    No full text
This project seeks to uncover how the urban real estate development industry might transform, and how to best shape its change to better benefit people and communities. The investigation considers Canadian cities, with a focus on Toronto. The project first uncovers the system of urban real estate development by examining how these cities grew over the past century. An analysis of the system’s actors is performed, with deeper inquiry into the business models of organizations that build space. To explore how the future of the industry might unfold, four future scenarios were created using the system analysis and findings from a horizon scan. A holistic assessment framework was created to evaluate the scenarios. From the results, common themes were identified, along with risks, opportunities and final recommendations. These findings highlight how different capital structures and organizational models can influence urban residents, as well as the potential implications of new technology, changes in capital structures, and innovations in architecture and construction

Reconceptualizing Self-Advocacy and Accessibility Labour in Post-Secondary Education for Blind and Partially Sighted Learners: A Participatory Framework

    Get PDF
The prevailing institutional expectation that blind and partially sighted students in post-secondary education will need to repeatedly self-advocate to obtain equitable and timely access to course learning materials is fatiguing, stressful, and othering. The time and resources that students devote to self-advocacy represents unrecognized labour that is not typically expected of non-disabled peers. This unrecompensed accessibility labour and its consequences are central to the rationale for the participatory framework proposed in this paper, recognizing that equitable access depends, in part, on mitigating the requirement that students engage in accessibility labour to realize their right to an inclusive post-secondary education. Dyads of blind and partially sighted accessibility professionals and course instructors will work through an iterative process to upgrade instructors’ workflows for creating and curating accessible learning materials. An anticipated outcome of this facilitation process is that learning materials assigned by participating instructors will meet an increasing proportion of students’ access requirements, and as a result, progressively mitigate the accessibility labour required to gain equitable access to course content

    Get PDF
A review of different agile methods and frameworks provides the context to evaluate scaled agile transformations. The financial sector in Canada is highly regulated, protected and considered to be among the most highly developed in the world for regulatory frameworks and oversight. (Engert, Fung, Nott, & Selody) The decision to adopt agile ways of working and transform into a responsive innovative organization focused on business agility is underway in the Canadian banking sector. The question is “to what extent does the organizational culture impact the successful implementation of agile practices in large-scale enterprises”. The research focuses on a literary review of agile frameworks, scaled agile use cases in financial services and the relationship between organizational culture and the effectiveness of agile transformations. The findings point out opportunities for future research to expand understanding of scaled agile standard blueprints for implementation and clear measurements for success

    Get PDF
This research explores the intersection of high-performance sports and the evolving landscape of mental wellbeing technologies, situated within the context of shifting paradigms regarding wellbeing within the sporting realm. Primary research was conducted through digital interviews to understand the perceptions and attitudes surrounding mental wellbeing in sports and how the emergence and adoption of technologies contribute to this discourse. The acquired insights, derived from both primary and secondary research sources, were subsequently synthesized and organized using Curry and Hodgson's (2008) Three Horizons tool. This futures analysis framework was employed to explore the current state of mental wellbeing and technology integration in high-performance sports, an initial vision of the future as imagined by key stakeholders, the necessary near-term changes to materialize this desired future, strategic recommendations to propel the field forward, and an overview of select technologies that can be harnessed to bolster elite athlete mental wellbeing. This study centers its attention on technologies that encompass two important domains in elite sports: mental health and the development of mental skills

Component Constellations: Future Perspectives on Design Systems

    Get PDF
During a time of rapid technological and economic change, shifting user preferences and heightened expectations, design systems stand as foundational tools for organizations committed to swiftly developing unified and seamless digital products and services at scale. These systems, which encapsulate a set of design standards, modular components, and design patterns, form a cohesive framework for delivering consistent user-centric applications, while promoting collaboration among product teams. This research project employs strategic foresight methods to uncover promising transformations within design systems over the next seven years. The project will start by analyzing design system elements, processes, and stakeholders to understand their interdependencies and pinpoint possible directions for future development. It will then investigate the implications of recent emerging trends that could shape design systems of the future, exploring the impact of advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Extended Reality (XR) on the creation of digital products powered by design systems. The research concludes by presenting strategic recommendations for design system professionals to optimize the effectiveness of future design systems, ensuring their sustained innovation and relevance

Black Foliage: The preservation process of botanicals in the human-nature experience.

    Get PDF
Reflecting on my Jamaican ethnicity, Black Foliage proposes an embodied knowledge that calls on black bodies to remember where we came from, and how to transform plant materials from those territories into new forms. Black Foliage asks black bodies to view and “see themselves in nature” and to explore those materials that make us, shape us, and recognize us in return. This research is a celebration of blackness and creates spaces that are rooted in the black gaze. Hogarth states, “These objects do not aim to solve questions of the colonial project. They, instead, bear material witnesses to how a diasporic material can reimagine the world beyond accepted, official multicultural narratives”. Black Foliage recognizes who we are through the Indigenous plant materials and the roles they play in our respective culture(s)

THE BUSINESS OF ART: HOW CAPITALIST BUSINESSES CAN DO MORE TO SUPPORT CONTEMPORARY VISUAL ARTISTS

    Get PDF
Art can serve as a catalyst for introspection, dialogue, and solace amid turbulent times. In today's world, art's role is pivotal. However, the supply of art remains constrained, as aspiring artists face hurdles to creating impactful art. Career success in art largely hinges on a select few businesses within the Contemporary Art ecosystem, acting as gatekeepers. These entities, rooted in capitalist values, shape the ecosystem. While capitalism does not inherently stifle artists, the relative power of these actors within the ecosystem impedes many artists in growing their careers. Given art's societal benefits, the control these businesses exert warrants public scrutiny. This report researches the historical underpinnings of the most prominent businesses operating in today’s ecosystem, provides an overview of each business’ underlying business model, and puts forward a series of new business models that aim to serve contemporary visual artists in new, or unaddressed, ways. The ultimate purpose of this report is to provide a foundation of knowledge, insight, and ideas for entrepreneurs or businesses interested in serving emerging, contemporary visual artists
