Social media analytics: analysis and visualisation of news diffusion using NodeXL
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of NodeXL in the context of news diffusion. Journalists often include a social media dimension in their stories but lack the tools to get digital photos of the virtual crowds about which they write. NodeXL is an easy to use tool for collecting, analysing, visualising and reporting on the patterns found in collections of connections in streams of social media. With a network map patterns emerge that highlight key people, groups, divisions and bridges, themes and related resources. Design/methodology/approach This study conducts a literature review of previous empirical work which has utilised NodeXL and highlights the potential of NodeXL to provide network insights of virtual crowds during emerging news events. It then develops a number of guidelines which can be utilised by news media teams to measure and map information diffusion during emerging news events. Findings One emergent software application known as NodeXL has allowed journalists to take “group photos” of the connections among a group of users on social media. It was found that a diverse range of disciplines utilise NodeXL in academic research. Furthermore, based on the features of NodeXL, a number of guidelines were developed which provide insight into how to measure and map emerging news events on Twitter. Social implications With a set of social media network images a journalist can cover a set of social media content streams and quickly grasp “situational awareness” of the shape of the crowd. Since social media popular support is often cited but not documented, NodeXL social media network maps can help journalists quickly document the social landscape utilising an innovative approach. Originality/value This is the first empirical study to review literature on NodeXL, and to provide insight into the value of network visualisations and analytics for the news media domain. Moreover, it is the first empirical study to develop guidelines that will act as a valuable resource for newsrooms looking to acquire insight into emerging news events from the stream of social media posts. In the era of fake news and automated accounts, i.e., bots the ability to highlight opinion leaders and ascertain their allegiances will be of importance in today’s news climate
An Analysis of Twitter Usage Among Startups in Europe
Startups are becoming part of the development of policies by the European Commission and corporate strategies. The business press widely covers startups, as does the other media. Local governments in Europe are also developing financial and administrative programs to support startups. Most industries now use social media, and in particular Twitter, to reach their customers. Twitter provides startups the opportunity to reach a global audience at a relatively low cost and still support both promotion and branding. However, there’s a lack of evidence-based research, which examines the Twitter usage among startups within the European Union (EU). This paper outlines preliminary findings about Twitter usage among EU startup founders and contributes to an ongoing study that seeks to define the concept of a startup. Exploring Twitter usage among European startup founders could provide insight into their behavior and expand overall knowledge of how to best define the concept of a startup. The authors retrieved data used in the analysis from one of the most extensive EU databases, F6S.com. The authors collected the Twitter data user handles of EU startups in June and August 2015 and manually verified each Twitter account, which allowed the retrieval of data. The authors then entered the verified data (i.e., verified Twitter accounts) into the Twitter Archiving Google Sheets (TAGS) system that collected data for the purpose this longitudinal study.The results of this research provide insight into temporal dynamics of Twitter usage, including Twitter account creation, followers, and tweets. There are statistically significant correlations between the Twitter activity of EU startups and the invested amount in that country overall and per capita. This paper offers a methodological contribution in regard to the social media data retrieval techniques, which can provide an insight into Twitter usage among EU startups founders
Baclofen-induced dyshidrosiform bullous pemphigoid in a paraplegic patient complicated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (mrsa) and urinary infection
Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an autoimmune disorder which is usually chronic, with blistering that predominantly affects the skin and occasionally the mucosa, and which includes several different types. One of them is a very rare dyshidrosiform type which is localized on the hands and feet with small or large blisters on the palmoplantar surfaces. BP resulting from a drug reaction is a relatively rare occurrence, and so far more than 50 different medications have been identified as triggers. The aim of this article was to present the case of a paraplegic patient who developed this rare dyshidrosiform type of BP while he was being neurologically treated with baclofen. In spite of therapy with systemic and topical corticosteroids and other measures, successful treatment was achieved only after eliminating baclofen from the patient’s regimen. His general state of health was seriously endangered due to nasal and skin methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), urinary infection, and oral mycosis (soor), and he was at high risk of sepsis and a fatal outcome. Through our efforts, however, we managed to achieve an excellent outcome. According to our knowledge, this was the first case of baclofen-induced dyshidrosiform BP. </p
Photobinding of Triflusal to Human Serum Albumin Investigated by Fluorescence, Proteomic Analysis, and Computational Studies
[EN] Triflusal is a platelet antiaggregant employed for the treatment and prevention of thromboembolic diseases. After administration, it is biotransformed into its active metabolite, the 2-hydroxy-4-trifluoromethylbenzoic acid (HTB). We present here an investigation on HTB photobinding to human serum albumin (HSA), the most abundant protein in plasma, using an approach that combines fluorescence, MS/MS, and peptide fingerprint analysis as well as theoretical calculations (docking and molecular dynamics simulation studies). The proteomic analysis of HTB/HSA photolysates shows that HTB addition takes place at the epsilon-amino groups of the Lys137, Lys199, Lys205, Lys351, Lys432, Lys525, Lys541 and Lys545 residues and involves replacement of the trifluoromethyl moiety of HTB with a new amide function. Only Lys199 is located in an internal pocket of the protein, and the remaining modified residues are placed in the external part. Docking and molecular dynamic simulation studies reveal that HTB supramolecular binding to HSA occurs in the "V-cleft" region and that the process is assisted by the presence of Glu/Asp residues in the neighborhood of the external Lys, in agreement with the experimentally observed modifications. Atopic dermatitis: an update and review of the literature
Atopic eczema/dermatitis from the aspects of immunologic background, genetics, skin barrier dysfunction, IgE receptors, and triggers of AD (including allergens, microorganisms, and autoantigens) is described. Also reviewed are diagnostic procedures, treatment modalities with topical treatment (emollients, topical corticosteroids, topical calcineurin inhibitors, wet wrap therapy, and topical antimicrobial therapy), systemic management (antimicrobials, systemic corticosteroids, cyclosporine A, azathioprine, antihistamines), and phototherapy. Primary and secondary prevention are discussed and the role of the different cell receptors and their up-and down-regulation in this setting are emphasized
Overview of Approaches and Future Challenges for Development of Music Recommendation Socio-Technical Systems
This paper analyses the position of music recommendations in the wider context of music information behavior research and proposes five music information behavior dimensions: socio-cognitive information experience, information seeking, information retrieval, recommendations, and content consumption and analysis. It examines different approaches in the development of music recommendation systems (RS) which are applicable to all types of web information resources. These approaches are classified as content-based, collaborative, demographic, knowledge-based, meta-data-based, emotion-based and context-based, while the hybrid approach to RS development combines two or more approaches into one. Also, recent developments in the domain of music recommendations are discussed in detail. Finally, challenges and opportunities for collaboration between the scientific and the commercial communities on the development of new RS models are being explored.</jats:p
