Photometric monitoring of the doubly imaged quasar UM673: possible evidence for chromatic microlensing
We present the results of two-band CCD photometric monitoring of the
gravitationally lensed quasar Q 0142-100 (UM 673).The data, obtained at ESO-La
Silla with the 1.54 m Danish telescope in the Gunn i-band (October 1998 -
September 1999) and in the Johnson V-band (October 1998 to December 2001), were
analyzed using three different photometric methods. The light-curves obtained
with all methods show variations, with a peak-to-peak amplitude of 0.14
magnitude in . Although it was not possible to measure the time delay
between the two lensed QSO images, the brighter component displays possible
evidence for microlensing: it becomes bluer as it gets brighter, as expected

X-ray AGN in the XMM-LSS galaxy clusters: no evidence of AGN suppression
We present a study of the overdensity of X-ray selected AGN in 33 galaxy
clusters in the XMM-LSS field, up to redhift z=1.05. Previous studies have
shown that the presence of X-ray selected AGN in rich galaxy clusters is
suppressed. In the current study we investigate the occurrence of X-ray
selected AGN in low and moderate X-ray luminosity galaxy clusters. Due to the
wide contiguous XMM-LSS survey area we are able to extend the study to the
cluster outskirts. We therefore determine the projected overdensity of X-ray
point-like sources out to 6r_{500} radius. To provide robust statistical
results we also use a stacking analysis of the cluster projected overdensities.
We investigate whether the observed X-ray overdensities are to be expected by
estimating also the corresponding optical galaxy overdensities. We find a
positive X-ray projected overdensity at the first radial bin, which is however
of the same amplitude as that of optical galaxies. Therefore, no suppression of
X-ray AGN activity with respect to the field is found, implying that the
mechanisms responsible for the suppression are not so effective in lower
density environments. After a drop to roughly the background level between 2
and 3r_{500}, the X-ray overdensity exhibits a rise at larger radii,
significantly larger than the corresponding optical overdensity. Finally, using
redshift information of all optical counterparts, we derive the spatial
overdensity profile of the clusters. We find that the agreement between X-ray
and optical overdensities in the first radial bin is also suggested in the
3-dimensional analysis. However, we argue that the X-ray overdensity "bump" at
larger radial distance is probably a result of flux boosting by gravitational
lensing of background QSOs. For high redshift clusters an enhancement of X-ray

The XXL Survey: XII. Optical spectroscopy of X-ray-selected clusters and the frequency of AGN in superclusters
This article belongs to the first series of XXL publications. It presents
multifibre spectroscopic observations of three 0.55 sq.deg. fields in the XXL
Survey, which were selected on the basis of their high density of
X-ray-detected clusters. The observations were obtained with the
AutoFib2+WYFFOS (AF2) wide-field fibre spectrograph mounted on the 4.2m William
Herschel Telescope. The paper first describes the scientific rationale, the
preparation, the data reduction, and the results of the observations, and then
presents a study of active galactic nuclei (AGN) within three superclusters. We
obtained redshifts for 455 galaxies in total, 56 of which are counterparts of
X-ray point-like sources. We were able to determine the redshift of the merging
supercluster XLSSC-e, which consists of six individual clusters at z~0.43, and
we confirmed the redshift of supercluster XLSSC-d at z~0.3. More importantly,
we discovered a new supercluster, XLSSC-f, that comprises three galaxy clusters
also at z~0.3. We find a significant 2D overdensity of X-ray point-like sources
only around the supercluster XLSSC-f. This result is also supported by the
spatial (3D) analysis of XLSSC-f, where we find four AGN with compatible
spectroscopic redshifts and possibly one more with compatible photometric
redshift. In addition, we find two AGN (3D analysis) at the redshift of
XLSSC-e, but no AGN in XLSSC-d. Comparing these findings with the optical
galaxy overdensity we conclude that the total number of AGN in the area of the
three superclusters significantly exceeds the field expectations. The
difference in the AGN frequency between the three superclusters cannot be
explained by the present study because of small number statistics. Further
analysis of a larger number of superclusters within the 50 sq. deg. of the XXL
is needed before any conclusions on the effect of the supercluster environment

