    Dietary flavonoid intake and risk of incident depression in midlife and older women

    Background: The impact of dietary flavonoid intakes on risk of depression is unclear. Objective: We prospectively examined associations between estimated habitual intakes of dietary flavonoids and depression risk. Design: We followed 82,643 women without a previous history of depression at baseline from the Nurses’ Health Study [(NHS) aged 53–80 y] and the Nurses’ Health Study II [(NHSII) aged 36–55 y]. Intakes of total flavonoids and subclasses (flavonols, flavones, flavanones, anthocyanins, flavan-3-ols, polymeric flavonoids, and proanthocyanidins) were calculated from validated food-frequency questionnaires collected every 2–4 y. Depression was defined as physician- or clinician-diagnosed depression or antidepressant use and was self-reported in response to periodic questionnaires. Cox proportional hazards models were performed to examine associations. Results: A total of 10,752 incident depression cases occurred during a 10-y follow-up. Inverse associations between flavonol, flavone, and flavanone intakes and depression risk were observed. Pooled multivariable-adjusted HRs (95% CIs) were 0.93 (0.88, 0.99), 0.92 (0.86, 0.98), and 0.90 (0.85, 0.96) when comparing the highest (quintile 5) with the lowest (quintile 1) quintiles, respectively, with evidence of linear trends across quintiles (P-trend = 0.0004–0.08). In flavonoid-rich food-based analyses, the HR was 0.82 (95% CI: 0.74, 0.91) among participants who consumed ≄2 servings citrus fruit or juices/d compared with <1 serving/wk. In the NHS only, total flavonoids, polymers, and proanthocyanidin intakes showed significant (9–12%) lower depression risks. In analyses among late-life NHS participants (aged ≄65 y at baseline or during follow-up), for whom we were able to incorporate depressive symptoms into the outcome definition, higher intakes of all flavonoid subclasses except for flavan-3-ols were associated with significantly lower depression risk; flavones and proanthocyanidins showed the strongest associations (HR for both: 0.83; 95% CI: 0.77, 0.90). Conclusions: Higher flavonoid intakes may be associated with lower depression risk, particularly among older women. Further studies are needed to confirm these associations

    Mediterranean Jellyfish Venoms: A Review on Scyphomedusae

    The production of natural toxins is an interesting aspect, which characterizes the physiology and the ecology of a number of marine species that use them for defence/offence purposes. Cnidarians are of particular concern from this point of view; their venoms are contained in specialized structures–the nematocysts–which, after mechanical or chemical stimulation, inject the venom in the prey or in the attacker. Cnidarian stinging is a serious health problem for humans in the zones where extremely venomous jellyfish or anemones are common, such as in temperate and tropical oceanic waters and particularly along several Pacific coasts, and severe cases of envenomation, including also lethal cases mainly induced by cubomedusae, were reported. On the contrary, in the Mediterranean region the problem of jellyfish stings is quite modest, even though they can have anyhow an impact on public health and be of importance from the ecological and economic point of view owing to the implications on ecosystems and on some human activities such as tourism, bathing and fishing. This paper reviews the knowledge about the various aspects related to the occurrence and the stinging of the Mediterranean scyphozoan jellyfish as well as the activity of their venoms

    Autoantibodies against type I IFNs in patients with critical influenza pneumonia

    In an international cohort of 279 patients with hypoxemic influenza pneumonia, we identified 13 patients (4.6%) with autoantibodies neutralizing IFN-alpha and/or -omega, which were previously reported to underlie 15% cases of life-threatening COVID-19 pneumonia and one third of severe adverse reactions to live-attenuated yellow fever vaccine. Autoantibodies neutralizing type I interferons (IFNs) can underlie critical COVID-19 pneumonia and yellow fever vaccine disease. We report here on 13 patients harboring autoantibodies neutralizing IFN-alpha 2 alone (five patients) or with IFN-omega (eight patients) from a cohort of 279 patients (4.7%) aged 6-73 yr with critical influenza pneumonia. Nine and four patients had antibodies neutralizing high and low concentrations, respectively, of IFN-alpha 2, and six and two patients had antibodies neutralizing high and low concentrations, respectively, of IFN-omega. The patients' autoantibodies increased influenza A virus replication in both A549 cells and reconstituted human airway epithelia. The prevalence of these antibodies was significantly higher than that in the general population for patients 70 yr of age (3.1 vs. 4.4%, P = 0.68). The risk of critical influenza was highest in patients with antibodies neutralizing high concentrations of both IFN-alpha 2 and IFN-omega (OR = 11.7, P = 1.3 x 10(-5)), especially those <70 yr old (OR = 139.9, P = 3.1 x 10(-10)). We also identified 10 patients in additional influenza patient cohorts. Autoantibodies neutralizing type I IFNs account for similar to 5% of cases of life-threatening influenza pneumonia in patients <70 yr old

