Shear behavior of reinforced concrete deep beams strengthened with CFRP laminates

    Get PDF
Considerable research has been performed using CFRP plates bonded to normal reinforced concrete beams, the objective being to improve shear and flexural strength. However, very few tests have been performed on reinforced concrete deep beams with CFRP as shear reinforcement. The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the behavior of the deep beam in shear with various arrangements of Sika CarboDur laminates bonded to the sides. The beams were designed to be shear deficient with stirrups omitted, except at the supports and directly under the load. In total eight beams were tested, four with one-point loading and four with two-point loading. Each loading condition contained one control beam without CFRP, and three beams with the CFRP laminates attached at zero, forty-five, and ninety degrees with respect to the neutral axis. The ultimate loading capacity and behavior for each beam bonded with the CFRP laminate was observed and recorded. The mode of failure was shear in all the beams tested, which typically resulted from the delaminating between the concrete and the epoxy. The present test results show that the orientation of the CFRP about the neutral axis had a direct effect on the shear strength of the beam and its ductility. The forty-five degree alignment of CFRP plates gave the greatest increase in shear capacity and ductility, whereas the ninety-degree alignment gave the least amount

Community Empowerment Through Community-Based Tourism: The Case of Chobe Enclave Conservation Trust in Botswana

    Get PDF
Given the increased awareness of the importance of host communities and environmental responsibility in tourism, community-based tourism (CBT) has gained popularity in the tourism literature as a strategy for environmental conservation and community development. Particularly, CBT is promoted for community empowerment by tourism planners, researchers and practitioners alike. Drawing on a case study of the Chobe Enclave Conservation Trust (CECT) in Botswana, this chapter demonstrates that the adoption of CBT under the rubric of community- based natural resource management (CBNRM) may not always bring the desired outcomes. More specifically, the study demonstrates that operational, structural and cultural limits impede community participation in CBT development projects. These fi ndings suggest that limited performance of CBT and conservation endeavors may be explained by the lack of consideration and incorporation of such limits in CBRNM initiatives. Nevertheless, while CECT may be perceived as having attained limited community empowerment success, the case study offers a positive example of how the government’s approach to natural resource management is evolving. The chapter is organized into three parts. First, an overview of the discourse around CBT is presented, highlighting the importance of community empowerment in CBT. Second, drawing on the case of Botswana, CBT’s organizational structure is discussed in terms of actors, roles and interests. Finally, the outcomes and effects of CBT are highlighted

The Design of a Middle School Manual to Aid Core Teachers in the Development of Integrated Curriculum Units

    Get PDF
This project purports to design a manual for middle-school teachers to aid in the development of core-integrated curriculum units. The manual will serve as an ally to the knowledge in textbooks, technology bases, and other available printed and nonprinted library and classroom resources. It will illustrate specific ways to integrate core curriculum knowledge and activities. The manual is intended for use by school-based subject core teachers by providing a common field of knowledge on the development of integrated curriculum units for middle level grades. The manual will enable educators to develop integrated core curriculum units that utilize themes and knowledge from a variety of resources, including current textbooks and printed and nonprinted library resources. Teachers will be encouraged to tie this knowledge in to community resources and to intentionally and contextually restructure teaching and learning

THE DEBTOR’S DILEMMA: ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF ASSET RETENTION IN CONSUMER BANKRUPTCY

    Get PDF
Since 2005, the Bankruptcy Code has limited Chapter 7 debtors to two asset retention options, reaffirmation and redemption. This Note explores the impact of the modified asset retention options both on the incentives of debtors and creditors during bankruptcy proceedings and on the deals they reach in practice. While the 2005 revisions succeeded in eliminating an irksome circuit split, this Note illustrates the way in which they fostered deeper problems with asset retention. It argues that allowing ride-through – the option laid to rest in 2005 – would better achieve the bankruptcy goals of protecting debtors and creditors while promoting doctrinal uniformity

RAID Disk Arrays for High Bandwidth Applications

    Get PDF
High bandwidth applications require large amounts of data transferred to/from storage devices at extremely high data rates. Further, these applications often are 'real time' in which access to the storage device must take place on the schedule of the data source, not the storage. A good example is a satellite downlink - the volume of data is quite large and the data rates quite high (dozens of MB/sec). Further, a telemetry downlink must take place while the satellite is overhead. A storage technology which is ideally suited to these types of applications is redundant arrays of independent discs (RAID). Raid storage technology, while offering differing methodologies for a variety of applications, supports the performance and redundancy required in real-time applications. Of the various RAID levels, RAID-3 is the only one which provides high data transfer rates under all operating conditions, including after a drive failure

Teaching Landings by the Numbers: Quantifying the Visual Approach and Landing

    Get PDF
We have all heard it said that a good landing requires a good approach. But what can we do to teach our students to make good approaches? What techniques can we emphasize to ensure that the variables that affect each approach -- speed, approach angle, and runway alignment -- are controlled in such a way that the pilot arrives at the proper position and at an appropriate speed that allows a smooth transition to the touchdown attitude and contact with the runway at an acceptable point in the touchdown zone? The key to teaching students to land successfully is to consistently execute approaches that ensure that the aircraft arrives at a predetermined point from which the transition to the touchdown attitude can begin. This paper will explain one method of flying good approaches by the numbers -- numbers that will help quantify some of the variables that make the execution of the visual approach and landing such a challenge to our students. Included are several other important techniques that support and enhance the information provided

Professionalism and the Corporate Culture of Aviation Education

Those of us who are in some way affiliated with a university-based professional-pilot preparation program boast about our ability to prepare our graduates for careers as professional pilots employed by major air carriers. Some of us even talk about subjects such as crew resource management and imply that the corporate culture at any air carrier can have a significant effect on the safety and efficiency of flight operations. If this is true, then we must recognize that the corporate culture of our educational institutions has a significant effect on the professional preparation of our graduates