Structure detection in the D1 CFHTLS deep field using accurate photometric redshifts: a benchmark
We investigate structures in the D1 CFHTLS deep field in order to test the
method that will be applied to generate homogeneous samples of clusters and
groups of galaxies in order to constrain cosmology and detailed physics of
groups and clusters. Adaptive kernel technique is applied on galaxy catalogues.
This technique needs none of the usual a-priori assumptions (luminosity
function, density profile, colour of galaxies) made with other methods. Its
main drawback (decrease of efficiency with increasing background) is overcame
by the use of narrow slices in photometric redshift space. There are two main
concerns in structure detection. One is false detection and the second, the
evaluation of the selection function in particular if one wants "complete"
samples. We deal here with the first concern using random distributions. For
the second, comparison with detailed simulations is foreseen but we use here a
pragmatic approach with comparing our results to GalICS simulations to check
that our detection number is not totally at odds compared to cosmological
simulations. We use XMM-LSS survey and secured VVDS redshifts up to z~1 to
check individual detections. We show that our detection method is basically
capable to recover (in the regions in common) 100% of the C1 XMM-LSS X-ray
detections in the correct redshift range plus several other candidates.
Moreover when spectroscopic data are available, we confirm our detections, even

The XMM-LSS Survey: A well controlled X-ray cluster sample over the D1 CFHTLS area
We present the XMM-LSS cluster catalogue corresponding to the CFHTLS D1 area.
The list contains 13 spectroscopically confirmed, X-ray selected galaxy
clusters over 0.8 deg2 to a redshift of unity and so constitutes the highest
density sample of clusters to date. Cluster X-ray bolometric luminosities range
from 0.03 to 5x10^{44} erg/s. In this study, we describe our catalogue
construction procedure: from the detection of X-ray cluster candidates to the
compilation of a spectroscopically confirmed cluster sample with an explicit
selection function. The procedure further provides basic X-ray products such as
cluster temperature, flux and luminosity. We detected slightly more clusters
with a (0.5-2.0 keV) X-ray fluxes of >2x10^{-14} erg/s/cm^{-2} than we expected
based on expectations from deep ROSAT surveys. We also present the
Luminosity-Temperature relation for our 9 brightest objects possessing a
reliable temperature determination. The slope is in good agreement with the
local relation, yet compatible with a luminosity enhancement for the 0.15 < z<
0.35 objects having 1 < T < 2 keV, a population that the XMM-LSS is identifying
systematically for the first time. The present study permits the compilation of
cluster samples from XMM images whose selection biases are understood. This
allows, in addition to studies of large-scale structure, the systematic
investigation of cluster scaling law evolution, especially for low mass X-ray
groups which constitute the bulk of our observed cluster population. All

Gravitational Lensing, Dark Matter and the Optical Gravitational Lens Experiment
After briefly reviewing the history of gravitational lensing, we recall the basic principles of the theory. We then describe and use a simple optical gravitational lens experiment which has the virtue of accounting for all types of image configurations observed so far among the presently known gravitational lens systems. Finally, we briefly present the 4m International Liquid Mirror Telescope project in the context of a photometric monitoring of multiply imaged quasars
The XMM Large Scale Structure Survey: Properties and Two-Point Angular Correlations of Point-like Sources
We analyze X-ray sources detected over 4.2 pseudo-contiguous sq. deg. in the
0.5-2 keV and 2-10 keV bands down to fluxes of 2x10^{-15} and 8x10^{-15}
erg/s/cm^2 respectively, as part of the XMM Large Scale Structure Survey. The
logN-logS in both bands shows a steep slope at bright fluxes, but agrees well
with other determinations below ~2x10^{-14} erg/s/cm^2. The detected sources
resolve close to 30 per cent of the X-ray background in the 2-10 keV band. We
study the two-point angular clustering of point sources using nearest
neighbours and correlation function statistics and find a weak, positive signal
for ~1130 sources in the 0.5-2 keV band, but no correlation for ~400 sources in
the 2-10 keV band below scales of 100 arcsec. A sub-sample of ~200 faint
sources with hard X-ray count ratios, that is likely to be dominated by
obscured AGN, does show a positive signal with the data allowing for a large
scaling of the angular correlation length, but only at the ~2 (3) sigma level,
based on re-sampling (Poisson) statistics. We discuss possible implications and
emphasize the importance of wider, complete surveys in order to fully

