Extreme mass ratio inspiral rates: dependence on the massive black hole mass
We study the rate at which stars spiral into a massive black hole (MBH) due
to the emission of gravitational waves (GWs), as a function of the mass M of
the MBH. In the context of our model, it is shown analytically that the rate
approximately depends on the MBH mass as M^{-1/4}. Numerical simulations
confirm this result, and show that for all MBH masses, the event rate is
highest for stellar black holes, followed by white dwarfs, and lowest for
neutron stars. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is expected to see
hundreds of these extreme mass ratio inspirals per year. Since the event rate
derived here formally diverges as M->0, the model presented here cannot hold
for MBHs of masses that are too low, and we discuss what the limitations of the

Double in situ hybridization in combination with digital image analysis: A new approach to study interphase chromosome topography
Double in situ hybridization with mercurated and biotinylated chromosome specific DNA probes in combination with digital image analysis provides a new approach to compare the distribution of homologous and nonhomologous chromosome targets within individual interphase nuclei. Here we have used two DNA probes representing tandemly repeated sequences specific for the constitutive heterochromatin of the human chromosomes 1 and 15, respectively, and studied the relative arrangements of these chromosome targets in interphase nuclei of human lymphocytes, amniotic fluid cells, and fibroblasts, cultivated in vitro. We have developed a 2D-image analysis approach which allows the rapid evaluation of large numbers of interphase nuclei. Models to test for a random versus nonrandom distribution of chromosome segments are discussed taking into account the three-dimensional origin of the evaluated 2D-distribution. In all three human diploid cell types the measurements of target-target and target-center distances in the 2D-nuclear image revealed that the labeled segments of the two chromosomes 15 were distributed both significantly closer to each other and closer to the center of the nuclear image than the labeled chromosome 1 segments. This result can be explained by the association of nucleolus organizer regions on the short arm of chromosome 15 with nucleoli located more centrally in these nuclei and does not provide evidence for a homologous association per se. In contrast, evaluation of the interphase positioning of the two chromosome 1 segments fits the random expectation in amniotic fluid and fibroblast cells, while in experiments using lymphocytes a slight excess of larger distances between these homologous targets was occasionally observed. 2D-distances between the labeled chromosome 1 and 15 segments showed a large variability in their relative positioning. In conclusion our data do not support the idea of a strict and permanent association of these homologous and nonhomologous targets in the cell types studied so far
Clostridium difficile in a farrowing pen
Clostridium difficile is an important cause of enteric disease in humans. In pigs Clostridium difficile can cause neonatal enteritis and can be isolated from faeces from diseased and healthy animals. According to recent research, isolates from humans and animals show genetic and phenotypic overlap. In The Netherlands, strains isolated from diseased piglets were indistinguishable from strains isolated from Dutch patients. These strains belonged to ribotype 078. Because pigs can either be clinical hosts and/or may be a possible reservoir more understanding of the epidemiology of Clostridium difficile among pigs is needed. The objectives of this study were to specify whether, how and when newborn piglets get infected by Clostridium difficile for the first time. With this intention, six sows, their farrowing crates and litters (71 piglets) at one farm were sampled around the day of birth of the piglets. Within 48 hours after birth, all sampled 71 piglets at the farm became positive for Clostridium difficile ribotype 078. Moreover, all sows became positive within 113 hours after birth of the piglets and the farrowing crates were intermittently positive during the sampling period. This research shows that the sow, the farrowing crate, the air and the teats of the sow are possible transmission routes of Clostridium difficile ribotype 078.This information might help to advise farmers on taking measures against Clostridium difficile infections in neonatal piglets
The origin of variability of the intermediate-mass black-hole ULX system HLX-1 in ESO 243-49
The ultra-luminous intermediate-mass black-hole system HLX-1 in the ESO
243-49 galaxy exhibits variability with a possible recurrence time of a few
