However, lattice oxygen loss and irreversible structural transformations over the first cycle may result in large voltage hysteresis, thereby impeding practical application. Herein, ribbon superstructure ordering of Li/transition-metal-ions was applied to suppress the voltage hysteresis combined with Ti-substitution to improve the cycling stability for P3-Na0.67Li0.2Ti0.15Mn0.65O2. When both cation and anion redox reactions are utilized, Na0.67Li0.2Ti0.15Mn0.65O2 delivers a reversible capacity of 172 mA h g−1 after 25 cycles at 10 mA g−1 between 1.6–4.4 V vs. Na+/Na. Ex-situ X-ray diffraction data reveal that the ribbon superstructure is retained with negligible unit cell volume expansion/contraction upon sodiation/desodiation. The performance as a positive electrode for Li-ion batteries was also evaluated and P3-Na0.67Li0.2Ti0.15Mn0.65O2 delivers a reversible capacity of 180 mA h g−1 after 25 cycles at 10 mA g−1 when cycled vs. Li+/Li between 2.0–4.8 V.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

Chromatic Illumination Discrimination Ability Reveals that Human Colour Constancy Is Optimised for Blue Daylight Illuminations

The phenomenon of colour constancy in human visual perception keeps surface colours constant, despite changes in their reflected light due to changing illumination. Although colour constancy has evolved under a constrained subset of illuminations, it is unknown whether its underlying mechanisms, thought to involve multiple components from retina to cortex, are optimised for particular environmental variations. Here we demonstrate a new method for investigating colour constancy using illumination matching in real scenes which, unlike previous methods using surface matching and simulated scenes, allows testing of multiple, real illuminations. We use real scenes consisting of solid familiar or unfamiliar objects against uniform or variegated backgrounds and compare discrimination performance for typical illuminations from the daylight chromaticity locus (approximately blue-yellow) and atypical spectra from an orthogonal locus (approximately red-green, at correlated colour temperature 6700 K), all produced in real time by a 10-channel LED illuminator. We find that discrimination of illumination changes is poorer along the daylight locus than the atypical locus, and is poorest particularly for bluer illumination changes, demonstrating conversely that surface colour constancy is best for blue daylight illuminations. Illumination discrimination is also enhanced, and therefore colour constancy diminished, for uniform backgrounds, irrespective of the object type. These results are not explained by statistical properties of the scene signal changes at the retinal level. We conclude that high-level mechanisms of colour constancy are biased for the blue daylight illuminations and variegated backgrounds to which the human visual system has typically been exposed

Algorithm for prediction of tumour suppressor p53 affinity for binding sites in DNA

The tumour suppressor p53 is a transcription factor that binds DNA in the vicinity of the genes it controls. The affinity of p53 for specific binding sites relative to other DNA sequences is an inherent driving force for specificity, all other things being equal. We measured the binding affinities of systematically mutated consensus p53 DNA-binding sequences using automated fluorescence anisotropy titrations. Based on measurements of the effects of every possible single base-pair substitution of a consensus sequence, we defined the DNA sequence with the highest affinity for full-length p53 and quantified the effects of deviation from it on the strength of protein–DNA interaction. The contributions of individual nucleotides were to a first approximation independent and additive. But, in some cases we observed significant deviations from additivity. Based on affinity data, we constructed a binding predictor that mirrored the existing p53 consensus sequence definition. We used it to search for high-affinity binding sites in the genome and to predict the effects of single-nucleotide polymorphisms in these sites. Although there was some correlation between the Kd and biological function, the spread of the Kds by itself was not sufficient to explain the activation of different pathways by changes in p53 concentration alone

A systematic study of the optical properties of mononuclear hybrid organo-inorganic lanthanoid complexes

A series of hybrid organo-inorganic mononuclear lanthanoid complexes, [n-NBu4]3[LnH(PW11O39)(phen)2]·H2O, denoted as LM4-1-Ln (Ln = DyIII, TbIII, EuIII, NdIII, ErIII, HoIII and GdIII), were synthesized via hydrothermal synthesis and were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. The optical properties of all complexes have been investigated in the solid state. The temperature-dependent emission spectra of LM4-1-Dy, LM4-1-Tb and LM4-1-Eu complexes show intense lanthanoid emissions in the visible region, while LM4-1-Nd shows near-infrared (NIR) luminescence. The EuIII complex shows typical strong red emissions from the 5D0 → 7F0,1,2,3,4 transitions, with the CIE colour coordinates (0.631,0.364), the colour purity value of 83.9% and a quantum yield of up to 4.3%, suggesting that the organic fragment has an effect on the optical properties compared to fully inorganic systems, making this complex very attractive as a red component of light-emitting diodes. The luminescence decays of LM4-1-Dy, LM4-1-Tb and LM4-1-Eu exhibit a biexponential behaviour, with τAV = 4.1(7) μs, 0.35(2) ms and 0.94(3) ms, respectively. The values obtained for Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters Ω2 and Ω4 support the interaction between the EuIII and the ligands. Furthermore, those with ErIII and HoIII present weak emissions in the visible region. The T-dependent photoluminescence results show that the LM4-1-Dy, LM4-1-Tb and LM4-1-Nd complexes have good temperature sensitivity, demonstrating that the materials have the potential to be used as a sensing element for luminescent thermometers in different temperature ranges

Forest biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and the provision of ecosystem services

Forests are critical habitats for biodiversity and they are also essential for the provision of a wide range of ecosystem services that are important to human well-being. There is increasing evidence that biodiversity contributes to forest ecosystem functioning and the provision of ecosystem services. Here we provide a review of forest ecosystem services including biomass production, habitat provisioning services, pollination, seed dispersal, resistance to wind storms, fire regulation and mitigation, pest regulation of native and invading insects, carbon sequestration, and cultural ecosystem services, in relation to forest type, structure and diversity. We also consider relationships between forest biodiversity and multifunctionality, and trade-offs among ecosystem services. We compare the concepts of ecosystem processes, functions and services to clarify their definitions. Our review of published studies indicates a lack of empirical studies that establish quantitative and causal relationships between forest biodiversity and many important ecosystem services. The literature is highly skewed; studies on provisioning of nutrition and energy, and on cultural services, delivered by mixed-species forests are under-represented. Planted forests offer ample opportunity for optimising their composition and diversity because replanting after harvesting is a recurring process. Planting mixed-species forests should be given more consideration as they are likely to provide a wider range of ecosystem services within the forest and for adjacent land uses. This review also serves as the introduction to this special issue of Biodiversity and Conservation on various aspects of forest biodiversity and ecosystem services
