    Formal schooling influences two- but not three-dimensional naming skills

    The modulatory influence of literacy on the cognitive system of the human brain has been indicated in behavioral, neuroanatomic, and functional neuroimaging studies. In this study we explored the functional consequences of formal education and the acquisition of an alphabetic written language on two- and three-dimensional visual naming. The results show that illiterate subjects perform significantly worse on immediate naming of two-dimensional representations of common everyday objects compared to literate subjects, both in terms of accuracy and reaction times. In contrast, there was no significant difference when the subjects named the corresponding real objects. The results suggest that formal education and learning to read and to write modulate the cognitive process involved in processing two- but not three-dimensional representations of common everyday objects. Both the results of the reaction time and the error pattern analyses can be interpreted as indicating that the major influence of literacy affects the visual system or the interaction between the visual and the language systems. We suggest that the visual system in a wide sense and/or the interface between the visual and the language system are differently formatted in literate and illiterate subjects. In other words, we hypothesize that the pattern of interactions in the functional-anatomical networks subserving visual naming, that is, the interactions within and between the visual and language processing networks, differ in literate and illiterate subjects.     Approaches to the cortical analysis of auditory objects

    We describe work that addresses the cortical basis for the analysis of auditory objects using ‘generic’ sounds that do not correspond to any particular events or sources (like vowels or voices) that have semantic association. The experiments involve the manipulation of synthetic sounds to produce systematic changes of stimulus features, such as spectral envelope. Conventional analyses of normal functional imaging data demonstrate that the analysis of spectral envelope and perceived timbral change involves a network consisting of planum temporale (PT) bilaterally and the right superior temporal sulcus (STS). Further analysis of imaging data using dynamic causal modelling (DCM) and Bayesian model selection was carried out in the right hemisphere areas to determine the effective connectivity between these auditory areas. Specifically, the objective was to determine if the analysis of spectral envelope in the network is done in a serial fashion (that is from HG to PT to STS) or parallel fashion (that is PT and STS receives input from HG simultaneously). Two families of models, serial and parallel (16 in total) that represent different hypotheses about the connectivity between HG, PT and STS were selected. The models within a family differ with respect to the pathway that is modulated by the analysis of spectral envelope. After the models are identified, Bayesian model selection procedure is then used to select the ‘optimal’ model from the specified models. The data strongly support a particular serial model containing modulation of the HG to PT effective connectivity during spectral envelope variation. Parallel work in neurological subjects addresses the effect of lesions to different parts of this network. We have recently studied in detail subjects with ‘dystimbria’: an alteration in the perceived quality of auditory objects distinct from pitch or loudness change. The subjects have lesions of the normal network described above with normal perception of pitch strength but abnormal perception of the analysis of spectral envelope change

    Clinicopathological and prognostic significance of RECQL5 helicase expression in breast cancers

    RECQL5 is a member of the RecQ family of DNA helicases and has key roles in homologous recombination, base excision repair, replication and transcription. The clinicopathological significance of RECQL5 expression in breast cancer is unknown. In the current study we have evaluated RECQL5 mRNA expression in 1977 breast cancers, and RECQL5 protein level in 1902 breast cancers [Nottingham Tenovus series (n=1650) and ER- cohort (n=252)]. Expression levels were correlated to aggressive phenotypes and survival outcomes. High RECQL5 mRNA expression was significantly associated with high histological grade (p=0.007), HER2 overexpression (p=0.032), ER+/HER2-/high proliferation genefu subtype, integrative molecular clusters (intClust 1and 9) and poor breast cancer specific survival (BCSS) (ps<0.0001). In sub-group analysis, high RECQL5 mRNA level remains significantly associated with poor BCSS in ER+ cohort (p<0.0001) but not in ER- cohort (p=0.116). At the protein level, in tumours with low RAD51, high RECQL5 level was significantly associated with high histological grade (p<0.0001), higher mitotic index (p=0.008), de-differentiation (p=0.025), pleomorphism (p=0.027) and poor BCSS (P=0.003). In sub-group analysis, high RECQL5/low RAD51 remains significantly associated with poor BCSS in ER+ cohort (p=0.010), but not in ER- cohort (p=0.628). In multivariate analysis, high RECQL5 mRNA and high RECQL5/low RAD51 nuclear protein co-expression independently influenced BCSS (p=0.022) in whole cohort and in the ER+ sub-group. Pre-clinically, we show that exogenous expression of RECQL5 in MCF10A cells can drive proliferation supporting an oncogenic function for RECQL5 in breast cancer. We conclude that RECQL5 is a promising biomarker in breast cancer

    Measurements of the Cosmic Ray Composition with Air Shower Experiments

    In this paper we review air shower data related to the mass composition of cosmic rays above 1015^{15} eV. After explaining the basic relations between air shower observables and the primary mass and energy of cosmic rays, we present different approaches and results of composition studies with surface detectors. Furthermore, we discuss measurements of the longitudinal development of air showers from non-imaging Cherenkov detectors and fluorescence telescopes. The interpretation of these experimental results in terms of primary mass is highly susceptible to the theoretical uncertainties of hadronic interactions in air showers. We nevertheless attempt to calculate the logarithmic mass from the data using different hadronic interaction models and to study its energy dependence from 1015^{15} to 1020^{20} eV.Comment: 21 pages, invited review accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics, Topical Issue on Cosmic Ray
