    International nifedipine trial on anti-atherosclerotic therapy (INTACT) - methodologic implications and results of a coronary angiographic follow-up study using computer-assisted film analysis

    Animal experiments demonstrated a significant suppressive effect of various calcium channel blockers on the formation of atherosclerotic lesions. Therefore, a prospective, placebo-controlled, randomized, double blind multicenter study was performed to investigate the inhibitory influence of the calcium channel blocker nifedipine (80 mg/day) on the progression of coronary artery disease in man. Study endpoints were changes of coronary morphology documented by coronary angiography with particular respect to the formation of new coronary stenoses. In 348 out of 425 patients included in the study, coronary angiograms were repeated after three years. The angiograms were standardized by induction of a maximal coronary vasodilation with high doses of nitrates and by using absolutely identical angiographic projections. Quantitative analysis of coronary cineangiograms was performed with the computer-assisted contour detection system CAAS. Parameters were mean and minimal diameter of all segments and minimal stenosis diameter, percent diameter stenosis, length and plaque area of all stenoses. Continuous intake of study medication was registered in 282 patients, 134 on nifedipine and 148 patients on placebo. In these patients, a total of 3808 coronary segments with 893 stenoses (≥ 20% diameter reduction in at least one angiographic projection) were compared on the baseline and follow-up cineangiograms. The changes in all angiographic parameters analyzed averaged over all patients by considering all angiographic projections analyzed, indicated significant progression of the disease (p < 0.006). The average changes in all parameters were even about three times more profound, when in the individual patients only the respective projections indicating the maximal changes were considered for the calculation (p < 0.001). However, with neither of these two analysis modes, the differences in progression between the treatment groups were statistically significant. In the follow-up angiograms, a total of 196 new coronary lesions (185 stenoses, 11 occlusions) were found at previously normal arterial sites. In patients on nifedipine, an average of only 0.58 new lesions per patient were detected versus 0,80 lesions per patient on placebo (-27%; p=0.031). INTACT is the first prospective angiographic trial on the progression of coronary artery disease using computer-assisted quantitative coronary angiography in such a high number of patients.     Why social networks are different from other types of networks

    We argue that social networks differ from most other types of networks, including technological and biological networks, in two important ways. First, they have non-trivial clustering or network transitivity, and second, they show positive correlations, also called assortative mixing, between the degrees of adjacent vertices. Social networks are often divided into groups or communities, and it has recently been suggested that this division could account for the observed clustering. We demonstrate that group structure in networks can also account for degree correlations. We show using a simple model that we should expect assortative mixing in such networks whenever there is variation in the sizes of the groups and that the predicted level of assortative mixing compares well with that observed in real-world networks.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure

    Aims CADASIL, the most prevalent hereditary cerebral small vessel disease, is caused by cysteine-altering NOTCH3 variants (NOTCH3(cys)) leading to vascular NOTCH3 protein aggregation. It has recently been shown that variants located in one of NOTCH3 protein epidermal growth-factor like repeat (EGFr) domains 1-6, are associated with a more severe phenotype than variants located in one of the EGFr domains 7-34. The underlying mechanism for this genotype-phenotype correlation is unknown. The aim of this study was to analyse whether NOTCH3(cys) variant position is associated with NOTCH3 protein aggregation load. Methods We quantified vascular NOTCH3 aggregation in skin biopsies (n = 25) and brain tissue (n = 7) of CADASIL patients with a NOTCH3(cys) EGFr 1-6 variant or a EGFr 7-34 variant, using NOTCH3 immunohistochemistry (NOTCH3 score) and ultrastructural analysis of granular osmiophilic material (GOM count). Disease severity was assessed by neuroimaging (lacune count and white matter hyperintensity volume) and disability (modified Rankin scale). Results Patients with NOTCH3(cys) EGFr 7-34 variants had lower NOTCH3 scores (P = 1.3 center dot 10(-5)) and lower GOM counts (P = 8.2 center dot 10(-5)) than patients with NOTCH3(cys) EGFr 1-6 variants in skin vessels. A similar trend was observed in brain vasculature. In the EGFr 7-34 group, NOTCH3 aggregation levels were associated with lacune count (P = 0.03) and white matter hyperintensity volume (P = 0.02), but not with disability. Conclusions CADASIL patients with an EGFr 7-34 variant have significantly less vascular NOTCH3 aggregation than patients with an EGFr 1-6 variant.     Entangled-Photon Generation from Parametric Down-Conversion in Media with Inhomogeneous Nonlinearity

    We develop and experimentally verify a theory of Type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in media with inhomogeneous distributions of second-order nonlinearity. As a special case, we explore interference effects from SPDC generated in a cascade of two bulk crystals separated by an air gap. The polarization quantum-interference pattern is found to vary strongly with the spacing between the two crystals. This is found to be a cooperative effect due to two mechanisms: the chromatic dispersion of the medium separating the crystals and spatiotemporal effects which arise from the inclusion of transverse wave vectors. These effects provide two concomitant avenues for controlling the quantum state generated in SPDC. We expect these results to be of interest for the development of quantum technologies and the generation of SPDC in periodically varying nonlinear materials.Comment: submitted to Physical Review

    How quick was marine recovery after the end-Triassic mass extinction and what role did anoxia play?

