Experimental observation of fractional topological phases with photonic qudits
Geometrical and topological phases play a fundamental role in quantum theory.
Geometric phases have been proposed as a tool for implementing unitary gates
for quantum computation. A fractional topological phase has been recently
discovered for bipartite systems. The dimension of the Hilbert space determines
the topological phase of entangled qudits under local unitary operations. Here
we investigate fractional topological phases acquired by photonic entangled
qudits. Photon pairs prepared as spatial qudits are operated inside a Sagnac
interferometer and the two-photon interference pattern reveals the topological
phase as fringes shifts when local operations are performed. Dimensions and were tested, showing the expected theoretical values.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Perturbative Quantum (In)equivalence of Dual Models in dimensions
Various examples of target space duality transformations are investigated up
to two loop order in perturbation theory. Our results show that when using the
tree level (`naive') transformation rules the dual theories are in general {\it
inequivalent} at two loops to the original ones, (both for the Abelian and the
non Abelian duality).Comment: 11 pages, Latex, uses espcrc2.st
Role of Network Topology in the Synchronization of Power Systems
We study synchronization dynamics in networks of coupled oscillators with
bimodal distribution of natural frequencies. This setup can be interpreted as a
simple model of frequency synchronization dynamics among generators and loads
working in a power network. We derive the minimum coupling strength required to
ensure global frequency synchronization. This threshold value can be
efficiently found by solving a binary optimization problem, even for large
networks. In order to validate our procedure, we compare its results with
numerical simulations on a realistic network describing the European
interconnected high-voltage electricity system, finding a very good agreement.
Our synchronization threshold can be used to test the stability of frequency
synchronization to link removals. As the threshold value changes only in very
few cases when aplied to the European realistic network, we conclude that
network is resilient in this regard. Since the threshold calculation depends on
the local connectivity, it can also be used to identify critical network
partitions acting as synchronization bottlenecks. In our stability experiments
we observe that when a link removal triggers a change in the critical
partition, its limits tend to converge to national borders. This phenomenon,
which can have important consequences to synchronization dynamics in case of
cascading failure, signals the influence of the uncomplete topological
integration of national power grids at the European scale.Comment: The final publication is available at http://www.epj.org (see

Non-perturbative effects in semi-leptonic B_c decays
We discuss the impact of the soft degrees of freedom inside the B_c meson on
its rate in the semi-leptonic decay B_c -> X l nu_l where X denotes light
hadrons below the D^0 threshold. In particular we identify contributions
involving soft hadrons which are non-vanishing in the limit of massless
leptons. These contributions become relevant for a measurement of the purely
leptonic B_c decay rate, which due to helicity suppression involves a factor
m_l^2 and thus is much smaller than the contributions involving soft hadrons.Comment: LaTeX, 22 pages, 1 figur
Effects of dimers on cooperation in the spatial prisoner's dilemma game
We investigate the evolutionary prisoner's dilemma game in structured
populations by introducing dimers, which are defined as that two players in
each dimer always hold a same strategy. We find that influences of dimers on
cooperation depend on the type of dimers and the population structure. For
those dimers in which players interact with each other, the cooperation level
increases with the number of dimers though the cooperation improvement level
depends on the type of network structures. On the other hand, the dimers, in
which there are not mutual interactions, will not do any good to the
cooperation level in a single community, but interestingly, will improve the
cooperation level in a population with two communities. We explore the
relationship between dimers and self-interactions and find that the effects of
dimers are similar to that of self-interactions. Also, we find that the dimers,
which are established over two communities in a multi-community network, act as
one type of interaction through which information between communities is
communicated by the requirement that two players in a dimer hold a same
strategy.Comment: 12 pages and 3 figure
Exact fuzzy sphere thermodynamics in matrix quantum mechanics
We study thermodynamical properties of a fuzzy sphere in matrix quantum
mechanics of the BFSS type including the Chern-Simons term. Various quantities
are calculated to all orders in perturbation theory exploiting the one-loop
saturation of the effective action in the large-N limit. The fuzzy sphere
becomes unstable at sufficiently strong coupling, and the critical point is
obtained explicitly as a function of the temperature. The whole phase diagram
is investigated by Monte Carlo simulation. Above the critical point, we obtain
perfect agreement with the all order results. In the region below the critical
point, which is not accessible by perturbation theory, we observe the Hagedorn
transition. In the high temperature limit our model is equivalent to a totally
reduced model, and the relationship to previously known results is clarified.Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, (v2) some typos correcte
Quantum equivalence of sigma models related by non Abelian Duality Transformations
Coupling constant renormalization is investigated in 2 dimensional sigma
models related by non Abelian duality transformations. In this respect it is
shown that in the one loop order of perturbation theory the duals of a one
parameter family of models, interpolating between the SU(2) principal model and
the O(3) sigma model, exhibit the same behaviour as the original models. For
the O(3) model also the two loop equivalence is investigated, and is found to
be broken just like in the already known example of the principal model.Comment: As a result of the collaboration of new authors the previously
overlooked gauge contribution is inserted into eq.(43) changing not so much
the formulae as part of the conclusion: for the models considered non Abelian
duality is OK in one loo
First results from NA60 on low mass muon pair production in In-In collisions at 158 GeV/nucleon
The NA60 experiment at the CERN SPS studies dimuon production in
proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions. The combined information from a
novel vertex telescope made of radiation-tolerant silicon pixel detectors and
from the muon spectrometer previously used in NA50 allows for a precise
measurement of the muon vertex and a much improved dimuon mass resolution. We
report on first results from the data taken for Indium-Indium collisions at 158
AGeV/nucleon in 2003, concentrating on a subsample of about 370 000 muon pairs
in the mass range GeV/. The light vector mesons and
are completely resolved, with a mass resolution of about 23 MeV/
at the . The transverse momentum spectra of the are measured over
the continuous range GeV/c; the inverse slope parameter of
the spectra is found to increase with centrality, with an average value of
MeV.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures. Plenary talk, SQM2004 conference, Cape Town,

Study of the plutino object (208996) 2003 AZ84 from stellar occultations: size, shape and topographic features
We present results derived from four stellar occultations by the plutino
object (208996) 2003~AZ, detected at January 8, 2011 (single-chord
event), February 3, 2012 (multi-chord), December 2, 2013 (single-chord) and
November 15, 2014 (multi-chord). Our observations rule out an oblate spheroid
solution for 2003~AZ's shape. Instead, assuming hydrostatic equilibrium,
we find that a Jacobi triaxial solution with semi axes ~km % axis ratios and
, can better account for all our occultation observations.
Combining these dimensions with the rotation period of the body (6.75~h) and
the amplitude of its rotation light curve, we derive a density ~g~cm a geometric albedo . A grazing chord
observed during the 2014 occultation reveals a topographic feature along
2003~AZ's limb, that can be interpreted as an abrupt chasm of width
~km and depth ~km or a smooth depression of width ~km
and depth ~km (or an intermediate feature between those two extremes)
Heavy Quarkonium Physics
This report is the result of the collaboration and research effort of the
Quarkonium Working Group over the last three years. It provides a comprehensive
overview of the state of the art in heavy-quarkonium theory and experiment,
covering quarkonium spectroscopy, decay, and production, the determination of
QCD parameters from quarkonium observables, quarkonia in media, and the effects
on quarkonia of physics beyond the Standard Model. An introduction to common
theoretical and experimental tools is included. Future opportunities for
research in quarkonium physics are also discussed.Comment: xviii + 487 pages, 260 figures. The full text is also available at
