High Mercury Concentrations of European Perch (Perca fluviatilis) in Boreal Headwater Lakes with Variable History of Acidification and Recovery
High dissolved organic carbon and low pH are often associated with elevated mercury content of fish in boreal lakes, but less is known about the fish mercury dynamics in lakes recovering from acidification stress. We measured total mercury concentration (THg) in muscle of European perch (Perca fluviatilis) and evaluated the overall correlation with environmental and growth variables in 24 boreal headwater lakes in the 2010s. We found negative correlations of length-corrected perch THg with lake pH and perch growth, but no correlation with dissolved organic carbon. The main emphasis in the present study was focused to a subset of ten lakes in southern Finland with known perch THg during severe acidification in the 1980-1990s. The comparison of perch THg concentrations in the 2010s with values determined in the 1980-1990s showed a sharp increase in most acidic lakes where the perch populations suffered from severe acid stress in the 1980s. This increase was attributed to growth condensation caused by sharp decrease in perch growth during recovery of reproduction capacity and the consequent increases in population densities of perch. Our results highlight the importance of perch growth rate and population density for understanding the variability of fish Hg in boreal headwater lakes, where recovery from acidification can lead to higher mercury concentration of fish in certain cases.Peer reviewe
Kotitarveviljely ja hyötyeläimet Suomessa ja kotitarvetuotantoon motivoivat tekijät
Kasvava kiinnostus ruuan alkuperään sekä tuotantoon on näkynyt viime vuosina julkisessa keskustelussa. Kotitarvetuotannosta on kuitenkin olemassa huonosti tietoa.

Spatial and temporal trends of mercury in freshwater fish in Fennoscandia (1965-2015)
Source at http://hdl.handle.net/11250/2467116Mercury (Hg) emissions to the atmosphere cause elevated Hg levels in fish, even in many remote regions of the world. Here we present an extensive database of more than 50 000 measurements of Hg in fish, including 2 775 individual water bodies in Fennoscandia (Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russian part of Kola Peninsula) sampled between 1965 and 2015. The data have been analysed for spatial patterns and temporal trends, on raw and weight-adjusted data. The database presents a useful reference for assessment of impacts of environmental policy on Hg in freshwater fish (i.e. Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution and The Minamata Convention on Mercury)
Improved environmental status : 50 years of declining fish mercury levels in boreal and subarctic Fennoscandia
Temporally (1965–2015) and spatially (55°–70°N) extensive records of total mercury (Hg) in freshwater fish showed consistent declines in boreal and subarctic Fennoscandia. The database contains 54 560 fish entries (n: pike > perch ≫ brown trout > roach ≈ Arctic charr) from 3132 lakes across Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Russian Murmansk area. 74% of the lakes did not meet the 0.5 ppm limit to protect human health. However, after 2000 only 25% of the lakes exceeded this level, indicating improved environmental status. In lakes where local pollution sources were identified, pike and perch Hg concentrations were significantly higher between 1965 and 1990 compared to values after 1995, likely an effect of implemented reduction measures. In lakes where Hg originated from long-range transboundary air pollution (LRTAP), consistent Hg declines (3–7‰ per year) were found for perch and pike in both boreal and subarctic Fennoscandia, suggesting common environmental controls. Hg in perch and pike in LRTAP lakes showed minimal declines with latitude, suggesting that drivers affected by temperature, such as growth dilution, counteracted Hg loading and food web exposure. We recommend that future fish Hg monitoring sampling design should include repeated sampling and collection of pollution history, water chemistry, fish age, and stable isotopes to enable evaluation of emission reduction policies
Regional assessment of the current extent of acidification of surface waters in Europe and North America
The current status of surface water acidification related to air pollution in Europe and North America has been assessed using country reports, monitoring data, critical loads and exceedance data, acid sensitivity and deposition maps, and data reported under the European Commission’s Water Framework Directive (WFD). Acidification is still observed in many countries, but the extent and severity vary. Maps of acid sensitivity and deposition suggest that surface water acidification is present in regions and countries for which no data or reports were delivered for the current assessment. Existing national monitoring varies in the ability to assess the spatial extent of acidification and the recovery responses of acidified sites. The monitoring requirements under the European Union’s National Emission Ceilings Directive are expected to reverse the recent decline in the number of monitoring sites observed in some countries. The information reported under the WFD is currently of limited value in assessing the extent of acidification of surface waters in Europe. Chemical recovery in response to reductions in acid deposition can be slow, and biological recovery can lag severely behind. Despite large and effective efforts across Europe and North America to reduce surface water acidification, air pollution still constitutes a threat to freshwater ecosystems

