This nonfiction essay investigates the relationship between eye contact and power in different situations. It brings up the idea that animals and humans are less different than often thought to be, and how body language is transcendent. It uses this underlying theme to investigate the author’s changing relationship with her father

Design of Passive Analog Electronic Circuits Using Hybrid Modified UMDA algorithm

    Get PDF
Hybrid evolutionary passive analog circuits synthesis method based on modified Univariate Marginal Distribution Algorithm (UMDA) and a local search algorithm is proposed in the paper. The modification of the UMDA algorithm which allows to specify the maximum number of the nodes and the maximum number of the components of the synthesized circuit is proposed. The proposed hybrid approach efficiently reduces the number of the objective function evaluations. The modified UMDA algorithm is used for synthesis of the topology and the local search algorithm is used for determination of the parameters of the components of the designed circuit. As an example the proposed method is applied to a problem of synthesis of the fractional capacitor circuit

The paper is focused on evolutionary synthesis of analog circuit realization of cube root function using proposed Graph Hybrid Estimation of Distribution Algorithm. The problem of cube root function circuit realization was adopted to demonstrate synthesis capability of the proposed method. Individuals of the population of the proposed method which represent promising topologies are encoded using graphs and hypergraphs. Hybridization with local search algorithm was used. The proposed method employs univariate probabilistic model

60 GHz Blockage Study Using Phased Arrays

The millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies offer the potential for enormous capacity wireless links. However, designing robust communication systems at these frequencies requires that we understand the channel dynamics over both time and space: mmWave signals are extremely vulnerable to blocking and the channel can thus rapidly appear and disappear with small movement of obstacles and reflectors. In rich scattering environments, different paths may experience different blocking trajectories and understanding these multi-path blocking dynamics is essential for developing and assessing beamforming and beam-tracking algorithms. This paper presents the design and experimental results of a novel measurement system which uses phased arrays to perform mmWave dynamic channel measurements. Specifically, human blockage and its effects across multiple paths are investigated with only several microseconds between successive measurements. From these measurements we develop a modeling technique which uses low-rank tensor factorization to separate the available paths so that their joint statistics can be understood.Comment: To appear in the Proceedings of the 51st Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems, and Computers, 201

Evolutionary Synthesis of Fractional Capacitor Using Simulated Annealing Method

    Get PDF
Synthesis of fractional capacitor using classical analog circuit synthesis method was described in [6]. The work presented in this paper is focused on synthesis of the same problem by means of evolutionary method simulated annealing. Based on given desired characteristic function as input impedance or transfer function, the proposed method is able to synthesize topology and values of the components of the desired analog circuit. Comparison of the results given in [6] and results obtained by the proposed method will be given and discussed

Multi-Resolution Imaging and Spectra of Extended Sources

I introduce a straightforward technique for the filtering of extended astronomical images into components of different spatial scales. For a positive original image, each component is positive definite, and the sum of all components equals the original image. In this way, the components are each individually suitable for flux measurements and broadband spectra calculations. I present an illustration of this technique on the radio galaxy Cygnus~A.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, proceedings from 1999 'Life Cycles of Radio Galaxies' workshop at STScI in Baltimore, M

Corpus specificity in LSA and Word2vec: the role of out-of-domain documents

Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) and Word2vec are some of the most widely used word embeddings. Despite the popularity of these techniques, the precise mechanisms by which they acquire new semantic relations between words remain unclear. In the present article we investigate whether LSA and Word2vec capacity to identify relevant semantic dimensions increases with size of corpus. One intuitive hypothesis is that the capacity to identify relevant dimensions should increase as the amount of data increases. However, if corpus size grow in topics which are not specific to the domain of interest, signal to noise ratio may weaken. Here we set to examine and distinguish these alternative hypothesis. To investigate the effect of corpus specificity and size in word-embeddings we study two ways for progressive elimination of documents: the elimination of random documents vs. the elimination of documents unrelated to a specific task. We show that Word2vec can take advantage of all the documents, obtaining its best performance when it is trained with the whole corpus. On the contrary, the specialization (removal of out-of-domain documents) of the training corpus, accompanied by a decrease of dimensionality, can increase LSA word-representation quality while speeding up the processing time. Furthermore, we show that the specialization without the decrease in LSA dimensionality can produce a strong performance reduction in specific tasks. From a cognitive-modeling point of view, we point out that LSA's word-knowledge acquisitions may not be efficiently exploiting higher-order co-occurrences and global relations, whereas Word2vec does
