Integrating Economics, Management, and Human Relationship Issues into Training for Successful Farm Family Businesses
Farm family businesses are not immune to troublesome family dynamics as they make decisions around production, management, and marketing issues. A project funded by the USDA Risk Management Agency in Kansas has pulled together an interdisciplinary team to holistically address farm family business challenges in both conventional and specialty operations. Farmer-to-farmer mentoring, farm family individualized coaching sessions, farm family and agricultural advisor training, and a Web presence are the project delivery options. The project team shares the lessons they have learned after 4 years of program implementation
Numerical representation of quantum states in the positive-P and Wigner representations
Numerical stochastic integration is a powerful tool for the investigation of
quantum dynamics in interacting many body systems. As with all numerical
integration of differential equations, the initial conditions of the system
being investigated must be specified. With application to quantum optics in
mind, we show how various commonly considered quantum states can be numerically
simulated by the use of widely available Gaussian and uniform random number
generators. We note that the same methods can also be applied to computational
studies of Bose-Einstein condensates, and give some examples of how this can be

An Analysis of the Universal Home Care Program: Considerations for Implementation with the Context of Maine\u27s Existing LTSS Programs
A citizen initiative on the November 2018 ballot (Question 1, An Act to Establish Universal Home Care for Seniors and Persons with Disabilities) would establish a Universal Home Care Program (UHC Program) to serve older adults and persons with a disability living in Maine. This report does not constitute either support for or opposition to the referendum but is intended as an independent assessment of how the UHC Program could be implemented if it were to be approved by Maine voters. This analysis focuses on the implications of the UHC Program within the context of the Medicaid and state-funded long term services and supports programs currently administered by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. The analysis assumes implementation would be guided by three goals: 1) avoiding an unintended negative impact on existing programs, 2) optimizing the use of public resources, and 3) advancing a community first model of care that promotes living at home when appropriate and preferred. This report does not address the financing or governance of the UHC Program as those are defined under the proposed legislation
Absolute dimensions of eclipsing binaries. XXVIII. BK Pegasi and other F-type binaries: Prospects for calibration of convective core overshoot
We present a detailed study of the F-type detached eclipsing binary BK Peg,
based on new photometric and spectroscopic observations. The two components,
which have evolved to the upper half of the main-sequence band, are quite
different with masses and radii of (1.414 +/- 0.007 Msun, 1.988 +/- 0.008 Rsun)
and (1.257 +/- 0.005 Msun, 1.474 +/- 0.017 Rsun), respectively. The 5.49 day
period orbit of BK Peg is slightly eccentric (e = 0.053). The measured
rotational velocities are 16.6 +/- 0.2 (primary) and 13.4 +/- 0.2 (secondary)
km/s. For the secondary component this corresponds to (pseudo)synchronous
rotation, whereas the primary component seems to rotate at a slightly lower
rate. We derive an iron abundance of [Fe/H] =-0.12 +/- 0.07 and similar
abundances for Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr and Ni. Yonsei-Yale and Victoria-Regina
evolutionary models for the observed metal abundance reproduce BK Peg at ages
of 2.75 and 2.50 Gyr, respectively, but tend to predict a lower age for the
more massive primary component than for the secondary. We find the same age
trend for three other upper main-sequence systems in a sample of well studied
eclipsing binaries with components in the 1.15-1.70 Msun range, where
convective core overshoot is gradually ramped up in the models. We also find
that the Yonsei-Yale models systematically predict higher ages than the
Victoria-Regina models. The sample includes BW Aqr, and as a supplement we have
determined a [Fe/H] abundance of -0.07 +/- 0.11 for this late F-type binary. We
propose to use BK Peg, BW Aqr, and other well-studied 1.15-1.70 Msun eclipsing
binaries to fine-tune convective core overshoot, diffusion, and possibly other
ingredients of modern theoretical evolutionary models.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic
Rotation, activity, and lithium abundance in cool binary stars
We have used two robotic telescopes to obtain time-series high-resolution
spectroscopy and V I and/or by photometry for a sample of 60 active stars.
Orbital solutions are presented for 26 SB2 and 19 SB1 systems with
unprecedented phase coverage and accuracy. The total of 6,609 R=55,000 echelle
spectra are also used to systematically determine effective temperatures,
gravities, metallicities, rotational velocities, lithium abundances and
absolute H{\alpha}-core fluxes as a function of time. The photometry is used to
infer unspotted brightness, V - I and/or b - y colors, spot-induced brightness
amplitudes and precise rotation periods. Our data are complemented by
literature data and are used to determine rotation-temperature-activity
relations for active binary components. We also relate lithium abundance to
rotation and surface temperature. We find that 74% of all known
rapidly-rotating active binary stars are synchronized and in circular orbits
but 26% are rotating asynchronously of which half have Prot > Porb and e > 0.
Because rotational synchronization is predicted to occur before orbital
circularization active binaries should undergo an extra spin-down besides tidal
dissipation. We suspect this to be due to a magnetically channeled wind with
its subsequent braking torque. We find a steep increase of rotation period with
decreasing effective temperature for active stars. For inactive, single giants
with Prot > 100 d, the relation is much weaker. Our data also indicate a
period-activity relation for H{\alpha} of the form RH{\alpha} \propto P - 0.24
for binaries and RH{\alpha} \propto P -0.14 for singles. Lithium abundances in
our sample increase with effective temperature. On average, binaries of
comparable effective temperature appear to exhibit 0.25 dex less surface
lithium than singles. We also find a trend of increased Li abundance with
rotational period of form log n(Li) \propto - 0.6 log Prot
Liquid racism and the Danish Prophet Muhammad cartoons

Copyright @ 2010 The Author.This article examines reactions to the October 2005 publication of the Prophet Muhammad cartoons in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten. It does so by using the concept of âliquid racismâ. While the controversy arose because it is considered blasphemous by many Muslims to create images of the Prophet Muhammad, the article argues that the meaning of the cartoons is multidimensional, that their analysis is significantly more complex than most commentators acknowledge, and that this complexity can best be addressed via the concept of liquid racism. The article examines the liquidity of the cartoons in relation to four readings. These see the cartoons as: (1) a criticism of Islamic fundamentalism; (2) blasphemous images; (3) Islamophobic and racist; and (4) satire and a defence of freedom of speech. Finally, the relationship between postmodernity and the rise of fundamentalism is discussed because the cartoons, reactions to them, and Islamic fundamentalism, all contain an important postmodern dimension.ESR
