The Correlation Between Galaxy HI Linewidths and K' Luminosities
The relationship between galaxy luminosities and rotation rates is studied
with total luminosities in the K' band. Extinction problems are essentially
eliminated at this band centered at 2.1 micron. A template luminosity-linewidth
relation is derived based on 65 galaxies drawn from two magnitude-limited
cluster samples. The zero-point is determined using 4 galaxies with accurately
known distances. The calibration is applied to give the distance to the Pisces
Cluster (60 Mpc) at a redshift in the CMB frame of 4771 km/s. The resultant
value of the Hubble Constant is 81 km/s/Mpc. The largest sources of uncertainty
arises from the small number of zero-point calibrators at this time at K' and

Polarization dependence of four-wave mixing in a degenerate two-level system
Nearly degenerate four-wave mixing (NDFWM) within a closed degenerate
two-level atomic transition is theoretically and experimentally examined. Using
the model presented by A. Lezama et al [Phys. Rev. A 61, 013801 (2000)] the
NDFWM spectra corresponding to different pump and probe polarization cases are
calculated and discussed. The calculated spectra are compared to the
observation of NDFWM within the transition of

GenomeRing: alignment visualization based on SuperGenome coordinates
Motivation: The number of completely sequenced genomes is continuously rising, allowing for comparative analyses of genomic variation. Such analyses are often based on whole-genome alignments to elucidate structural differences arising from insertions, deletions or from rearrangement events. Computational tools that can visualize genome alignments in a meaningful manner are needed to help researchers gain new insights into the underlying data. Such visualizations typically are either realized in a linear fashion as in genome browsers or by using a circular approach, where relationships between genomic regions are indicated by arcs. Both methods allow for the integration of additional information such as experimental data or annotations. However, providing a visualization that still allows for a quick and comprehensive interpretation of all important genomic variations together with various supplemental data, which may be highly heterogeneous, remains a challenge
Contribution of respiratory pathogens to influenza-like illness consultations
Influenza-like illnesses (ILIs) are caused by several respiratory pathogens. These pathogens show weak to strong seasonal activity implying seasonality in ILI consultations. In this paper, the contribution of pathogens to seasonality of ILI consultations was statistically modelled. Virological count data were first smoothed using modulation models for seasonal time series. Second, Poisson regression was used regressing ILI consultation counts on the smoothed time series. Using ratios of the estimated regression parameters, relative measures of the underreporting of pathogens were obtained. Influenza viruses A and B, parainfluenza virus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) significantly contributed to explain the seasonal variation in ILI consultations. We also found that RSV was the least and influenza virus A is the most underreported pathogen in Belgian laboratory surveillance. The proposed methods and results are helpful in interpreting the data of clinical and laboratory surveillance, which are the essential parts of influenza surveillance
System Test of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer in the H8 Beam at the CERN SPS
An extensive system test of the ATLAS muon spectrometer has been performed in
the H8 beam line at the CERN SPS during the last four years. This spectrometer
will use pressurized Monitored Drift Tube (MDT) chambers and Cathode Strip
Chambers (CSC) for precision tracking, Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) for
triggering in the barrel and Thin Gap Chambers (TGCs) for triggering in the
end-cap region. The test set-up emulates one projective tower of the barrel
(six MDT chambers and six RPCs) and one end-cap octant (six MDT chambers, A CSC
and three TGCs). The barrel and end-cap stands have also been equipped with
optical alignment systems, aiming at a relative positioning of the precision
chambers in each tower to 30-40 micrometers. In addition to the performance of
the detectors and the alignment scheme, many other systems aspects of the ATLAS
muon spectrometer have been tested and validated with this setup, such as the
mechanical detector integration and installation, the detector control system,
the data acquisition, high level trigger software and off-line event
reconstruction. Measurements with muon energies ranging from 20 to 300 GeV have
allowed measuring the trigger and tracking performance of this set-up, in a
configuration very similar to the final spectrometer. A special bunched muon
beam with 25 ns bunch spacing, emulating the LHC bunch structure, has been used
to study the timing resolution and bunch identification performance of the
trigger chambers. The ATLAS first-level trigger chain has been operated with
muon trigger signals for the first time
A Search for Jet Handedness in Hadronic Decays
We have searched for signatures of polarization in hadronic jets from decays using the ``jet handedness'' method. The polar angle
asymmetry induced by the high SLC electron-beam polarization was used to
separate quark jets from antiquark jets, expected to be left- and
right-polarized, respectively. We find no evidence for jet handedness in our
global sample or in a sample of light quark jets and we set upper limits at the
95% C.L. of 0.063 and 0.099 respectively on the magnitude of the analyzing
power of the method proposed by Efremov {\it et al.}Comment: Revtex, 8 pages, 2 figure
Search for the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) in gamma gamma collisions
Data taken with the ALEPH detector at LEP1 have been used to search for gamma
gamma production of the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) via their
decay to pi+pi-. No signal is observed and upper limits to the product of gamma
gamma width and pi+pi- branching ratio of the f0(1500) and the fJ(1710) have
been measured to be Gamma_(gamma gamma -> f0(1500)). BR(f0(1500)->pi+pi-) <
0.31 keV and Gamma_(gamma gamma -> fJ(1710)). BR(fJ(1710)->pi+pi-) < 0.55 keV
at 95% confidence level.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Search for supersymmetry with a dominant R-parity violating LQDbar couplings in e+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 130GeV to 172 GeV
A search for pair-production of supersymmetric particles under the assumption
that R-parity is violated via a dominant LQDbar coupling has been performed
using the data collected by ALEPH at centre-of-mass energies of 130-172 GeV.
The observed candidate events in the data are in agreement with the Standard
Model expectation. This result is translated into lower limits on the masses of
charginos, neutralinos, sleptons, sneutrinos and squarks. For instance, for
m_0=500 GeV/c^2 and tan(beta)=sqrt(2) charginos with masses smaller than 81
GeV/c^2 and neutralinos with masses smaller than 29 GeV/c^2 are excluded at the
95% confidence level for any generation structure of the LQDbar coupling.Comment: 32 pages, 30 figure