hundred days. Finding the origin of this variability would constrain the still
largely unknown properties of this extraordinary object. Since it exhibits an
intensity-hardness behavior characteristic of black-hole X-ray transients, we
have analyzed the variability of HLX-1 in the framework of the disk instability
model that explains outbursts of such systems. We find that the long-term
variability of HLX-1 is unlikely to be explained by a model in which outbursts
are triggered by thermal-viscous instabilities in an accretion disc. Possible
alternatives include the instability in a radiation-pressure dominated disk but
we argue that a more likely explanation is a modulated mass-transfer due to
tidal stripping of a star on an eccentric orbit around the intermediate-mass
black hole. We consider an evolutionary scenario leading to the creation of
such a system and estimate the probability of its observation. We conclude,
using a simplified dynamical model of the post-collapse cluster, that no more
than 1/100 to 1/10 of Mbh < 10^4 Msun IMBHs - formed by run-away stellar
mergers in the dense collapsed cores of young clusters - could have a few times
1 Msun Main-Sequence star evolve to an AGB on an orbit eccentric enough for
mass transfer at periapse, while avoiding collisional destruction or being
scattered into the IMBH by 2-body encounters. The finite but low probability of
this configuration is consistent with the uniqueness of HLX-1. We note,
however, that the actual response of a standard accretion disk to bursts of
mass transfer may be too slow to explain the observations unless the orbit is
close to parabolic (and hence even rarer) and/or additional heating, presumably

Variety of Clostridium difficile PCR ribotypes in pigs arriving at the slaughterhouse
Food products of animal origin might play a role in interspecies transmission of C. difficile. In pigs, Clostridium difficile can cause neonatal enteritis and can be isolated from faeces from both diseased and healthy animals. To determine the prevalence of C. difficile in Dutch pigs arriving at the slaughterhouse a pilot study was conducted at one slaughterhouse in the Netherlands. Rectal faecal samples were taken from fifty slaughtering pigs from ten farms just after the pigs were sedated. These samples were examined using a real time PCR (BD GeneOhmTM Cdiff Assay), in combination with culturing after enrichment. Using real time PCR, none of the faecal samples were found to be positive for C. difficile while after culturing 14 samples (coming from pigs from nine different farms) were found to be positive for C. difficile. The positive samples derived from 9 different farms and encompassed seven different ribotypes
The S-Star Cluster at the Center of the Milky Way: On the nature of diffuse NIR emission in the inner tenth of a parsec
Sagittarius A*, the super-massive black hole at the center of the Milky Way,
is surrounded by a small cluster of high velocity stars, known as the S-stars.
We aim to constrain the amount and nature of stellar and dark mass associated
with the cluster in the immediate vicinity of Sagittarius A*. We use
near-infrared imaging to determine the -band luminosity function
of the S-star cluster members, and the distribution of the diffuse background
emission and the stellar number density counts around the central black hole.
This allows us to determine the stellar light and mass contribution expected
from the faint members of the cluster. We then use post-Newtonian N-body
techniques to investigate the effect of stellar perturbations on the motion of
S2, as a means of detecting the number and masses of the perturbers. We find
that the stellar mass derived from the -band luminosity
extrapolation is much smaller than the amount of mass that might be present
considering the uncertainties in the orbital motion of the star S2. Also the
amount of light from the fainter S-cluster members is below the amount of
residual light at the position of the S-star cluster after removing the bright
cluster members. If the distribution of stars and stellar remnants is strongly
enough peaked near Sagittarius A*, observed changes in the orbital elements of
S2 can be used to constrain both their masses and numbers. Based on simulations
of the cluster of high velocity stars we find that at a wavelength of 2.2
m close to the confusion level for 8 m class telescopes blend stars will
occur (preferentially near the position of Sagittarius A*) that last for
typically 3 years before they dissolve due to proper motions.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, minor changes to match the published version in

Correlation of carotid artery reactivity with cardiovascular risk factors and coronary artery vasodilator responses in asymptomatic, healthy volunteers.
