Cultural diversity at the top: Does it increase innovation and firm performance?
International audienceThe article focuses on cultural diversity and whether it has economic value. Though it is undisputed that cultural diversity within a country increases entrepreneurial behaviour the question that remains is whether this heightened entrepreneurial activity results in greater economic achievements. The article reports on a study that was carried out within the London area that presented an ideal setting given that London is a "super-diverse" city with intense economic activity. The results showed that ethnic diversity in the team of owners and partners of firms was indeed associated with greater innovativeness. This was in line with the view that diversity brings a variety of perspectives, skills and ways of thinking that in turn are translated into greater novelty in products or services and ways of performing tasks. On the other hand, however, ethnic diversity at the top did not translate into success at bringing innovations to the market, neither to revenue growth. Neither did the idea that diversity would be especially beneficial for innovation in knowledge-intensive industries find support. Finally, the data suggested that immigrants become entrepreneurs by choice rather than due to lack of better alternatives. The findings of the study raise the serious question of why the greater innovativeness that diversity brings does not generally translate into market and economic success, which opens new avenues for future research.L'article est consacré à la diversité culturelle, et de quelle façon elle revêt une valeur économique. Bien qu'il n'est pas contesté que la diversité culturelle au sein d'un pays favorise le comportement entrepreneurial, la question qui demeure est de savoir si cet accroissement de l'activité entrepreneuriale entraîne de meilleurs résultats économiques. L'article décrit une étude menée dans la région de Londres, ce qui représente un cadre idéal étant donné "l'hyper-diversité" de Londres, et son intense activité économique. Les résultats confirment que la diversité ethnique des propriétaires et des partenaires des entreprises favorise une meilleure capacité d'innovation. Cela renforce l'idée que la diversité apporte une variété de points de vue, des compétences et des façons de penser qui sont à leur tour présentes dans l'innovation des produits, des services et dans la façon d'exécuter différentes tâches. Using environmental monitoring to complement in-depth qualitative interviews in cold homes research
Cold homes contribute to twenty to forty thousand excess winter deaths each year in the UK and approximately 300,000 hospital admissions. Using fuel poverty as an identifier for those at risk does not always capture everyday exposure to cold homes due to variations in financial trade-offs and behavioural factors. Few fuel poverty studies have combined environmental measurements with qualitative data on lived experiences of fuel poverty and cold homes. This paper looks at the strengths and limitations of using a mixed method, environmental and qualitative interviewing approach. A series of six discreet studies were conducted between 2001 and 2015 using a similar methodology with a mixed methods design where in-depth interviews were conducted alongside temperature and humidity measurements. The research studies found that combining environmental monitoring with qualitative research methods allows both cross validation and triangulation of data in order to provide a richer and more insightful examination into the lives of people living in cold homes. The studies demonstrate how a combined methodological approach can help explain the choices, decisions and behaviour of households experiencing cold homes and fuel poverty. The paper concludes with recommendations for future development and implementation of the research method
Current evidence for a modulation of low back pain by human genetic variants
The manifestation of chronic back pain depends on structural, psychosocial, occupational and genetic influences. Heritability estimates for back pain range from 30% to 45%. Genetic influences are caused by genes affecting intervertebral disc degeneration or the immune response and genes involved in pain perception, signalling and psychological processing. This inter-individual variability which is partly due to genetic differences would require an individualized pain management to prevent the transition from acute to chronic back pain or improve the outcome. The genetic profile may help to define patients at high risk for chronic pain. We summarize genetic factors that (i) impact on intervertebral disc stability, namely Collagen IX, COL9A3, COL11A1, COL11A2, COL1A1, aggrecan (AGAN), cartilage intermediate layer protein, vitamin D receptor, metalloproteinsase-3 (MMP3), MMP9, and thrombospondin-2, (ii) modify inflammation, namely interleukin-1 (IL-1) locus genes and IL-6 and (iii) and pain signalling namely guanine triphosphate (GTP) cyclohydrolase 1, catechol-O-methyltransferase, μ opioid receptor (OPMR1), melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R), transient receptor potential channel A1 and fatty acid amide hydrolase and analgesic drug metabolism (cytochrome P450 [CYP]2D6, CYP2C9)
Searching for a Stochastic Background of Gravitational Waves with LIGO
The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) has performed
the fourth science run, S4, with significantly improved interferometer
sensitivities with respect to previous runs. Using data acquired during this
science run, we place a limit on the amplitude of a stochastic background of
gravitational waves. For a frequency independent spectrum, the new limit is

result in the frequency range 51-150 Hz, with a factor of 13 improvement over
the previous LIGO result. We discuss complementarity of the new result with
other constraints on a stochastic background of gravitational waves, and we
investigate implications of the new result for different models of this

