    Laser-based Diagnostics for Use in Ex-situ Lithium Co-deposit Analysis

    Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and time of flight (TOF) mass spectrometry of laser-produced ions were tested for ex-situ analysis of lithium co-deposited layers produced by plasma deposition. It was found that LIBS provides an adequate way to observe and measure lithium content in thin co-deposited layers of about 1 µm thickness. TOF mass spectrometry data of the same layers was compared with LIBS. TOF mass spectrometry provided a better resolution; however, the simplicity of LIBS setup and the rate of measurement (less than one minute per measurement) makes it more attractive. Argon was observed in the co-deposited layers, indicating that it, and likely other inert gases, can remain trapped in lithium layers even after a prolonged exposure to and chemical reaction with atmospheric air

    Beryllium film deposition in cavity samples in remote areas of the JET divertor during the 2011-2012 ITER-like wall campaign

    Beryllium film deposition was studied with cavity samples in remote areas of the inner and outer JET divertor and below divertor tile 5 during the 2011–2012 campaign with the ITER-like wall. Predominantly beryllium films were formed inside the cavities with some additional carbon, the ratio Be/C was > 2. These deposited layers had high D/(Be + C) ratios of about 0.3. The formation of these films is mainly due to sticking of beryllium-containing particles with low sticking coefficients < 0.5. The observed surface loss probabilities depend on the position in the divertor. The particles responsible for film deposition originated from the location of in the divertor strike points.EURATOM 63305

It is possible to increase professional knowledge and skills to work with modern equipment of leading companies. Actuality of modernization, technical description of the stand are given. Stand consists of: mechanical manipulator parts, electrical and pneumatic drives, controllers, position sensor , control panels and computer. The block diagram of the stand, the software features of SCADA system TRACE MODE are shown, the user interface is designed as well as methods of laboratory work are given. The more detailed information as to the arm automatic mode control (setting to zero position. Cycle work ) is presented.     Investigation of deuterium trapping and release in the JET ITER-like wall divertor using TDS and TMAP

    Selected set of samples from JET ITER-Like Wall (JET-ILW) divertor tiles exposed both in 2013–2014 and 2011–2014 has been analysed using Thermal Desorption Spectrometry (TDS). The deuterium (D) amounts obtained with TDS were compared with Ion Beam Analysis (IBA) and Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) data. The highest amount of D was found on the top part of inner divertor which has regions with the thickest deposited layers. This area resides deep in the scrape-off layer. Changes in plasma configurations between the first (2011–2012) and the second (2013–2014) JET-ILW campaign altered the material migration towards the inner and the outer divertor corner increasing the amount of deposition in the shadowed areas of the divertor base tiles. D retention on the outer divertor tiles is clearly smaller than on the inner divertor tiles. Experimental TDS spectra for samples from the top part of inner divertor and from the outer strike point region were modelled using TMAP program. Experimental deuterium profiles obtained with SIMS have been used and the detrapping and the activation energies have been adjusted. Analysis of the results of the TMAP simulations enabled to determine the nature of traps in different samples.Peer reviewe

    The work presented draws on new analysis of components removed following the second JET ITER-like wall campaign 2013–14 concentrating on the upper inner divertor, inner and outer divertor corners, lifetime issues relating to tungsten coatings on JET carbon fibre composite divertor tiles and dust/particulate generation. The results show that the upper inner divertor remains the region of highest deposition in the JET-ILW. Variations in plasma configurations between the first and second campaign have altered material migration to the corners of the inner and outer divertor.     A Statistical Analysis of the SOT-Hinode Observations of Solar Spicules and their Wave-like Behavior

