dos textos e artefatos delas originados ou seu sucesso mercadológico! A escola ganha centralidade nessas histórias que narram lutas entre personagens do bem e forças do mal e nelas (re)afirmase a sua importância, excelência e competência para a formação sistemática de jovens (em magia) e para a apropriação e o desenvolvimento dos saberes e tradições (bruxas).<br>In this text we study positions advanced by educators and school observers, and examine how school is shaped in stories J. K. Rowling wrote about Harry Potter. Analyses were inspired by the Cultural Studies in their work with Education, considering that these stories act as cultural pedagogies. We highlight a host of powerful effects in the cinema, the Web, in the marketing of many products, in the Academy, and we focus on the role stories play in the discursive configuration of school and subjects narrated in such stories. We show that their powerful effects go beyond entertainment for not only young readers/consumers of the different texts and artefacts created, but also due to their market success! The school plays an important role in the representations conveyed in these stories, whose main theme is the battle between good and evil. These stories do not raise questions about school; its significance, excellence and power are constantly (re)assured to systematically graduate young magicians and to encourage the appropriation and development of the knowledge and the tradition of witchcraft

Characterisation of microbial attack on archaeological bone

As part of an EU funded project to investigate the factors influencing bone preservation in the archaeological record, more than 250 bones from 41 archaeological sites in five countries spanning four climatic regions were studied for diagenetic alteration. Sites were selected to cover a range of environmental conditions and archaeological contexts. Microscopic and physical (mercury intrusion porosimetry) analyses of these bones revealed that the majority (68%) had suffered microbial attack. Furthermore, significant differences were found between animal and human bone in both the state of preservation and the type of microbial attack present. These differences in preservation might result from differences in early taphonomy of the bones. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved
