Realising consilience: How better communication between archaeologists, historians and natural scientists can transform the study of past climate change in the Mediterranean
This paper reviews the methodological and practical issues relevant to the ways in which natural scientists, historians and archaeologists may collaborate in the study of past climatic changes in the Mediterranean basin. We begin by discussing the methodologies of these three disciplines in the context of the consilience debate, that is, attempts to unify different research methodologies that address similar problems. We demonstrate that there are a number of similarities in the fundamental methodology between history, archaeology, and the natural sciences that deal with the past ("palaeoenvironmental sciences"), due to their common interest in studying societal and environmental phenomena that no longer exist. The three research traditions, for instance, employ specific narrative structures as a means of communicating research results. We thus present and compare the narratives characteristic of each discipline; in order to engage in fruitful interdisciplinary exchange, we must first understand how each deals with the societal impacts of climatic change. In the second part of the paper, we focus our discussion on the four major practical issues that hinder communication between the three disciplines. These include terminological misunderstandings, problems relevant to project design, divergences in publication cultures, and differing views on the impact of research. Among other recommendations, we suggest that scholars from the three disciplines should aim to create a joint publication culture, which should also appeal to a wider public, both inside and outside of academia
Application of new methods of environment analysis and assessment in landscape audits : case studies of urban areas like Czestochowa, Poland
Following the 2000 European Landscape Convention, a new act strengthening landscape protection
instruments has been in force since 2015. It sets forth legal aspects of landscape shaping (Dziennik Ustaw 2015, poz.
774) and introduces landscape audits at the province level. A landscape audit consists in identification and
characterization of selected landscapes, assessment of their value, selection of so-called priority landscapes and
identification of threats for preservation of their value. An audit complies with GIS standards. Analyses use source
materials, i.e. digital maps of physical-geographical mesoregions, current topographic maps of digital resources of
cartographic databases, latest orthophotomaps and DTMs, maps of potential vegetation, geobotanic regionalization,
historic-cultural regionalization and natural landscape types, documentation of historical and cultural values and
related complementary resources. A special new methodology (Solon et al. 2014), developed for auditing, was tested
in 2015 in an urban area (Myga-Piatek et al. 2015). Landscapes are characterized by determining their analytic
(natural and cultural) and synthetic features, with particular focus on the stage of delimitation and identification of
landscape units in urban areas. Czestochowa was selected as a case study due to its large natural (karst landscapes of
the Czestochowa Upland, numerous forests, nature reserves) and cultural (Saint Maryâs Sanctuary, unique urban
architecture) potential. Czestochowa is also a city of former iron ore and mineral resources exploitation, still active
industry, dynamic urban sprawl within former farming areas, and dynamically growing tourism. Landscape
delimitation and identification distinguished 75 landscape units basing on uniform landscape background (uniform
cover and use of the land). Landscape assessment used a new assessment method for anthropogenic transformation of
landscape â the indicator describing the correlation between the mean shape index (MSI) and the Shannon diversity
index (SHDI) (Pukowiec-Kurda, Sobala 2016). Particular threats and planning suggestions, useful in development of
urban areas, were presented for selected priority landscapes
A comparison of ZnMgSSe and MgS wide bandgap semiconductors used as barriers: Growth, structure and luminescence properties
a b s t r a c t The wide bandgap alloy Zn 0.2 Mg 0.8 S 0.64 Se 0.36 has recently been grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and been shown to be oxidation and acid resistant. This makes it attractive either as a replacement or adjunct to MgS in II-VI multilayers. In this paper we compare the structural and optical properties of MBE grown multilayer structures containing Zn 0.2 Mg 0.8 S 0.64 Se 0.36 to those grown with the quaternary alloy replaced by MgS. Cross-sectional high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray interference spectra of ZnSe/Zn 0. This has allowed us to demonstrate the use of the quaternary alloy, which resists oxidation in place of MgS in multilayer structures
Dissemination of extensively drug-resistant NDM-producing Providencia stuartii in Europe linked to patients transferred from Ukraine, March 2022 to March 2023
BackgroundThe war in Ukraine led to migration of Ukrainian people. Early 2022, several European national surveillance systems detected multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria related to Ukrainian patients.AimTo investigate the genomic epidemiology of New Delhi metallo-ÎČ-lactamase (NDM)-producing Providencia stuartii from Ukrainian patients among European countries.MethodsWhole-genome sequencing of 66 isolates sampled in 2022-2023 in 10 European countries enabled whole-genome multilocus sequence typing (wgMLST), identification of resistance genes, replicons, and plasmid reconstructions. Five blaNDM-1-carrying-P. stuartii isolates underwent antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST). Transferability to Escherichia coli of a blaNDM-1-carrying plasmid from a patient strain was assessed. Epidemiological characteristics of patients with NDM-producing P. stuartii were gathered by questionnaire.ResultswgMLST of the 66 isolates revealed two genetic clusters unrelated to Ukraine and three linked to Ukrainian patients. Of these three, two comprised blaNDM-1-carrying-P. stuartii and the third blaNDM-5-carrying-P. stuartii. The blaNDM-1 clusters (PstCluster-001, nâ=â22 isolates; PstCluster-002, nâ=â8 isolates) comprised strains from seven and four countries, respectively. The blaNDM-5 cluster (PstCluster-003) included 13 isolates from six countries. PstCluster-001 and PstCluster-002 isolates carried an MDR plasmid harbouring blaNDM-1,blaOXA-10, blaCMY-16, rmtC and armA, which was transferrable in vitro and, for some Ukrainian patients, shared by other Enterobacterales. AST revealed PstCluster-001 isolates to be extensively drug-resistant (XDR), but susceptible to cefiderocol and aztreonam-avibactam. Patients with data on age (nâ=â41) were 19-74âyears old; of 49 with information on sex, 38 were male.ConclusionXDR P. stuartii were introduced into European countries, requiring increased awareness and precautions when treating patients from conflict-affected areas.</p
Palaeoecological data indicates land-use changes across Europe linked to spatial heterogeneity in mortality during the Black Death pandemic
Historical accounts of the mortality outcomes of the Black Death plague pandemic are variable across Europe, with much higher death tolls suggested in some areas than others. Here the authors use a 'big data palaeoecology' approach to show that land use change following the pandemic was spatially variable across Europe, confirming heterogeneous responses with empirical data.The Black Death (1347-1352 ce) is the most renowned pandemic in human history, believed by many to have killed half of Europe's population. However, despite advances in ancient DNA research that conclusively identified the pandemic's causative agent (bacterium Yersinia pestis), our knowledge of the Black Death remains limited, based primarily on qualitative remarks in medieval written sources available for some areas of Western Europe. Here, we remedy this situation by applying a pioneering new approach, 'big data palaeoecology', which, starting from palynological data, evaluates the scale of the Black Death's mortality on a regional scale across Europe. We collected pollen data on landscape change from 261 radiocarbon-dated coring sites (lakes and wetlands) located across 19 modern-day European countries. We used two independent methods of analysis to evaluate whether the changes we see in the landscape at the time of the Black Death agree with the hypothesis that a large portion of the population, upwards of half, died within a few years in the 21 historical regions we studied. While we can confirm that the Black Death had a devastating impact in some regions, we found that it had negligible or no impact in others. These inter-regional differences in the Black Death's mortality across Europe demonstrate the significance of cultural, ecological, economic, societal and climatic factors that mediated the dissemination and impact of the disease. The complex interplay of these factors, along with the historical ecology of plague, should be a focus of future research on historical pandemics

Happiness around the world: A combined etic-emic approach across 63 countries
What does it mean to be happy? The vast majority of cross-cultural studies on happiness have employed a Western-origin, or "WEIRD" measure of happiness that conceptualizes it as a self-centered (or "independent"), high-arousal emotion. However, research from Eastern cultures, particularly Japan, conceptualizes happiness as including an interpersonal aspect emphasizing harmony and connectedness to others. Following a combined emicetic approach (Cheung, van de Vijver & Leong, 2011), we assessed the cross-cultural applicability of a measure of independent happiness developed in the US (Subjective Happiness Scale; Lyubomirsky & Lepper, 1999) and a measure of interdependent happiness developed in Japan (Interdependent Happiness Scale; Hitokoto & Uchida, 2015), with data from 63 countries representing 7 sociocultural regions. Results indicate that the schema of independent happiness was more coherent in more WEIRD countries. In contrast, the coherence of interdependent happiness was unrelated to a country's "WEIRD-ness." Reliabilities of both happiness measures were lowest in African and Middle Eastern countries, suggesting these two conceptualizations of happiness may not be globally comprehensive. Overall, while the two measures had many similar correlates and properties, the self-focused concept of independent happiness is "WEIRD-er" than interdependent happiness, suggesting cross-cultural researchers should attend to both conceptualizations