    We consider a first important parameter of spicules as observed above the solar visible limb: their apparent diameter as a function of the height above the limb which determines their aspect ratio and leads to the discussion of their magnetic origin using the flux tube approximation. We found that indeed spicules show a whole range of diameters, including unresolved "interacting spicules" (I-S), depending of the definition chosen to characterize this ubiquitous dynamical phenomenon occurring into a low coronal surrounding. 1-D Fourier amplitude spectra (AS) made at different heights above the limb are shown for the first time. A definite signature in the 0.18 to 0.25 Mm range exists, corresponding to the occurrence of the newly discovered type II spicules and, even more impressively, large Fourier amplitudes are observed in the 0.3 to the 1.2 Mm range of diameters and spacing, in rough agreement with what historical works were reporting. Additionally, some statistically significant behavior, based on AS computed for different heights above the limb, is discussed. "Time slice or x-t diagrams" revealing the dynamical behavior of spicules are also analyzed. They show that most of spicules have multiple structures (similarly to the doublet spicules) and they show impressive transverse periodic fluctuations which were interpreted as upward kink or Alfven waves. Evidence of the helical motion in spicules is now well evidenced, the typical periods of the apparent oscillation being around 120 sec. A fine analysis of the time-slice diagram as a function of the effective heights shows an interesting new feature near the 2 Mm height. We speculate on the interpretation of this feature as being a result of the dynamical specificities of the spicule helical motion as seen in these unprecedented high resolution HCaII line emission time series.Comment: 21 pages, 8 figurs, 1 tabl

    The Sunrise Mission

    The first science flight of the balloon-borne \Sunrise telescope took place in June 2009 from ESRANGE (near Kiruna/Sweden) to Somerset Island in northern Canada. We describe the scientific aims and mission concept of the project and give an overview and a description of the various hardware components: the 1-m main telescope with its postfocus science instruments (the UV filter imager SuFI and the imaging vector magnetograph IMaX) and support instruments (image stabilizing and light distribution system ISLiD and correlating wavefront sensor CWS), the optomechanical support structure and the instrument mounting concept, the gondola structure and the power, pointing, and telemetry systems, and the general electronics architecture. We also explain the optimization of the structural and thermal design of the complete payload. The preparations for the science flight are described, including AIV and ground calibration of the instruments. The course of events during the science flight is outlined, up to the recovery activities. Finally, the in-flight performance of the instrumentation is briefly summarized.Comment: 35 pages, 17 figure

    Monitoring of breast cancer progression via aptamer-based detection of circulating tumor cells in clinical blood samples

    Introduction: Breast cancer (BC) diagnostics lack noninvasive methods and procedures for screening and monitoring disease dynamics. Admitted CellSearch® is used for fluid biopsy and capture of circulating tumor cells of only epithelial origin. Here we describe an RNA aptamer (MDA231) for detecting BC cells in clinical samples, including blood. The MDA231 aptamer was originally selected against triple-negative breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 using cell-SELEX.Methods: The aptamer structure in solution was predicted using mFold program and molecular dynamic simulations. The affinity and specificity of the evolved aptamers were evaluated by flow cytometry and laser scanning microscopy on clinical tissues from breast cancer patients. CTCs were isolated form the patients’ blood using the developed method of aptamer-based magnetic separation. Breast cancer origin of CTCs was confirmed by cytological, RT-qPCR and Immunocytochemical analyses.Results: MDA231 can specifically recognize breast cancer cells in surgically resected tissues from patients with different molecular subtypes: triple-negative, Luminal A, and Luminal B, but not in benign tumors, lung cancer, glial tumor and healthy epithelial from lungs and breast. This RNA aptamer can identify cancer cells in complex cellular environments, including tumor biopsies (e.g., tumor tissues vs. margins) and clinical blood samples (e.g., circulating tumor cells). Breast cancer origin of the aptamer-based magnetically separated CTCs has been proved by immunocytochemistry and mammaglobin mRNA expression.Discussion: We suggest a simple, minimally-invasive breast cancer diagnostic method based on non-epithelial MDA231 aptamer-specific magnetic isolation of circulating tumor cells. Isolated cells are intact and can be utilized for molecular diagnostics purposes

    Global erosion and deposition patterns in JET with the ITER-like wall

    A set of Be and W tiles removed after the first ITER-like wall campaigns (JET-ILW) from 2011 to 2012 has been analysed. The results indicate that the primary erosion site is in the main chamber (Be) as in previous carbon campaigns (JET-C). In particular the limiters tiles near the mid-plane are eroded probably during the limiter phases of discharges. W is found at low concentrations on all plasma-facing surfaces of the vessel indicating deposition via plasma transport initially from the W divertor and from main chamber W-coated tiles; there are also traces of Mo (used as an interlayer for these coatings). Deposited films in the inner divertor have a layered structure, and every layer is dominated by Be with some W and O content
