Vitamin A affects flatfish development in a thyroid hormone signaling and metamorphic stage dependent manner
Vitamin A (VA) and retinoid derivatives are known morphogens controlling vertebrate development. Despite the research effort conducted during the last decade, the precise mechanism of how VA induces post-natal bone changes, and particularly those operating through crosstalk with the thyroid hormones (THs) remain to be fully understood. Since effects and mechanisms seem to be dose and time-dependent, flatfish are an interesting study model as they undergo a characteristic process of metamorphosis driven by THs that can be followed by external appearance. Here, we studied the effects of VA imbalance that might determine Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) skeletogenetic phenotype through development of thyroid follicles, THs homeostasis and signaling when a dietary VA excess was specifically provided during pre-, pro-or post-metamorphic stages using enriched rotifers and Artemia as carriers. The increased VA content in enriched live prey was associated to a higher VA content in fish at all developmental stages. Dietary VA content clearly affected thyroid follicle development, T3 and T4 immunoreactive staining, skeletogenesis and mineralization in a dose and time-dependent fashion. Gene expression analysis showed that VA levels modified the mRNA abundance of VA- and TH-specific nuclear receptors at specific developmental stages. Present results provide new and key knowledge to better understand how VA and TH pathways interact at tissue, cellular and nuclear level at different developmental periods in Senegalese sole, unveiling how dietary modulation might determine juvenile phenotype and physiology.Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC) of the Spanish Government [AGL2005-02478]; [SFRH/BPD/82049/2011]info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Finite size effects on measures of critical exponents in d=3 O(N) models
We study the critical properties of three-dimensional O(N) models, for
N=2,3,4. Parameterizing the leading corrections-to-scaling for the
exponent, we obtain a reliable infinite volume extrapolation, incompatible with
previous Monte Carlo values, but in agreement with -expansions. We
also measure the critical exponent related with the tensorial magnetization as

Comparison of charge modulations in LaBaCuO and YBaCuO
A charge modulation has recently been reported in (Y,Nd)BaCuO
[Ghiringhelli {\em et al.} Science 337, 821 (2013)]. Here we report Cu
edge soft x-ray scattering studies comparing the lattice modulation associated
with the charge modulation in YBaCuO with that associated with
the well known charge and spin stripe order in LaBaCuO.
We find that the correlation length in the CuO plane is isotropic in both
cases, and is \AA for LaBaCuO and \AA for YBaCuO. Assuming weak inter-planar correlations of
the charge ordering in both compounds, we conclude that the order parameters of
the lattice modulations in LaBaCuO and
YBaCuO are of the same order of magnitude.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figure
Scaling of the 3P0 strength in heavy meson strong decays
The phenomenological 3P0 decay model has been extensively applied to
calculate meson strong decays. The strength \gamma\ of the decay interaction is
regarded as a free flavor independent constant and is fitted to the data. We
calculate through the 3P0 model the total strong decay widths of the mesons
which belong to charmed, charmed-strange, hidden charm and hidden bottom
sectors. The wave function of the mesons involved in the strong decays are
given by a constituent quark model that describes well the meson phenomenology
from the light to the heavy quark sector. A global fit of the experimental data
shows that, contrarily to the usual wisdom, the \gamma\ depends on the reduced
mass of the quark-antiquark pair in the decaying meson. With this
scale-dependent strength \gamma, we are able to predict the decay width of
orbitally excited B mesons not included in the fit.Comment: 7 pages, 5 tables, 2 figure
Critical properties of the Antiferromagnetic \RP2$ model in three dimensions
We study the behavior of the antiferromagnetic RP model in . The
vacuum structure is analyzed in the critical and low temperature regions,
paying special attention to the spontaneous symmetry breaking pattern. Near the
critical point we observe a full breakdown of the O(3) symmetry of the action.
Several methods for computing critical exponents are compared. We conclude that
the most solid determination is obtained using a measure of the correlation
length. Corrections-to-scaling are parameterized, yielding a very accurate
determination of the critical coupling and a 5\% error measure of the related
exponent. This is used to estimate the systematic errors due to finite-size

Publication of RDF streams with Ztreamy
Proceedings of ESWC 2014 Satellite Events, Anissaras, Crete, Greece, May 25–29, 2014There is currently an interest in the Semantic Web community for the development of tools and techniques to process RDF streams. Implementing an effective RDF stream processing system requires to address several aspects including stream generation, querying, reasoning, etc. In this work we focus on one of them: the distribution of RDF streams through the Web. In order to address this issue, we have developed Ztreamy, a scalable middleware which allows to publish and consume RDF streams through HTTP. Estimating photometric redshifts with artificial neural networks
A new approach to estimating photometric redshifts - using Artificial Neural
Networks (ANNs) - is investigated. Unlike the standard template-fitting
photometric redshift technique, a large spectroscopically-identified training
set is required but, where one is available, ANNs produce photometric redshift
accuracies at least as good as and often better than the template-fitting
method. The Bayesian priors on the underlying redshift distribution are
automatically taken into account. Furthermore, inputs other than galaxy colours
- such as morphology, angular size and surface brightness - may be easily
incorporated, and their utility assessed.
Different ANN architectures are tested on a semi-analytic model galaxy
catalogue and the results are compared with the template-fitting method.
Finally the method is tested on a sample of ~ 20000 galaxies from the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey. The r.m.s. redshift error in the range z < 0.35 is ~ 0.021.Comment: Submitted to MNRAS, 9 pages, 9 figures, substantial improvements to
