Endovascular treatment of iatrogenic axillary artery pseudoaneurysm under echographic control: A case report
Aim: Brief case report of the treatment of a large axillary artery pseudoaneurysm after a pacemaker using a left brachial cutdown and a retrograde delivery of a covered stent using ultrasound and fluoroscopic guidance. The patient's renal function precluded the use of contrast materials.Case Report: A 77 years old man presenting with acute renal failure and haemoglobin decrease arrived with an expanding pseudoaneurysm of the left axillary artery from a pacemaker placement. Considering the site of the lesion and patient's comorbidities, under echographic control, a Hemobahn \uae stent-graft was placed; fluoroscopy assisted manipulation of guidewires and sheaths into the aortic arch. The procedure was successfully ended without any complications. At 8 months the stent graft was still patent. Conclusion: Ultrasound guidance may represent an alternative for pseudo-aneurysm exclusion without any use of contrast medium, especially in those patient where lesions are easily detectable using ultrasonography and when comorbidities contraindicate aggressive surgical or angiographic approach
Grafting of adipic anhydride to carbon nanotubes through a Diels-Alder cycloaddition/oxidation cascade reaction
Accepted ManuscriptDifferent reactions have been reported for the successful functionalization of carbon nanotubes (CNT). The Diels-Alder cycloaddition is recognized as a plausible chemical approach, but few reports are known where this strategy has been used. In this study, the functionalization was performed by 1,3-butadiene generated from 3-sulfolene under heating conditions in diglyme. This simple and easily scalable method resulted in functionalized CNT with mass losses of 10 - 23 % by thermogravimetric analysis (nitrogen atmosphere). The functionalization was also supported by acid-base titration, elemental analysis, temperature programmed desorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The high content in oxygen detected on the CNT surface was assigned to anhydride formation due to a cascade oxidation of the alkene groups generated in the cycloaddition reaction. The complete evolution of the alkene leads to a grafting density of 4.2 mmol g-1 for the anhydride moiety. Ab-initio calculations in CNT model systems indicate that the Diels-Alder addition of butadiene is a feasible process and that subsequent oxidation reactions may result in the formation of the anhydride moiety. The presence of the anhydride group is a valuable asset for grafting a multitude of complex molecules, namely through the nucleophilic addition of amines.Centro de QuĂmica and Instituto de PolĂmeros e CompĂłsitos of the University of Minho and Fundação para a CiĂȘncia e Tecnologia (FCT) through the Portuguese NMR network (RNRMN), the Project F-COMP-01-0124-FEDER-022716 (ref. Transferrin receptor 2 controls bone mass and pathological bone formation via BMP and Wnt signalling
Transferrin receptor 2 (Tfr2) is mainly expressed in the liver and controls iron homeostasis. Here, we identify Tfr2 as a regulator of bone homeostasis that inhibits bone formation. Mice lacking Tfr2 display increased bone mass and mineralization independent of iron homeostasis and hepatic Tfr2. Bone marrow transplantation experiments and studies of cell-specific Tfr2 knockout mice demonstrate that Tfr2 impairs BMP-p38MAPK signaling and decreases expression of the Wnt inhibitor sclerostin specifically in osteoblasts. Reactivation of MAPK or overexpression of sclerostin rescues skeletal abnormalities in Tfr2 knockout mice. We further show that the extracellular domain of Tfr2 binds BMPs and inhibits BMP-2-induced heterotopic ossification by acting as a decoy receptor. These data indicate that Tfr2 limits bone formation by modulating BMP signaling, possibly through direct interaction with BMP either as a receptor or as a co-receptor in a complex with other BMP receptors. Finally, the Tfr2 extracellular domain may be effective in the treatment of conditions associated with pathological bone formation
Forward Neutral Pion Transverse Single Spin Asymmetries in p+p Collisions at \sqrt{s}=200 GeV
We report precision measurements of the Feynman-x dependence, and first
measurements of the transverse momentum dependence, of transverse single spin
asymmetries for the production of \pi^0 mesons from polarized proton collisions
at \sqrt{s}=200 GeV. The x_F dependence of the results is in fair agreement
with perturbative QCD model calculations that identify orbital motion of quarks
and gluons within the proton as the origin of the spin effects. Results for the
p_T dependence at fixed x_F are not consistent with pQCD-based calculations.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Indications of Conical Emission of Charged Hadrons at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider
Three-particle azimuthal correlation measurements with a high transverse
momentum trigger particle are reported for pp, d+Au, and Au+Au collisions at
200 GeV by the STAR experiment. Dijet structures are observed in pp, d+Au and
peripheral Au+Au collisions. An additional structure is observed in central
Au+Au data, signaling conical emission of correlated charged hadrons. The
conical emission angle is found to be 1.37 +- 0.02(stat) +0.06-0.07(syst),
independent of pt.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl
The James Webb Space Telescope Mission
Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies,
expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling
for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least .
With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000
people realized that vision as the James Webb Space Telescope. A
generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of
the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the
scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000
team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image
quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief
history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing
program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We cite
detailed reports on the design and the measured performance on orbit.Comment: Accepted by PASP for the special issue on The James Webb Space

Time to Switch to Second-line Antiretroviral Therapy in Children With Human Immunodeficiency Virus in Europe and Thailand.
Background: Data on durability of first-line antiretroviral therapy (ART) in children with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are limited. We assessed time to switch to second-line therapy in 16 European countries and Thailand. Methods: Children aged <18 years initiating combination ART (â„2 nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors [NRTIs] plus nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor [NNRTI] or boosted protease inhibitor [PI]) were included. Switch to second-line was defined as (i) change across drug class (PI to NNRTI or vice versa) or within PI class plus change of â„1 NRTI; (ii) change from single to dual PI; or (iii) addition of a new drug class. Cumulative incidence of switch was calculated with death and loss to follow-up as competing risks. Results: Of 3668 children included, median age at ART initiation was 6.1 (interquartile range (IQR), 1.7-10.5) years. Initial regimens were 32% PI based, 34% nevirapine (NVP) based, and 33% efavirenz based. Median duration of follow-up was 5.4 (IQR, 2.9-8.3) years. Cumulative incidence of switch at 5 years was 21% (95% confidence interval, 20%-23%), with significant regional variations. Median time to switch was 30 (IQR, 16-58) months; two-thirds of switches were related to treatment failure. In multivariable analysis, older age, severe immunosuppression and higher viral load (VL) at ART start, and NVP-based initial regimens were associated with increased risk of switch. Conclusions: One in 5 children switched to a second-line regimen by 5 years of ART, with two-thirds failure related. Advanced HIV, older age, and NVP-based regimens were associated with increased risk of switch
