    An Underlying Asymmetry within Particle-size Segregation

    We experimentally study particle scale dynamics during segregation of a bidisperse mixture under oscillatory shear. Large and small particles show an underlying asymmetry that is dependent on the local particle concentration, with small particles segregating faster in regions of many large particles and large particles segregating slower in regions of many small particles. We quantify the asymmetry on bulk and particle scales, and capture it theoretically. This gives new physical insight into segregation and reveals a similarity with sedimentation, traffic flow and particle diffusion

    Well-posed continuum equations for granular flow with compressibility and μ(I)-rheology

    Continuum modelling of granular flow has been plagued with the issue of ill-posed equations for a long time. Equations for incompressible, two-dimensional flow based on the Coulomb friction law are ill-posed regardless of the deformation, whereas the rate-dependent μ(I)\mu(I)-rheology is ill-posed when the non-dimensional strain-rate II is too high or too low. Here, incorporating ideas from Critical-State Soil Mechanics, we derive conditions for well-posedness of PDEs that combine compressibility with II-dependent rheology. When the II-dependence comes from a specific friction coefficient μ(I)\mu(I), our results show that, with compressibility, the equations are well-posed for all deformation rates provided that μ(I)\mu(I) satisfies certain minimal, physically natural, inequalities

    Granular shocks, particle size segregation and levee formation in avalanches and debris flows

    Debris flows, avalanches and other geophysical mass flows pose a significant hazard to settlements in or near mountainous regions. Understanding the physical processes that govern these flows is an essential part of hazard assessment and mitigation strategies. This thesis addresses two aspects of geophysical mass flows: flow self-channelisation due to the formation of lateral levees, and granular shocks, which occur when a rapidly-moving debris flow or avalanche collides with an obstacle. We present the results of large-scale debris flow experiments in which the flow is channelised by coarse-particle levees that form at the flow margins. The flow surface velocities are measured with high speed overhead photography, and the deposits both sampled to obtain the grain size distribution and excavated to recover the deposited locations of tracer pebbles that were introduced in to the flow. We propose a model, supported by evidence from the large-scale experiments, that describes in detail the size segregation and kinematic transport processes responsible for the deposition of lateral levees. The second problem addressed in the thesis concerns granular shocks, or jumps, which are rapid changes in the depth and velocity of granular avalanches. We investigate these through experiments in which a falling jet of granular material impacts on an inclined plane, generating a steady granular jump, which is either teardrop-shaped or 'blunted'. Numerical solutions of a depth-averaged flow model agree quantitatively with many of the observed flow features. We use this model show that the transition between the teardrop-shaped and blunted jump regimes corresponds to a transition between two shock reflection structures, known as a regular and a Mach shock reflection. On planes inclined at a shallow angle, we demonstrate a wide variety of unsteady and channelised flows, which occur due to the complex interaction between flowing and stationary regions of granular material.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

    Despite over 100 years of acoustic seabed mapping, only around 15% of the seafloor has ever been directly mapped and little of the mapping performed has been systematic or over larger areas. The result is that our knowledge of seafloor structure is rudimentary and our understanding of the processes which form them has, in principle, advanced little since the advent of plate tectonics. Societally, the seafloor plays a vital role in humanity’s "life support system", for example providing habitat for marine organisms, stimulating mixing of ocean water as part of the overturning circulation system and increasingly being the site of industrial installations. It is scientifically and societally imperative that we bring the level of knowledge of the surface of our planet up to that of bodies like Moon and Mars that are mapped with a resolution better than 100 m per pixel. It is also essential that the data are made freely available to all to support research and conservation. The aim of this cruise was to map previously uncharted part of the tropical Atlantic using the ship’s multibeam system and to provide the data to global open databases as well as to acquire magnetic gradient data along the same tracks. Magnetic anomalies from so-called Oceanic Core Complexes challenged the conventional view that marine magnetic anomalies arose in the upper, extrusive layer of the oceanic crust, because the crust has been stripped away at these complexes. We therefore collected magnetic data simultaneously to the multibeam data in order to constrain the interpretation of the observed seabed morphology

    The Treatment of People with Mental Illness in the Criminal Justice System: The Example of Oneida County, New York

    This publication is two-fold: an executive summary and the report itself. The executive summary provides a general overview of the larger report, on the criminalization of the mentally ill. It begins by summarizing three case studies from the report that concern the intersection of mental health issues and the criminal justice system in Oneida County in New York State. It then provides a brief historical overview of mental health issues and the criminal justice system before going on to discuss the current best practices in addressing the criminalization of the mentally ill, including law-enforcement mechanisms, mental health courts, and reintegration programs. Next, the paper identifies the shortcomings of these practices and the lack of organizational and financial capacity that hobbles concerned stakeholders from effectively tackling the issue. The paper concludes by proposing a general program for immediate action on local and national scales

    Modelling the public health impact of male circumcision for HIV prevention in high prevalence areas in Africa

    Background: Recent clinical trials in Africa, in combination with several observational epidemiological studies, have provided evidence that male circumcision can reduce HIV female-to-male transmission risk by 60% or more. However, the public health impact of large-scale male circumcision programs for HIV prevention is unclear. Methods: Two mathematical models were examined to explore this issue: a random mixing model and a compartmental model that distinguishes risk groups associated with sex work. In the compartmental model, two scenarios were developed, one calculating HIV transmission and prevalence in a context similar to the country of Botswana, and one similar to Nyanza Province, in western Kenya. Results: In both models, male circumcision programs resulted in large and sustained declines in HIV prevalence over time among both men and women. Men benefited somewhat more than women, but prevalence among women was also reduced substantially. With 80% male circumcision uptake, the reductions in prevalence ranged from 45% to 67% in the two "countries", and with 50% uptake, from 25% to 41%. It would take over a decade for the intervention to reach its full effect. Conclusion: Large-scale uptake of male circumcision services in African countries with high HIV prevalence, and where male circumcision is not now routinely practised, could lead to substantial reductions in HIV transmission and prevalence over time among both men and women

    Post-translational modifications of chromatin contribute to the epigenetic control of gene transcription. The response to food intake and individual nutrients also includes epigenetic events. Bile acids are necessary for lipid digestion and absorption, and more recently have emerged as signaling molecules. Their synthesis is transcriptionally regulated also in relation to the fasted-to-fed cycle, and interestingly, the underlying mechanisms include chromatin remodeling at promoters of key genes involved in their metabolism. Several compounds present in nutrients affect gene transcription through epigenetic mechanisms and recent studies demonstrate that, beyond the well known anti-cancer properties, they beneficially affect energy metabolism

    Optimal Resting-Growth Strategies of Microbial Populations in Fluctuating Environments

    Bacteria spend most of their lifetime in non-growing states which allow them to survive extended periods of stress and starvation. When environments improve, they must quickly resume growth to maximize their share of limited nutrients. Cells with higher stress resistance often survive longer stress durations at the cost of needing more time to resume growth, a strong disadvantage in competitive environments. Here we analyze the basis of optimal strategies that microorganisms can use to cope with this tradeoff. We explicitly show that the prototypical inverse relation between stress resistance and growth rate can explain much of the different types of behavior observed in stressed microbial populations. Using analytical mathematical methods, we determine the environmental parameters that decide whether cells should remain vegetative upon stress exposure, downregulate their metabolism to an intermediate optimum level, or become dormant. We find that cell-cell variability, or intercellular noise, is consistently beneficial in the presence of extreme environmental fluctuations, and that it provides an efficient population-level mechanism for adaption in a deteriorating environment. Our results reveal key novel aspects of responsive phenotype switching and its role as an adaptive strategy in changing environments
