Congenital bipartite lunate presenting as a misdiagnosed lunate fracture: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>A rare case of congenital bipartite lunate in a child is reported. Carpal variants are very uncommon as independent entities, with only three previous reports of this condition in the English literature.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>An 11-year-old Caucasian boy presented with pain in the left wrist after a fall. Radiographs in the emergency department demonstrated a lunate that was divided into palmar and dorsal parts, causing a misdiagnosis of fractured lunate. Magnetic resonance imaging was then used to differentiate between the two diagnoses.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Very few cases of bipartite lunate have been reported in the literature, and unless awareness is raised about congenital anomalies such as this variant, confusion may arise.</p
101 Eclipsing Quadruple Star Candidates Discovered in TESS Full Frame Images
We present our second catalog of quadruple star candidates, containing 101
systems discovered in TESS Full-Frame Image data. The targets were initially
detected as eclipsing binary stars with the help of supervised machine learning
methods applied to sectors Sectors 1 through 54. A dedicated team of citizen
scientists subsequently identified through visual inspection two sets of
eclipses following two different periods. All 101 systems presented here pass
comprehensive photocenter motion tests confirming that both sets of eclipses
originate from the target star. Some of the systems exhibit prominent eclipse
time variations suggesting dynamical interactions between the two component
binary stars. One target is an eclipsing quintuple candidate with a (2+1)+2
hierarchical configuration, such that the (2+1) subsystem produces eclipses on
the triple orbit as well. Another has recently been confirmed as the second
shortest period quadruple reported to date. This catalog provides ephemerides,
eclipse depths and durations, sample statistics, and highlights potentially

A multi-site campaign to measure solar-like oscillations in Procyon. II. Mode frequencies
We have analyzed data from a multi-site campaign to observe oscillations in
the F5 star Procyon. The data consist of high-precision velocities that we
obtained over more than three weeks with eleven telescopes. A new method for
adjusting the data weights allows us to suppress the sidelobes in the power
spectrum. Stacking the power spectrum in a so-called echelle diagram reveals
two clear ridges that we identify with even and odd values of the angular
degree (l=0 and 2, and l=1 and 3, respectively). We interpret a strong, narrow
peak at 446 muHz that lies close to the l=1 ridge as a mode with mixed
character. We show that the frequencies of the ridge centroids and their
separations are useful diagnostics for asteroseismology. In particular,
variations in the large separation appear to indicate a glitch in the
sound-speed profile at an acoustic depth of about 1000 s. We list frequencies
for 55 modes extracted from the data spanning 20 radial orders, a range
comparable to the best solar data, which will provide valuable constraints for
theoretical models. A preliminary comparison with published models shows that
the offset between observed and calculated frequencies for the radial modes is
very different for Procyon than for the Sun and other cool stars. We find the
mean lifetime of the modes in Procyon to be 1.29 +0.55/-0.49 days, which is
significantly shorter than the 2-4 days seen in the Sun.Comment: accepted for publication in Ap

The Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment: Exploring Fundamental Symmetries of the Universe
The preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early Universe, the
dynamics of the supernova bursts that produced the heavy elements necessary for
life and whether protons eventually decay --- these mysteries at the forefront
of particle physics and astrophysics are key to understanding the early
evolution of our Universe, its current state and its eventual fate. The
Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE) represents an extensively developed
plan for a world-class experiment dedicated to addressing these questions. LBNE
is conceived around three central components: (1) a new, high-intensity
neutrino source generated from a megawatt-class proton accelerator at Fermi
National Accelerator Laboratory, (2) a near neutrino detector just downstream
of the source, and (3) a massive liquid argon time-projection chamber deployed
as a far detector deep underground at the Sanford Underground Research
Facility. This facility, located at the site of the former Homestake Mine in
Lead, South Dakota, is approximately 1,300 km from the neutrino source at
Fermilab -- a distance (baseline) that delivers optimal sensitivity to neutrino
charge-parity symmetry violation and mass ordering effects. This ambitious yet
cost-effective design incorporates scalability and flexibility and can
accommodate a variety of upgrades and contributions. With its exceptional
combination of experimental configuration, technical capabilities, and
potential for transformative discoveries, LBNE promises to be a vital facility
for the field of particle physics worldwide, providing physicists from around
the globe with opportunities to collaborate in a twenty to thirty year program
of exciting science. In this document we provide a comprehensive overview of
LBNE's scientific objectives, its place in the landscape of neutrino physics
worldwide, the technologies it will incorporate and the capabilities it will

New Directions in the Development of Population Estimates in the United States?
The advent of a continuously updated Master Area File (MAF) following the 2000 census represents an information resource that can be tapped for purposes of developing timely, cost-effective, and precise population estimates for even the smallest of geographical units (e.g., census blocks). We argue that the MAF can be enhanced (EMAF) for these purposes. In support of our argument we describe a set of activities needed to develop EMAF, each of which is well within the current capabilities of the U.S. Census Bureau and discuss various costs and benefits of each. We also describe how EMAF would provide population estimates containing a wide range of demographic (e.g., age, race, and sex) and socio-economic characteristics (e.g., educational attainment, income, and employment). As such, it could largely negate and eliminate the need for many of the traditional demographic methods of population estimation and possibly reduce the number of sample surveys. We identify important challenges that must be surmounted in order to realize EMAF and make suggestions for doing so. We conclude by noting that the idea of the EMAF could be of interest to other countries with MAF files and strong administrative records systems that, like the United States, are facing the challenge of producing good population information in the face of increasing census costs
Modern American populism: Analyzing the economics behind the Silent Majority, the Tea Party and Trumpism
This article researches populism, more specifically, Modern American Populism (MAP), constructed of white, rural, and economically oppressed reactionarianism, which was borne out of the political upheaval of the 1960’s Civil Rights movement. The research looks to explain the causes of populism and what leads voters to support populist movements and politicians. The research focuses on economic anxiety as the main cause but also examines an alternative theory of racial resentment. In an effort to answer the question, what causes
populist movements and motivations, I apply a research approach that utilizes qualitative and quantitative methods. There is an examination of literature that defines populism, its causes and a detailed discussion of the case studies, including the 1972 election of Richard Nixon; the Tea Party election of 2010; and the 2016 election of Donald Trump. In addition, statistical data analysis was run using American National Election Studies (ANES) surveys associated with each specific case study. These case studies were chosen because they most represent forms of populist movements in modern American history. While ample qualitative evidence suggested support for the hypothesis that economic anxiety is a necessary condition for populist voting patterns that elected Nixon, the Tea Party and Trump, the statistical data only supported the hypothesis in two cases, 2010 and 2016, with 1972 coming back inconclusive. The data also suggested that both economic anxiety and racial resentment played a role in 2010 and 2016, while having no significant effect in 1972 in either case. This suggests that further research needs to be conducted into additional populist case studies, as well as an examination into the role economic anxiety and economic crises play on racial resentment and racially motivated voting behavior