Fine-scale temporal characterization of trends in soil water dissolved organic carbon and potential drivers
Long-term monitoring of surface water quality has shown increasing concentrations of Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) across a large part of the Northern Hemisphere. Several drivers have been implicated including climate change, land management change, nitrogen and sulphur deposition and CO2 enrichment. Analysis of stream water data, supported by evidence from laboratory studies, indicates that an effect of declining sulphur deposition on catchment soil chemistry is likely to be the primary mechanism, but there are relatively few long term soil water chemistry records in the UK with which to investigate this, and other, hypotheses directly. In this paper, we assess temporal relationships between soil solution chemistry and parameters that have been argued to regulate DOC production and, using a unique set of co-located measurements of weather and bulk deposition and soil solution chemistry provided by the UK Environmental Change Network and the Intensive Forest Monitoring Level II Network . We used statistical non-linear trend analysis to investigate these relationships at 5 forested and 4 non-forested sites from 1993 to 2011. Most trends in soil solution DOC concentration were found to be non-linear. Significant increases in DOC occurred mostly prior to 2005. The magnitude and sign of the trends was associated qualitatively with changes in acid deposition, the presence/absence of a forest canopy, soil depth and soil properties. The strongest increases in DOC were seen in acidic forest soils and were most clearly linked to declining anthropogenic acid deposition, while DOC trends at some sites with westerly locations appeared to have been influenced by shorter-term hydrological variation. The results indicate that widespread DOC increases in surface waters observed elsewhere, are most likely dominated by enhanced mobilization of DOC in surficial organic horizons, rather than changes in the soil water chemistry of deeper horizons. While trends in DOC concentrations in surface horizons have flattened out in recent years, further increases may be expected as soil chemistry continues to adjust to declining inputs of acidity

Modelling impacts of atmospheric deposition and temperature on long-term DOC trends
It is increasingly recognised that widespread and substantial increases in Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in remote surface, and soil, waters in recent decades are linked to declining acid deposition. Effects of rising pH and declining ionic strength on DOC solubility have been proposed as potential dominant mechanisms. However, since DOC in these systems is derived mainly from recently-fixed carbon, and since organic matter decomposition rates are considered sensitive to temperature, uncertainty persists over the extent to which other drivers that could influence DOC production. Such potential drivers include fertilization by nitrogen (N) and global warming. We therefore ran the dynamic soil chemistry model MADOC for a range of UK soils, for which time series data are available, to consider the likely relative importance of decreased deposition of sulphate and chloride, accumulation of reactive N, and higher temperatures, on soil DOC production in different soils. Modelled patterns of DOC change generally agreed favourably with measurements collated over 10-20 years, but differed markedly between sites. While the acidifying effect of sulphur deposition appeared to be the predominant control on the observed soil water DOC trends in all the soils considered other than a blanket peat, the model suggested that over the long term, the effects of nitrogen deposition on N-limited soils may have been sufficient to raise the “acid recovery DOC baseline” significantly. In contrast, reductions in non-marine chloride deposition and effects of long term warming appeared to have been relatively unimportant. The suggestion that future DOC concentrations might exceed preindustrial levels as a consequence of nitrogen pollution has important implications for drinking water catchment management and the setting and pursuit of appropriate restoration targets, but findings still require validation from reliable centennial-scale proxy records, such as those being developed using palaeolimnological techniques
Assessing ecological resilience to human induced environmental change in shallow lakes
Sudden unpredictable changes in ecosystems are an increasing source of concern because of
their inherent unpredictability and the difficulties involved in restoration. Our understanding
of the changes that occur across different trophic levels and the form of this change is lacking.