Books in Arabic Script
The chapter approaches the book in Arabic script as the indispensable means for the transmission of knowledge across Eurasia and Africa, within cultures and across cultural boundaries, since the seventh century ad. The state of research can be divided into manuscript and print studies, but there is not yet a history of the book in Arabic script that captures its plurilinear development for over fourteen hundred years. The chapter explores the conceptual and practical challenges that impede the integration of the book in Arabic script into book history at large and includes an extensive reference list that reflects its diversity.
The final published version was slightly updated, and includes seven illustrations of six Qurans from the holdings of Columbia University Libraries, four manuscripts and two printed versions. Moreover, the illustrations are images of historical artifacts which are in the public domain - despite Wiley's copyright claim
Sensitivity to Gravitational Waves from Compact Binary Coalescences Achieved during LIGO's Fifth and Virgo's First Science Run
We summarize the sensitivity achieved by the LIGO and Virgo gravitational
wave detectors for compact binary coalescence (CBC) searches during LIGO's
fifth science run and Virgo's first science run. We present noise spectral
density curves for each of the four detectors that operated during these
science runs which are representative of the typical performance achieved by
the detectors for CBC searches. These spectra are intended for release to the
public as a summary of detector performance for CBC searches during these

Directional limits on persistent gravitational waves using LIGO S5 science data
The gravitational-wave (GW) sky may include nearby pointlike sources as well
as astrophysical and cosmological stochastic backgrounds. Since the relative
strength and angular distribution of the many possible sources of GWs are not
well constrained, searches for GW signals must be performed in a
model-independent way. To that end we perform two directional searches for
persistent GWs using data from the LIGO S5 science run: one optimized for
pointlike sources and one for arbitrary extended sources. The latter result is
the first of its kind. Finding no evidence to support the detection of GWs, we
present 90% confidence level (CL) upper-limit maps of GW strain power with
typical values between 2-20x10^-50 strain^2 Hz^-1 and 5-35x10^-49 strain^2
Hz^-1 sr^-1 for pointlike and extended sources respectively. The limits on
pointlike sources constitute a factor of 30 improvement over the previous best
limits. We also set 90% CL limits on the narrow-band root-mean-square GW strain
from interesting targets including Sco X-1, SN1987A and the Galactic Center as
low as ~7x10^-25 in the most sensitive frequency range near 160 Hz. These
limits are the most constraining to date and constitute a factor of 5
improvement over the previous best limits.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Upper limit map of a background of gravitational waves
We searched for an anisotropic background of gravitational waves using data
from the LIGO S4 science run and a method that is optimized for point sources.
This is appropriate if, for example, the gravitational wave background is
dominated by a small number of distinct astrophysical sources. No signal was
seen. Upper limit maps were produced assuming two different power laws for the
source strain power spectrum. For an f^-3 power law and using the 50 Hz to 1.8
kHz band the upper limits on the source strain power spectrum vary between
1.2e-48 Hz^-1 (100 Hz/f)^3 and 1.2e-47 Hz^-1 (100 Hz /f)^3, depending on the
position in the sky. Similarly, in the case of constant strain power spectrum,
the upper limits vary between 8.5e-49 Hz^-1 and 6.1e-48 Hz^-1.
As a side product a limit on an isotropic background of gravitational waves
was also obtained. All limits are at the 90% confidence level. Finally, as an
application, we focused on the direction of Sco-X1, the closest low-mass X-ray
binary. We compare the upper limit on strain amplitude obtained by this method
to expectations based on the X-ray luminosity of Sco-X1.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, 2 table
