The clinical and immunological basis of early food introduction in food allergy prevention
IgE-mediated food allergy has an estimated prevalence of 6%–10% in developed countries. Allergen avoidance has long been the main focus in the prevention of food allergy and late solid food introduction after 6–12 months of age was recommended in high-risk infants. However, the rising prevalence of food allergy despite delayed exposure to allergens and the observations that IgE-mediated sensitization to food products could even occur before the introduction of solid foods resulted in a shift towards early solid food introduction as an attempt to prevent IgE-mediated food allergy. Since then, many trials focused on the clinical outcome of early allergen introduction and overall seem to point to a protective effect on the development of IgE-mediated food allergies. For non-IgE-mediated diseases of food allergy, evidence of early food introduction seems less clear. Moreover, data on the underlying immunological processes in early food introduction is lacking. The goal of this review is to summarize the available data of immunological changes in early food introduction to prevent IgE and non-IgE mediated food allergy
The Short-term Car Flow Planning Model in Rail Freight Company – Case Study
AbstractWith the promotion of the environmentally friendly transportation modes (the European Commission supports the freight transport operations in the rail sector), an increase in the diversification of the demand is observed. While most rail freight companies tend to apply fixed schedules, this approach is not effective turns out to be ineffective due to the need to meet the customer's specific requirements.The purpose of this paper is to present a case study of empty wagon flow planning over a medium term horizon and to discuss the opportunities of improvement of this plans by discrete optimization. In order to increase the utilization and availability of wagons, the planning procedure with a rolling horizon has to be implemented. Unfortunately, since the plan has to be updated ca. every 4hours, this planning approach needs effective optimization tools. Our hybrid two-stage approach is designed to be implemented in such business environment. This formulation allows us to solve real life instances even for a 7-day time horizon
The MultiSite Spectroscopic Telescope campaign: 2m spectroscopy of the V361 Hya variable PG1605+072
We present results and analysis for the 2m spectroscopic part of the
MultiSite Spectroscopic Telescope (MSST) campaign undertaken in May/June 2002.
The goal of the project was to observe the pulsating subdwarf B star PG1605+072
simultaneously in velocity and photometry and to resolve as many of the >50
known modes as possible, which will allow a detailed asteroseismological
analysis. We have obtained over 150 hours of spectroscopy, leading to an
unprecedented noise level of only 207m/s. We report here the detection of 20
frequencies in velocity, with two more likely just below our detection
threshold. In particular, we detect 6 linear combinations, making PG1605+072
only the second star known to show such frequencies in velocity. We investigate
the phases of these combinations and their parent modes and find relationships
between them that cannot be easily understood based on current theory. These
observations, when combined with our simultaneous photometry, should allow
asteroseismology of this most complicated of sdB pulsators.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A; Figure 1 at

The association of cancer survival with four socioeconomic indicators: a longitudinal study of the older population of England and Wales 1981–2000
BACKGROUND: Many studies have found socioeconomic differentials in cancer survival. Previous studies have generally demonstrated poorer cancer survival with decreasing socioeconomic status but mostly used only ecological measures of status and analytical methods estimating simple survival. This study investigate socio-economic differentials in cancer survival using four indicators of socioeconomic status; three individual and one ecological. It uses a relative survival method which gives a measure of excess mortality due to cancer. METHODS: This study uses prospective record linkage data from The Office for National Statistics Longitudinal Study for England and Wales. The participants are Longitudinal Study members, recorded at census in 1971 and 1981 and with a primary malignant cancer diagnosed at age 45 or above, between 1981 and 1997, with follow-up until end 2000. The outcome measure is relative survival/excess mortality, compared with age and sex adjusted survival of the general population. Relative survival and Poisson regression analyses are presented, giving models of relative excess mortality, adjusted for covariates. RESULTS: Different socioeconomic indicators detect survival differentials of varying magnitude and definition. For all cancers combined, the four indicators show similar effects. For individual cancers there are differences between indicators. Where there is an association, all indicators show poorer survival with lower socioeconomic status. CONCLUSION: Cancer survival differs markedly by socio-economic status. The commonly used ecological measure, the Carstairs Index, is adequate at demonstrating socioeconomic differentials in survival for combined cancers and some individual cancers. A combination of car access and housing tenure is more sensitive than the ecological Carstairs measure at detecting socioeconomic effects on survival – confirming Carstairs effects where they occur but additionally identifying effects for other cancers. Social class is a relatively weak indicator of survival differentials
Determination of the mass of the neutron star in SMC X-1, LMC X-4 and Cen X-3 with VLT/UVES
We present the results of a spectroscopic monitoring campaign of the OB-star
companions to the eclipsing X-ray pulsars SMC X-1, LMC X-4 and Cen X-3.