OBJECTIVES: Carotid artery reactivity (CAR%), involving carotid artery diameter responses to a cold pressor test (CPT), is a noninvasive measure of conduit artery function in humans. This study examined the impact of age and cardiovascular risk factors on the CAR% and the relationship between CAR% and coronary artery vasodilator responses to the CPT. METHODS: Ultrasound was used to measure resting and peak carotid artery diameters during the CPT, with CAR% being calculated as the relative change from baseline (%). We compared CAR% between young (nâ=â50, 24â±â3 years) and older participants (nâ=â44, 61â±â8 years), and subsequently assessed relationships between CAR% and traditional cardiovascular risk factors in 50 participants (44â±â21 years). Subsequently, we compared left anterior descending (LAD) artery velocity (using transthoracic Doppler) with carotid artery diameter (i.e. CAR%) during the CPT (nâ=â33, 37â±â17 years). RESULTS: A significantly larger CAR% was found in young versus older healthy participants (4.1â±â3.7 versus 1.8â±â2.6, Pâ<â0.001). Participants without cardiovascular risk factors demonstrated a higher CAR% than those with at least two risk factors (2.9â±â2.9 versus 0.5â±â2.9, Pâ=â0.019). Carotid artery diameter and LAD velocity increased during CPT (Pâ<â0.001). Carotid diameter and change in velocity correlated with LAD velocity (râ=â0.486 and 0.402, Pâ<â0.004 and 0.02, respectively). CONCLUSION: Older age and cardiovascular risk factors are related to lower CAR%, while CAR% shows good correlation with coronary artery responses to the CPT. Therefore, CAR% may represent a valuable technique to assess cardiovascular risk, while CAR% seems to reflect coronary artery vasodilator function
Constraints on Galactic Intermediate Mass Black Holes
Intermediate Mass Black Holes (IMBHs; 10^1.3-5 M_sun) are thought to form as
relics of Population III stars or from the runaway collapse of stars in young
clusters; their number and very existence are uncertain. We ran N-body
simulations of Galactic IMBHs, modelling them as a halo population distributed
according to a Navarro, Frenk & White (NFW) or a more concentrated Diemand,
Madau & Moore (DMM) density profile. As IMBHs pass through Galactic
molecular/atomic hydrogen regions, they accrete gas, thus becoming X-ray
sources. We constrain the density of Galactic IMBHs, Omega_IMBH, by comparing
the distribution of simulated X-ray sources with the observed one. From the
null detections of Milky Way Ultra-Luminous X-ray sources, and from a
comparison of simulations with unidentified sources in the IBIS/ISGRI catalogue
we find a strong upper limit Omega_IMBH <= 10^-2 Omega_b (<= 10^-1 Omega_b) for
a DMM (NFW) profile, if IMBHs accrete via ADAF disks. Slightly stronger
constraints (Omega_IMBH <= 10^-3 Omega_b for a DMM profile; Omega_IMBH <= 10^-2
Omega_b for a NFW profile) can be derived if IMBHs accrete with higher
efficiency, such as by forming thin accretion disks. Although not very tight,

Impact of metabolic comorbidity on the association between body mass index and heatlh-related quality of life: a Scotland-wide cross-sectional study of 5,608 participants
<p/>Background: The prevalence of obesity is rising in Scotland and globally. Overall, obesity is associated with increased morbidity, mortality and reduced health-related quality of life. Studies suggest that "healthy obesity" (obesity without metabolic comorbidity) may not be associated with morbidity or mortality. Its impact on health-related quality of life is unknown.
<p/>Methods: We extracted data from the Scottish Health Survey on self-reported health-related quality of life, body mass index (BMI), demographic information and comorbidity. SF-12 responses were converted into an overall health utility score. Linear regression analyses were used to explore the association between BMI and health utility, stratified by the presence or absence of metabolic comorbidity (diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia or cardiovascular disease), and adjusted for potential confounders (age, sex and deprivation quintile).
<p/>Results: Of the 5,608 individuals, 3,744 (66.8%) were either overweight or obese and 921 (16.4%) had metabolic comorbidity. There was an inverted U-shaped relationship whereby health utility was highest among overweight individuals and fell with increasing BMI. There was a significant interaction with metabolic comorbidity (p = 0.007). Individuals with metabolic comorbidty had lower utility scores and a steeper decline in utility with increasing BMI (morbidly obese, adjusted coefficient: -0.064, 95% CI -0.115, -0.012, p = 0.015 for metabolic comorbidity versus -0.042, 95% CI -0.067, -0.018, p = 0.001 for no metabolic comorbidity).
<p/>Conclusions: The adverse impact of obesity on health-related quality of life is greater among individuals with metabolic comorbidity. However, increased BMI is associated with reduced health-related quality of life even in the absence of metabolic comorbidity, casting doubt on the notion of "healthy obesity"
