    Cooperative Learning in the Implementation of Teaching Chemistry (Didactic Instrumentation) in Engineering in México

    AbstractIn engineering you think of chemistry as a difficult and boring subject. Some professors who are teaching it, have seen apathy and lack of interest in the students. This paper presents some findings of an investigation done which allowed to listen to the voice of 250 Mexican students regarding the usefulness of cooperative learning in chemistry. An exploratory-descriptive methodology was applied, together with a pretest and a post-test. By implementing the Cooperative Learning, the importance of the positive interdependence for critical thinking was appraised and a move away was detected from the theoretical content and meaning of the everyday context of the students

    BRIVA-LIFE–A multicenter retrospective study of the long-term use of brivaracetam in clinical practice

    Objectives: Evaluate long-term effectiveness and tolerability of brivaracetam in clinical practice in patients with focal epilepsy. Materials and Methods: This was a multicenter retrospective study. Patients aged =16 years were started on brivaracetam from November 2016 to June 2017 and followed over 1 year. Data were obtained from medical records at 3, 6 and 12 months after treatment initiation for evaluation of safety- and seizure-related outcomes. Results: A total of 575 patients were included in analyses; most had been treated with =4 lifetime antiepileptic drugs. Target dosage was achieved by 30.6% of patients on the first day. Analysis of primary variables at 12 months revealed that mean reduction in seizure frequency was 36.0%, 39.7% of patients were =50% responders and 17.5% were seizure-free. Seizure-freedom was achieved by 37.5% of patients aged =65 years. Incidence of adverse events (AEs) and psychiatric AEs (PAEs) was 39.8% and 14.3%, respectively, and discontinuation due to these was 8.9% and 3.7%, respectively. Somnolence, irritability, and dizziness were the most frequently reported AEs. At baseline, 228 (39.7%) patients were being treated with levetiracetam; most switched to brivaracetam (dose ratio 1:10-15). Among those who switched because of PAEs (n = 53), 9 (17%) reported PAEs on brivaracetam, and 3 (5.7%) discontinued because of PAEs. Tolerability was not highly affected among patients with learning disability or psychiatric comorbidity. Conclusions: In a large population of patients with predominantly drug-resistant epilepsy, brivaracetam was effective and well-tolerated; no unexpected AEs occurred over 1 year, and the incidence of PAEs was lower compared with levetiracetam

    The materials on nanosized dimension exhibit properties that can be significantly different from their massive counterpart, for this reason the increasing investigation developed in this domain continues advancing. Tb<sup>3+</sup> and Eu<sup>3+</sup> doped Y<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> in the nanoscale size were obtained by the polyol mediated synthesis. This work presents a general view of nanoparticle synthesis and the aggregation of the same, in order to form nanostructured materials with luminescent properties. Nanometric and nanostructured materials were evaluated by luminescence spectroscopy where the emission spectra observations for the two materials show high similarity. These observations confirm on the one hand that Tb<sup>3+</sup> and Eu<sup>3+</sup> ions are located in the Y<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> matrix, on the other hand that the aggregate material are constituted by nanoparticles with resembling size (5 nm).<br><br>Los materiales a escala nanométrica presentan en general propiedades diferentes a las que presentan las mismas composiciones en estado masivo, motivo por el cual, se incrementa cada día el interés por su estudio fundamental y sus aplicaciones en sistemas de nueva tecnología. Utilizando el método poliol se obtuvieron materiales nanométricos de Y<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> dopado con Tb<sup>3+</sup> y Eu<sup>3+</sup>. Este documento presenta un panorama general de la síntesis de las nanopartículas y la agregación de las mismas para formar nanoestructuras con propiedades luminiscentes. Los dos tipos de nanomateriales fueron evaluados por espectroscopia de luminiscencia y las observaciones de sus espectros de emisión muestran una gran similitud entre ellos, con lo cual se confirma por un lado que los iones de Tb y Eu se han integrado en la matriz de Y<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> y por otro lado, que el material agregado está constituido de nanopartículas con un tamaño semejante (5 nm)
