Creep of ice: Further studies
Detailed studies have been done of ice creep as related to the icy satellites, Ganymede and Callisto. Included were: (1) the flow of high-pressure water ices II, III, and V, and (2) frictional sliding of ice I sub h. Work was also begun on the study of the effects of impurities on the flow of ice. Test results are summarized
Childhood- versus Adolescent-Onset Antisocial Youth with Conduct Disorder: Psychiatric Illness, Neuropsychological and Psychosocial Function
The present study investigates whether youths with childhood-onset antisocial behavior have higher rates of psychiatric illness, neuropsychological and psychosocial dysfunction than youths who engage in antisocial behavior for the first time in adolescence. Prior studies have generally focused on single domains of function in heterogeneous samples. The present study also examined the extent to which adolescent-onset antisocial behavior can be considered normative, an assumption of Moffitt's dual taxonomy model.Forty-three subjects (34 males, 9 females, mean age = 15.31, age range 12-21) with a diagnosis of conduct disorder (CD) were recruited through Headspace Services and the Juvenile Justice Community Centre. We compared childhood-onset antisocial youths (n = 23) with adolescent-onset antisocial youths (n = 20) with a conduct disorder, across a battery of psychiatric, neuropsychological and psychosocial measures. Neuropsychological function of both groups was also compared with normative scores from control samples. The childhood-onset group displayed deficits in verbal learning and memory, higher rates of psychosis, childhood maltreatment and more serious violent behavior, all effects associated with a large effect size. Both groups had impaired executive function, falling within the extremely low range (severely impaired).Childhood-onset CD displayed greater cognitive impairment, more psychiatric symptoms and committed more serious violent offences. The finding of severe executive impairment in both childhood- and adolescent-onset groupings challenges the assumption that adolescent-onset antisocial behavior is a normative process
Kinetics of isothermal and non-isothermal precipitation in an Al-6at%Si alloy
A novel theory which describes the progress of a thermally activated reaction under isothermal and linear heating conditions is presented. It incorporates nucleation, growth and impingement and takes account of temperaturedependent solubility. The model generally fits very well to isothermal calorimetry and differential scanning calorimetry data on precipitation in an Al-6 at.% Si alloy. Analysis of the data shows that two processes occur in this precipitation reaction: growth of large Si particles and growth of pre-existing small nuclei. Determination of the sizes of Si precipitates by transmission electron microscopy indicates that interfacial energy contributions are small and have a negligible influence on solubilit
Absolute dimensions of eclipsing binaries. XXVIII. BK Pegasi and other F-type binaries: Prospects for calibration of convective core overshoot
We present a detailed study of the F-type detached eclipsing binary BK Peg,
based on new photometric and spectroscopic observations. The two components,
which have evolved to the upper half of the main-sequence band, are quite
different with masses and radii of (1.414 +/- 0.007 Msun, 1.988 +/- 0.008 Rsun)
and (1.257 +/- 0.005 Msun, 1.474 +/- 0.017 Rsun), respectively. The 5.49 day
period orbit of BK Peg is slightly eccentric (e = 0.053). The measured
rotational velocities are 16.6 +/- 0.2 (primary) and 13.4 +/- 0.2 (secondary)
km/s. For the secondary component this corresponds to (pseudo)synchronous
rotation, whereas the primary component seems to rotate at a slightly lower
rate. We derive an iron abundance of [Fe/H] =-0.12 +/- 0.07 and similar
abundances for Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr and Ni. Yonsei-Yale and Victoria-Regina
evolutionary models for the observed metal abundance reproduce BK Peg at ages
of 2.75 and 2.50 Gyr, respectively, but tend to predict a lower age for the
more massive primary component than for the secondary. We find the same age
trend for three other upper main-sequence systems in a sample of well studied
eclipsing binaries with components in the 1.15-1.70 Msun range, where
convective core overshoot is gradually ramped up in the models. We also find
that the Yonsei-Yale models systematically predict higher ages than the
Victoria-Regina models. The sample includes BW Aqr, and as a supplement we have
determined a [Fe/H] abundance of -0.07 +/- 0.11 for this late F-type binary. We
propose to use BK Peg, BW Aqr, and other well-studied 1.15-1.70 Msun eclipsing
binaries to fine-tune convective core overshoot, diffusion, and possibly other
ingredients of modern theoretical evolutionary models.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic
Chaotic inflation on the brane
We consider slow-roll inflation in the context of recently proposed
four-dimensional effective gravity induced on the world-volume of a three-brane
in five-dimensional Einstein gravity. We find significant modifications of the
simplest chaotic inflationary scenario when the five-dimensional Planck scale
is below about 10^{17} GeV. We use the comoving curvature perturbation, which
remains constant on super-Hubble scales, in order to calculate the spectrum of
adiabatic density perturbations generated. Modifications to the Friedmann
constraint equation lead to a faster Hubble expansion at high energies and a
more strongly damped evolution of the scalar field. This assists slow-roll,
enhances the amount of inflation obtained in any given model, and drives the
perturbations towards an exactly scale-invariant Harrison-Zel'dovich spectrum.