The XMM-LSS catalogue: X-ray sources and associated optical data. Version I
Following the presentation of the XMM-LSS X-ray source detection package by
Pacaud et al., we provide the source lists for the first 5.5 surveyed square
degrees. The catalogues pertain to the [0.5-2] and [2-10] keV bands and contain
in total 3385 point-like or extended sources above a detection likelihood of 15
in either band. The agreement with deep logN-logS is excellent. The main
parameters considered are position, countrate, source extent with associated
likelihood values. A set of additional quantities such as astrometric
corrections and fluxes are further calculated while errors on the position and
countrate are deduced from simulations. We describe the construction of the
band-merged catalogue allowing rapid sub-sample selection and easy
cross-correlation with external multi-wavelength catalogues. A small optical
CFHTLS multi-band subset of objects is associated wich each source along with
an X-ray/optical overlay. We make the full X-ray images available in FITS
format. The data are available at CDS and, in a more extended form, at the

The Role of Regulated mRNA Stability in Establishing Bicoid Morphogen Gradient in Drosophila Embryonic Development
The Bicoid morphogen is amongst the earliest triggers of differential spatial pattern of gene expression and subsequent cell fate determination in the embryonic development of Drosophila. This maternally deposited morphogen is thought to diffuse in the embryo, establishing a concentration gradient which is sensed by downstream genes. In most model based analyses of this process, the translation of the bicoid mRNA is thought to take place at a fixed rate from the anterior pole of the embryo and a supply of the resulting protein at a constant rate is assumed. Is this process of morphogen generation a passive one as assumed in the modelling literature so far, or would available data support an alternate hypothesis that the stability of the mRNA is regulated by active processes? We introduce a model in which the stability of the maternal mRNA is regulated by being held constant for a length of time, followed by rapid degradation. With this more realistic model of the source, we have analysed three computational models of spatial morphogen propagation along the anterior-posterior axis: (a) passive diffusion modelled as a deterministic differential equation, (b) diffusion enhanced by a cytoplasmic flow term; and (c) diffusion modelled by stochastic simulation of the corresponding chemical reactions. Parameter estimation on these models by matching to publicly available data on spatio-temporal Bicoid profiles suggests strong support for regulated stability over either a constant supply rate or one where the maternal mRNA is permitted to degrade in a passive manner
High-precision photometry by telescope defocussing. III. The transiting planetary system WASP-2
We present high-precision photometry of three transits of the extrasolar
planetary system WASP-2, obtained by defocussing the telescope, and achieving
point-to-point scatters of between 0.42 and 0.73 mmag. These data are modelled
using the JKTEBOP code, and taking into account the light from the
recently-discovered faint star close to the system. The physical properties of
the WASP-2 system are derived using tabulated predictions from five different
sets of stellar evolutionary models, allowing both statistical and systematic
errorbars to be specified. We find the mass and radius of the planet to be M_b
= 0.847 +/- 0.038 +/- 0.024 Mjup and R_b = 1.044 +/- 0.029 +/- 0.015 Rjup. It
has a low equilibrium temperature of 1280 +/- 21 K, in agreement with a recent
finding that it does not have an atmospheric temperature inversion. The first
of our transit datasets has a scatter of only 0.42 mmag with respect to the
best-fitting light curve model, which to our knowledge is a record for
