Music in advertising and consumer identity: The search for Heideggerian authenticity
This study discusses netnographic findings involving 472 YouTube postings categorized to identify themes regarding consumersâ experience of music in advertisements. Key themes relate to musical taste, musical indexicality, musical repetition and musical authenticity. Postings reveal how music conveys individual taste and is linked to personal memories and Heideggerâs coincidental time where moments of authenticity may be triggered in a melee of emotions, memories and projections. Identity protection is enabled as consumers frequently resist advertisersâ attempts to use musical repetition to impose normative identity. Critiques of repetition in the music produce Heideggerian anxiety leading to critically reflective resistance. Similarly, where advertising devalues the authenticity of iconic pieces of music, consumers often resist such authenticity transgressions as a threat to their own identity. The Heideggerian search for meaning in life emphasizes the significance of philosophically driven ideological authenticity in consumersâ responses to music in advertisements
Ergogenic and psychological effects of synchronous music during circuit-type exercise
This is the post print version of the article. The official published version can be obtained from the link below. Objectives: Motivational music when synchronized with movement has been found to improve performance in anaerobic and aerobic endurance tasks, although gender differences pertaining to the potential benefits of such music have seldom been investigated. The present study addresses the psychological and ergogenic effects of synchronous music during circuit-type exercise. Design: A mixed-model design was employed in which there was a within-subjects factor (two experimental conditions and a control) and a between-subjects factor (gender). Methods: Participants (N ÂŒ 26) performed six circuit-type exercises under each of three synchronous conditions: motivational music, motivationally-neutral (oudeterous) music, and a metronome control. Dependent measures comprised anaerobic endurance, which was assessed using the number of repetitions performed prior to the failure to maintain synchronicity, and post-task affect, which was assessed using Hardy and Rejeskiâs (1989) Feeling Scale. Mixed-model 3 (Condition) X 2 (Gender) ANOVAs, ANCOVAs, and MANOVA were used to analyze the data. Results: Synchronous music did not elicit significant (p < .05) ergogenic or psychological effects in isolation; rather, significant (p < .05) Condition X Gender interaction effects emerged for both total repetitions and mean affect scores. Women and men showed differential affective responses to synchronous music and men responded more positively than women to metronomic regulation of their movements. Women derived the greatest overall benefit from both music conditions. Conclusions: Men may place greater emphasis on the metronomic regulation of movement than the remaining, extra-rhythmical, musical qualities. Men and women appear to exhibit differential responses in terms of affective responses to synchronous music
A bright, high rotation-measure FRB that skewers the M33 halo
We report the detection of a bright fast radio burst, FRB\,191108, with
Apertif on the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT). The interferometer
allows us to localise the FRB to a narrow 5\arcsec\times7\arcmin ellipse by
employing both multibeam information within the Apertif phased-array feed (PAF)
beam pattern, and across different tied-array beams. The resulting sight line
passes close to Local Group galaxy M33, with an impact parameter of only
18\,kpc with respect to the core. It also traverses the much larger
circumgalactic medium of M31, the Andromeda Galaxy. We find that the shared
plasma of the Local Group galaxies could contribute 10\% of its
dispersion measure of 588\,pc\,cm. FRB\,191108 has a Faraday rotation
measure of +474\,\,rad\,m, which is too large to be explained by
either the Milky Way or the intergalactic medium. Based on the more moderate
RMs of other extragalactic sources that traverse the halo of M33, we conclude
that the dense magnetised plasma resides in the host galaxy. The FRB exhibits
frequency structure on two scales, one that is consistent with quenched
Galactic scintillation and broader spectral structure with
\,MHz. If the latter is due to scattering in the shared
M33/M31 CGM, our results constrain the Local Group plasma environment. We found
no accompanying persistent radio sources in the Apertif imaging survey data

Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.
BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF. The Cholecystectomy As A Day Case (CAAD) Score: A Validated Score of Preoperative Predictors of Successful Day-Case Cholecystectomy Using the CholeS Data Set
Background
Day-case surgery is associated with significant patient and cost benefits. However, only 43% of cholecystectomy patients are discharged home the same day. One hypothesis is day-case cholecystectomy rates, defined as patients discharged the same day as their operation, may be improved by better assessment of patients using standard preoperative variables.
Methods
Data were extracted from a prospectively collected data set of cholecystectomy patients from 166 UK and Irish hospitals (CholeS). Cholecystectomies performed as elective procedures were divided into main (75%) and validation (25%) data sets. Preoperative predictors were identified, and a risk score of failed day case was devised using multivariate logistic regression. Receiver operating curve analysis was used to validate the score in the validation data set.
Results
Of the 7426 elective cholecystectomies performed, 49% of these were discharged home the same day. Same-day discharge following cholecystectomy was less likely with older patients (OR 0.18, 95% CI 0.15â0.23), higher ASA scores (OR 0.19, 95% CI 0.15â0.23), complicated cholelithiasis (OR 0.38, 95% CI 0.31 to 0.48), male gender (OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.58â0.74), previous acute gallstone-related admissions (OR 0.54, 95% CI 0.48â0.60) and preoperative endoscopic intervention (OR 0.40, 95% CI 0.34â0.47). The CAAD score was developed using these variables. When applied to the validation subgroup, a CAAD score of â€5 was associated with 80.8% successful day-case cholecystectomy compared with 19.2% associated with a CAAD score >5 (pâ<â0.001).
Conclusions
The CAAD score which utilises data readily available from clinic letters and electronic sources can predict same-day discharges following cholecystectomy
The effect of dopants on the activity Of MoO3/ZSM-5 catalysts for the dehydroaromatisation of methane
The effect of a number of dopants â Co2+, Fe3+, Al3+, Ga3+ and P(V) â on the catalytic activity of MoO3/ZSM-5 dehydroaromatisation catalysts has been investigated. Promotional effects were observed with Fe3+, Al3+and Ga3+ , whereas P(V) added in the form of phosphomolybdic acid decreased the benzene formation rate. Doping with Co2+ was not observed to produce any promotional effects, aside from an initial high conversion and burst of hydrogen which was short-lived. In the case of iron, although the benzene formation rate was close to that for the non-doped parent catalyst in the early stages, benzene formation was enhanced at longer times on stream and the addition of iron was observed to enhance methane conversion, principally through enhanced coke formation. The addition of gallium was found to produce an enhancement of benzene production in the early stages of reaction, but its principal effect was the reduction of hydrogen producing side reactions associated with the formation of coke. In comparing the effects of metal ion addition, it is notable that the impregnation solutions of Fe3+, Al3+ and Ga3+ are acidic. Possible effects of these dopants such as zeolite dealumination, modification of catalyst acidity and the formation of mixed molybdenum containing phases or re-dispersion of the MoO3 phase can be advanced as potential explanations for the observed effects