High-resolution optical spectra obtained with UVES on the ESO Very Large
Telescope are used to determine the radial-velocity orbit of the OB
(super)giants with high precision. The excellent quality of the spectra
provides the opportunity to measure the radial-velocity curve based on
individual lines, and to study the effect of possible distortions of the line
profiles due to e.g. X-ray heating on the derived radial-velocity amplitude.
Several spectral lines show intrinsic variations with orbital phase. The
magnitude of these variations depends on line strength, and thus provides a
criterion to select lines that do not suffer from distortions. The undistorted
lines show a larger radial-velocity amplitude than the distorted lines,
consistent with model predictions. Application of our line-selection criteria
results in a mean radial-velocity amplitude K(Opt) of 20.2 +/- 1.1, 35.1 +/-
1.5, and 27.5 +/- 2.3 km/s (1 sigma errors), for the OB companion to SMC X-1,
LMC X-4 and Cen X-3, respectively. Adding information on the projected
rotational velocity of the OB companion (derived from our spectra), the
duration of X-ray eclipse and orbital parameters of the X-ray pulsar (obtained
from literature), we arrive at a neutron star mass of 1.06^{+0.11}_{-0.10},
1.25^{+0.11}_{-0.10} and 1.34^{+0.16}_{-0.14} M{sun} for SMC X-1, LMC X-4 and
Cen X-3, respectively. The mass of SMC X-1 is near the minimum mass (~1 M{sun})
expected for a neutron star produced in a supernova. We discuss the
implications of the measured mass distribution on the neutron-star formation
mechanism, in relation to the evolutionary history of the massive binaries.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic
An asteroseismic study of the beta Cephei star 12 Lacertae: multisite spectroscopic observations, mode identification and seismic modelling
We present the results of a spectroscopic multisite campaign for the beta
Cephei star 12 (DD) Lacertae. Our study is based on more than thousand
high-resolution high S/N spectra gathered with 8 different telescopes in a time
span of 11 months. In addition we make use of numerous archival spectroscopic
measurements. We confirm 10 independent frequencies recently discovered from
photometry, as well as harmonics and combination frequencies. In particular,
the SPB-like g-mode with frequency 0.3428 1/d reported before is detected in
our spectroscopy. We identify the four main modes as (l1,m1) = (1, 1), (l2,m2)
= (0, 0), (l3,m3) = (1, 0) and (l4,m4) = (2, 1) for f1 = 5.178964 1/d, f2 =
5.334224 1/d, f3 = 5.066316 1/d and f4 = 5.490133 1/d, respectively. Our
seismic modelling shows that f2 is likely the radial first overtone and that
the core overshooting parameter alpha_ov is lower than 0.4 local pressure scale

Haiku - a Scala combinator toolkit for semi-automated composition of metaheuristics
There is an emerging trend towards the automated design of metaheuristics at the software component level. In principle, metaheuristics have a relatively clean decomposition, where well-known frameworks such as ILS and EA are parametrised by variant components for acceptance, perturbation etc. Automated generation of these frameworks is not so simple in practice, since the coupling between components may be implementation specific. Compositionality is the ability to freely express a space of designs ‘bottom up’ in terms of elementary components: previous work in this area has used combinators, a modular and functional approach to componentisation arising from foundational Computer Science. In this article, we describeHaiku, a combinator tool-kit written in the Scala language, which builds upon previous work to further automate the process by automatically composing the external dependencies of components. We provide examples of use and give a case study in which a programatically-generated heuristic is applied to the Travelling Salesman Problem within an Evolutionary Strategies framework
Impact of a programme of mass mammography screening for breast cancer on socio-economic variation in survival: a population-based study
Catalog of Galactic Beta Cephei Stars
We present an extensive and up-to-date catalog of Galactic Beta Cephei stars.
This catalog is intended to give a comprehensive overview of observational
characteristics of all known Beta Cephei stars. 93 stars could be confirmed to
be Beta Cephei stars. For some stars we re-analyzed published data or conducted
our own analyses. 61 stars were rejected from the final Beta Cephei list, and
77 stars are suspected to be Beta Cephei stars. A list of critically selected
pulsation frequencies for confirmed Beta Cephei stars is also presented. We
analyze the Beta Cephei stars as a group, such as the distributions of their
spectral types, projected rotational velocities, radial velocities, pulsation
periods, and Galactic coordinates. We confirm that the majority of these stars
are multiperiodic pulsators. We show that, besides two exceptions, the Beta
Cephei stars with high pulsation amplitudes are slow rotators. We construct a
theoretical HR diagram that suggests that almost all 93 Beta Cephei stars are
MS objects. We discuss the observational boundaries of Beta Cephei pulsation
and their physical parameters. We corroborate that the excited pulsation modes
are near to the radial fundamental mode in frequency and we show that the mass
distribution of the stars peaks at 12 solar masses. We point out that the
theoretical instability strip of the Beta Cephei stars is filled neither at the
cool nor at the hot end and attempt to explain this observation