In chaotic inflation driven by a massive scalar field we show that inflation
can occur at field values far below the four-dimensional Planck scale, though
above the five-dimensional fundamental scale.Comment: New figure to show accuracy of high-energy approximation. Version

Experimental Study of the Radiative Decays K+ -> mu+ nu e+e- and K+ -> e+ nu e+e-
Experiment 865 at the Brookhaven AGS obtained 410 K+ -> e+ nu e+e- and 2679
K+ -> mu+ nu e+e- events including 10% and 19% background. The branching ratios
were measured to be (2.48+-0.14(stat.)+-0.14(syst.))x10^-8 (m_ee>150 MeV) and
(7.06+-0.16+-0.26)x10^-8 (m_ee>145 MeV), respectively. Results for the decay
form factors are presented.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, RevTeX
Radial Velocity Studies of Close Binary Stars. XI
Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital radial
velocity variations are presented for ten close binary systems: DU Boo, ET Boo,
TX Cnc, V1073 Cyg, HL Dra, AK Her, VW LMi, V566 Oph, TV UMi and AG Vir. By this
contribution, the DDO program has reached the point of 100 published radial
velocity orbits. The radial velocities have been determined using an improved
fitting technique which uses rotational profiles to approximate individual
peaks in broadening functions.
Three systems, ET Boo, VW LMi and TV UMi, were found to be quadruple while AG
Vir appears to be a spectroscopic triple. ET Boo, a member of a close visual
binary with years, was previously known to be a multiple
system, but we show that the second component is actually a close,
non-eclipsing binary. The new observations enabled us to determine the
spectroscopic orbits of the companion, non-eclipsing pairs in ET Boo and VW
LMi. The particularly interesting case is VW LMi, where the period of the
mutual revolution of the two spectroscopic binaries is only 355 days.
While most of the studied eclipsing pairs are contact binaries, ET Boo is
composed of two double-lined detached binaries and HL Dra is single-lined
detached or semi-detached system. Five systems of this group were observed
spectroscopically before: TX Cnc, V1073 Cyg, AK Her (as a single-lined binary),
V566 Oph, AG Vir, but our new data are of much higher quality than the previous
studies.Comment: Accepted by AJ, August 2006, 10 figures, 3 table
Spinning particles in the vacuum C metric
The motion of a spinning test particle given by the Mathisson-Papapetrou
equations is studied on an exterior vacuum C metric background spacetime
describing the accelerated motion of a spherically symmetric gravitational
source. We consider circular orbits of the particle around the direction of
acceleration of the source. The symmetries of this configuration lead to the
reduction of the differential equations of motion to algebraic relations. The
spin supplementary conditions as well as the coupling between the spin of the
particle and the acceleration of the source are discussed.Comment: IOP macros used, eps figures n.
Stacked crop rotations and cultural practices for canola and flax yield and quality
Canola (Brassica napus L.) and flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) are important oilseed crops, but improved management practices to enhance their yields and quality are needed. We studied the effect of stacked versus alternate‐year crop rotations and traditional versus improved cultural practices on canola and flax growth, seed yield, oil concentration, and N‐use efficiency from 2006 to 2011 in the northern Great Plains, USA. Stacked rotations were durum (Triticum turgidum L.)‐durum‐canola‐pea (Pisum sativum L.) (DDCP) and durum‐durum‐flax‐pea (DDFP). Alternate‐year rotations were durum‐canola‐durum‐pea (DCDP) and durum‐flax‐durum‐pea (DFDP). The traditional cultural practice included a combination of conventional tillage, recommended seed rate, broadcast N fertilization, and reduced stubble height. The improved cultural practice included a combination of no‐tillage, increased seed rate, banded N fertilization, and increased stubble height. Canola stand count was 36–123% greater with the improved than the traditional cultural practice in 2006, 2009, 2010, and 2011. Canola pod number and oil concentration were 3–36% greater in the improved than the traditional practice in 2007 and 2010, but trends reversed by 5–19% in 2008. Flax stand count was 28% greater with DFDP than DDFP in 2007 and 56% greater in the improved than the traditional practice in 2010. Flax pod number, seed weight, seed yield, N content, N‐use efficiency, and N‐removal index varied with crop rotations, cultural practices, and years. Canola growth and oil concentration increased with the improved cultural practice as well as flax growth, yield, and quality enhanced with alternate‐year crop rotation and the improved cultural practice in wet years