    Oxygen restricted conditions were widespread in European shelf seas after the end-Triassic mass extinction event and they are reported to have hindered the recovery of marine benthos. Here we reconstruct the redox history of the Early Jurassic Blue Lias Formation of southwest Britain using pyrite framboid size analysis and compare this with the recovery of bivalves based on field and museum collections. Results suggest widespread dysoxia punctuated by periods of anoxia in the region, with the latter developing frequently in deeper water settings. Despite these harsh conditions, initial benthic recovery occurred rapidly in the British Jurassic, especially in shallowest settings, and shows no relationship with the intensity of dysoxia. A stable diversity was reached by the first recognised ammonite zone after the end-Triassic mass extinction. This contrasts with the deeper-water, more oxygen-poor sections where the diversity increase was still continuing in the earliest Sinemurian Stage, considerably longer than previously reported. Similar recovery rates are seen amongst other groups (brachiopods and ammonites). Oxygen-poor conditions have been suggested to delay recovery after the Permo-Triassic mass extinction, but this is not the case after the end-Triassic crisis. We suggest that this was because the European dysoxia was only a regional phenomenon and there were plenty of well-ventilated regions available to allow an untrammelled bounce back

    Measurements of long-range near-side angular correlations in sNN=5\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}=5TeV proton-lead collisions in the forward region

    Two-particle angular correlations are studied in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of sNN=5\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}=5TeV, collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on data recorded in two beam configurations, in which either the direction of the proton or that of the lead ion is analysed. The correlations are measured in the laboratory system as a function of relative pseudorapidity, Δη\Delta\eta, and relative azimuthal angle, Δϕ\Delta\phi, for events in different classes of event activity and for different bins of particle transverse momentum. In high-activity events a long-range correlation on the near side, Δϕ0\Delta\phi \approx 0, is observed in the pseudorapidity range 2.0<η<4.92.0<\eta<4.9. This measurement of long-range correlations on the near side in proton-lead collisions extends previous observations into the forward region up to η=4.9\eta=4.9. The correlation increases with growing event activity and is found to be more pronounced in the direction of the lead beam.     Evidence for the strangeness-changing weak decay ΞbΛb0π\Xi_b^-\to\Lambda_b^0\pi^-

    Using a pppp collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0~fb1^{-1}, collected by the LHCb detector, we present the first search for the strangeness-changing weak decay ΞbΛb0π\Xi_b^-\to\Lambda_b^0\pi^-. No bb hadron decay of this type has been seen before. A signal for this decay, corresponding to a significance of 3.2 standard deviations, is reported. The relative rate is measured to be fΞbfΛb0B(ΞbΛb0π)=(5.7±1.80.9+0.8)×104{{f_{\Xi_b^-}}\over{f_{\Lambda_b^0}}}{\cal{B}}(\Xi_b^-\to\Lambda_b^0\pi^-) = (5.7\pm1.8^{+0.8}_{-0.9})\times10^{-4}, where fΞbf_{\Xi_b^-} and fΛb0f_{\Lambda_b^0} are the bΞbb\to\Xi_b^- and bΛb0b\to\Lambda_b^0 fragmentation fractions, and B(ΞbΛb0π){\cal{B}}(\Xi_b^-\to\Lambda_b^0\pi^-) is the branching fraction.     BB flavour tagging using charm decays at the LHCb experiment

    An algorithm is described for tagging the flavour content at production of neutral BB mesons in the LHCb experiment. The algorithm exploits the correlation of the flavour of a BB meson with the charge of a reconstructed secondary charm hadron from the decay of the other bb hadron produced in the proton-proton collision. Charm hadron candidates are identified in a number of fully or partially reconstructed Cabibbo-favoured decay modes. The algorithm is calibrated on the self-tagged decay modes B+J/ψK+B^+ \to J/\psi \, K^+ and B0J/ψK0B^0 \to J/\psi \, K^{*0} using 3.0fb13.0\mathrm{\,fb}^{-1} of data collected by the LHCb experiment at pppp centre-of-mass energies of 7TeV7\mathrm{\,TeV} and 8TeV8\mathrm{\,TeV}.