This is especially true of large shallow lakes, where characteristics such as fetch and depth
are close to theoretical boundary values for hysteretic behaviour. The development of
reliable indicators capable of predicting these changes has been the focus of much research
in recent years. The success of these early warning indicators (EWIs) has so far been mixed.
There remain many unknowns about how they perform under a wide variety of conditions
and parameters. Future climate change is predicted to have a wide range of impacts through
the interaction of combined pressures, making the understanding of EWIs and the in-lake
processes that occur during regime shifts imperative. Loch Leven, Scotland, UK, is a large
shallow lake with a history of eutrophication, research and management and as such is an
ideal study site to better understand resilience and regime shifts under a range of interacting
stressors.
The objectives of this research are to: (1) analyse long term data to identify the occurrence
of common tipping points within the chemical (water column nutrient concentrations) and
biological (macrophytes, phytoplankton, zooplankton) components of the loch, then test
these tipping points using five statistical early warning indicators (EWIs) across multiple
rolling window sizes; and (2) quantify the changes in lake ecology using a before/after
analysis and testing for non-linearity, combined with modelling using the aquatic ecosystem
process model PCLake to determine the level of resilience following a regime shift during
recovery from eutrophication; (3) using PCLake, examine the sensitivity of Loch Leven to
regime shifts in the face of predicted environmental change (e.g. climate change, nutrient
pollution).
Statistical analysis identified tipping points across all trophic levels included, from physical
and chemical variables through to apex predators. The success of EWIs in predicting the
tipping points was highly dependent on the number of EWIs used, with window size having
a smaller impact. The 45% window size had the highest overall accuracy across all EWIs but
only detected 16.5% more tipping points than the window size with the lowest overall
accuracy. Differences between individual EWI performance and usage of them as a group
was substantial with a 29.7% increase between the two. In both individual and group use of
EWIs, false positives (early warning without a tipping point) were more common than true
positives (tipping point preceded by EWI), creating significant doubts about their reliability
as management tools.
Significant change was seen across multiple variables and trophic levels in the before/after
analysis following sudden recovery from eutrophication, with most variables also showing
evidence of non-linear change. Modelling of responses to nutrient loading for chlorophyll,
zooplankton and macrophytes, under states from before and after the shift, indicate
hysteresis and thus the presence of feedback mechanisms. The modelling of responses to
nutrient loading and predicted climate change in temperature and precipitation
demonstrated that increases in temperature and decreases in summer precipitation
individually had large impacts on chlorophyll and zooplankton at medium to high phosphorus
(P) loads. However, modelling of the combined effects of these changes resulted in the
highest lake chlorophyll concentrations of all tested scenarios. At low P loads higher
temperatures and increased winter precipitation had the greatest impact on system
resilience with a lower Critical Nutrient Load (CNL). The difference between chlorophyll and
zooplankton as opposed to macrophytes was in the presence of a lower CNL for the increased
winter precipitation-only scenarios which was not seen in the macrophytes. This highlights
the potential role of high winter inputs potentially loaded with particulate matter in reducing
resilience at lower P loads.
This research has highlighted the vulnerability and low resilience of Loch Leven to
environmental change. The presence of multiple tipping points and high levels of EWI activity
show a high level of flexibility in the system. Coupled with the occurrence of widespread
trophic change during a sudden recovery and a small level of hysteresis and high levels of
sensitivity to climate change, the low levels of resilience become clear. The impact of lake-specific
characteristics such as moderate depth, large fetch and a heterogeneous bed
morphology is particularly evident in the limitations on macrophyte cover and the reliance
on zooplankton to determine the hysteresis offset (amount of phosphorus (P) loading
between the two CNL). The presence of these characteristics can be used to identify other
lakes vulnerable to change. Improving the predictive capabilities of resilience indicators such
as EWIs, and better understanding of the ecological changes that occur during non-linear
change in response to recovery and climate change, can help target relevant ecosystem
components for preventative management. These actions may become necessary under
even the most conservative estimates of environmental change