    Development of Guidelines for Support Structure Design and Placement in Metal Additive Manufacturing

    Support structures used in metal additive manufacturing (AM) have traditionally been used to overcome process limitations. A new approach explored in this study used novel design and placement of support structures to reduce part deformation. First, a case study was conducted with a simple production part at a major OEM. Changing the support structures used in the print reduced the average deformation by up to 21% and the maximum deformation by up to 24%. Once this opportunity for customized support structure design was established, interviews with AM engineers were used to identify the most common challenge features that would benefit from support design: bottom surface, hole, roof, and overhang. Supports were designed for these features using a mechanical analysis, print simulation, and test print. The advanced support strategies showed multiple levels of success, with the bottom surface showing up to a 6% reduction in maximum deformation, the overhang experiencing up to a 11.21% reduction in average deformation, the hole reducing average deformation by up to 24.59%, and the roof showing up to a 32.10% reduction in average deformation. Guidelines with a geometry definition, support design envelope, and example support solution were created for each of the four challenge geometries and used to support a crank plate containing the four geometries. In print simulations of the crank plate, the varied advanced supports reduced maximum part deformation by 14.6% compared to the constant baselines supports.     FOPPA: an open database of French public procurement award notices from 2010–2020

    Abstract Public Procurement refers to governments’ purchasing activities of goods, services, and construction of public works. In the European Union (EU), it is an essential sector, corresponding to 15% of the GDP. EU public procurement generates large amounts of data, because award notices related to contracts exceeding a predefined threshold must be published on the TED (EU’s official journal). Under the framework of the DeCoMaP project, which aims at leveraging such data in order to predict fraud in public procurement, we constitute the FOPPA (French Open Public Procurement Award notices) database. It contains the description of 1,380,965 lots obtained from the TED, covering the 2010–2020 period for France. We detect a number of substantial issues in these data, and propose a set of automated and semi-automated methods to solve them and produce a usable database. It can be leveraged to study public procurement in an academic setting, but also to facilitate the monitoring of public policies, and to improve the quality of the data offered to buyers and suppliers

    FOPPA: A database of French Open Public Procurement Award notices

    This document describes the constitution of the FOPPA database (French Open Public Procurement Award notices), which relies on a subset of the TED database that contains French public procurement notices published from 2010 to 2020. These data have a number of issues, the most serious being that the unique IDs of most involved agents are missing. We explain how we solve these issues to produce a usable database.     Diagnostic significance of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) titres: a retrospective case-control study

    Objectives To investigate the reliability of elevated titres of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) and to identify a cut-off titre in discriminating between ANCA-associated vasculitides (AAV) and its mimickers.Methods This retrospective observational single-centre study included patients over 18 years with positive myeloperoxidase (MPO)-ANCA and/or proteinase 3 (PR3)-ANCA immunoassays over an 8-year period (January 2010 to December 2018), via their electronic medical files. Patients were classified according to the 2022 ACR/EULAR criteria and alternative diagnoses categorised either as non-AAV autoimmune disorders (ANCA-AI) or disorders without autoimmune features (ANCA-O). Findings from the AAV group were compared with those of ANCA-AI and ANCA-O groups and followed by a multivariate logistic stepwise regression analysis of features associated with AAV.Results 288 ANCA-positive patients of which 49 had AAV were altogether included. There was no difference between patients between the ANCA-AI (n=99) and the ANCA-O (n=140) groups. The AUC for titres discriminating AAV from mimickers was 0.83 (95% CI, 0.79 to 0.87). The best threshold titre, irrespective of PR3-ANCA or MPO-ANCA, was 65 U/mL with a negative predictive value of 0.98 (95% CI, 0.95 to 1.00). On multivariate analysis, an ANCA titre ≄65 U/mL was independently associated with AAV with an OR of 34.21 (95% CI 9.08 to 129.81; p&lt;0.001). Other risk factors were: pulmonary fibrosis (OR, 11.55 (95% CI, 3.87 to 34.47, p&lt;0.001)), typical ear nose and throat involvement (OR, 5.67 (95% CI, 1.64 to 19.67); p=0.006) and proteinuria (OR, 6.56 (95% CI, 2.56 to 16.81; p&lt;0.001)).Conclusion High PR3/MPO-ANCA titres can help to discriminate between AAV and their mimickers in patients presenting with small-calibre vasculitides, with a threshold titre of 65 U/mL and above
