    Short time-scale frequency and amplitude variations in the pulsations of an roAp star: HD 217522

    Photometric observations of HD 217522 in 1981 revealed only one pulsation frequency ν1 = 1.215 29 mHz. Subsequent observations in 1989 showed the presence of an additional frequency ν2 = 2.0174 mHz. New observations in 2008 confirm the presence of the mode with ν2 = 2.0174 mHz. Examination of the 1989 data shows amplitude modulation over a time-scale of the order of a day, much shorter than what has been observed in other rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) stars. High spectral and time resolution data obtained using the Very Large Telescope in 2008 confirm the presence of ν2 and short-term modulations in the radial velocity amplitudes of rare earth elements. This suggests growth and decay times shorter than a day, more typical of solar-like oscillations. The driving mechanism of roAp stars and the Sun are different, and the growth and decay seen in the Sun are due to stochastic nature of the driving mechanism. The driving mechanism in roAp stars usually leads to mode stability on a longer time-scale than in the Sun. We interpret the reported change in ν1 between the 1982 and 1989 data as part of the general frequency variability observed in this star on many time-scales

    CryoEM structure of the human SLC4A4 sodium-coupled acid-base transporter NBCe1.

    Na+-coupled acid-base transporters play essential roles in human biology. Their dysfunction has been linked to cancer, heart, and brain disease. High-resolution structures of mammalian Na+-coupled acid-base transporters are not available. The sodium-bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1 functions in multiple organs and its mutations cause blindness, abnormal growth and blood chemistry, migraines, and impaired cognitive function. Here, we have determined the structure of the membrane domain dimer of human NBCe1 at 3.9 Å resolution by cryo electron microscopy. Our atomic model and functional mutagenesis revealed the ion accessibility pathway and the ion coordination site, the latter containing residues involved in human disease-causing mutations. We identified a small number of residues within the ion coordination site whose modification transformed NBCe1 into an anion exchanger. Our data suggest that symporters and exchangers utilize comparable transport machinery and that subtle differences in their substrate-binding regions have very significant effects on their transport mode

    Virtual Radiologic (vRad), the largest teleradiology company in the United States, faces the difficult problem of matching more than 400 radiologists with time-varying and seasonal demand. In addition to the constraints that traditional medical facilities face, vRad is subject to supply and demand requirements that are unique to the teleradiology business environment. In this paper, we present a forecasting and capacity-planning model that more accurately assesses demand and plans system capacity to provide better service to vRad’s customers. We discuss the underlying reasons for improvement and quantify the impact on vRad’s entire system. We explain managerial insights that will help both vRad and other companies in the service sector with similar service-response requirements and demand patterns.     On Exceptional Times for generalized Fleming-Viot Processes with Mutations

    If Y\mathbf Y is a standard Fleming-Viot process with constant mutation rate (in the infinitely many sites model) then it is well known that for each t>0t>0 the measure Yt\mathbf Y_t is purely atomic with infinitely many atoms. However, Schmuland proved that there is a critical value for the mutation rate under which almost surely there are exceptional times at which Y\mathbf Y is a finite sum of weighted Dirac masses. In the present work we discuss the existence of such exceptional times for the generalized Fleming-Viot processes. In the case of Beta-Fleming-Viot processes with index α]1,2[\alpha\in\,]1,2[ we show that - irrespectively of the mutation rate and α\alpha - the number of atoms is almost surely always infinite. The proof combines a Pitman-Yor type representation with a disintegration formula, Lamperti's transformation for self-similar processes and covering results for Poisson point processes

    Different Evolutionary Stages in the Massive Star Forming Region S255 Complex

    To understand evolutionary and environmental effects during the formation of high-mass stars, we observed three regions of massive star formation at different evolutionary stages that reside in the same natal molecular cloud. Methods. The three regions S255IR, S255N and S255S were observed at 1.3 mm with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) and followup short spacing information was obtained with the IRAM 30m telescope. Near infrared (NIR) H + K-band spectra and continuum observations were taken for S255IR with VLT-SINFONI to study the different stellar populations in this region. The combination of millimeter (mm) and near infrared data allow us to characterize different stellar populations within the young forming cluster in detail. While we find multiple mm continuum sources toward all regions, their outflow, disk and chemical properties vary considerably. The most evolved source S255IR exhibits a collimated bipolar outflow visible in CO and H2 emission, the outflows from the youngest region S255S are still small and rather confined in the regions of the mm continuum peaks. Also the chemistry toward S255IR is most evolved exhibiting strong emission from complex molecules, while much fewer molecular lines are detected in S255N, and in S255S we detect only CO isotopologues and SO lines. Also, rotational structures are found toward S255N and S255IR. Furthermore, a comparison of the NIR SINFONI and mm data from S255IR clearly reveal two different (proto) stellar populations with an estimated age difference of approximately 1 Myr. A multi-wavelength spectroscopy and mapping study reveals different evolutionary phases of the star formation regions.
