    Psychological stress: Its effect on periodontal status of individuals

    Background: Periodontitis is the inflammation and infection of the tissues that support the teeth. Growing evidence suggests that the psychosocial factors such as stress, depression, and level of social support provoke changes in host defense mechanisms that modify the disease process. Aims: This study aimed to determine if any correlation existed between social support, stress, and periodontal status of individuals. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 630 subjects (aged 25-70 years) suffering from chronic periodontitis. Questionnaire was the primary tool for data collection. Oral hygiene status and periodontal status were assessed using plaque index and clinical attachment level. Results: The data were analyzed by using statistical software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17.0. Periodontitis showed a significant correlation with work tension, economic problems, plaque index, and unsecured job. Conclusion: Stress is an important risk factor for periodontal disease and has a confounding effect in presence of plaque on the periodontal status. We suggest that patients who are under stress should be provided meticulous periodontal care to avoid worsening of periodontal disease

    Management of aggressive periodontitis patient with implant supported prosthesis

    Aggressive periodontitis (AgP) comprises a group of rare, often severe, rapidly progressive forms of periodontitis which is characterized by an early age of clinical manifestations. It usually affects people under 30 years of age, but patients may be older. Microbiota associated are Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis. The presence of highly pathogenic bacteria, severe periodontal bone destruction and the refractory nature of this disease tends to deter the clinician from placing implants in these patients. This case report demonstrates the placement of implants in a patient with AgP with successful 18 months follow-up

    Deep orbital dermoid cyst bulging into the superior orbital fissure: Clinical presentation and management

    Purpose: To present a case of deep orbital dermoid cyst with emphasis on clinical presentation, imaging spectrum, differential diagnosis and management. Case Report: A 28-year-old female was referred to our hospital with chief complaint of drooping of right eyelid and progressive headache. Ocular motility, visual acuity and fundus examination were normal. computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a well-defined, intraosseous deep orbital dermoid cyst (5.9 mm × 12.5 mm) located near the apex of right orbit, extending from greater wing of sphenoid into the superior orbital fissure. Due to occulomotor nerve (superior and inferior divisions) compression which passes through the superior orbital fissure, ipsilateral headache and ptosis occurred. Complete surgical excision of cyst was performed using noninvasive extracranial lateral orbitotomy approach. After removal of the cyst, curette and cutting drill were used to thoroughly remove any residual cystic content. Histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis. The healing was uneventful postoperatively. Conclusion: CT and MRI are easy, reliable, safe and effective imaging methods for establishing the diagnosis of orbital dermoid cyst. Size, location and manifestations are the most important determinants of the disease management. Complete surgical excision without rupture of the cyst is the treatment of choice

    A case of post encephalitic optic neuritis: Clinical spectrum, differential diagnosis and management

    Purpose: Most cases of optic neuritis are idiopathic or are associated with multiple sclerosis. We present a case in which a young female developed post-infectious left optic neuritis following herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE). Case Report: A 24-year-old female presented with a severe headache, fever, and malaise of a one-week duration. Viral encephalitis was diagnosed and treated; intravenous acyclovir (750 mg every 8 h) was administered for 14 days. The patient improved clinically and was prescribed oral valacyclovir (1,000 mg, three times daily) for an additional 3 months as an outpatient. The patient presented again four weeks after the initial admission with left periocular pain and other typical manifestations of optic neuritis. We diagnosed post-infectious left optic neuritis following viral encephalitis. Corticosteroid therapy with 250 mg intravenous methylprednisolone every 6 hours was initiated and the patient showed rapid significant recovery. Conclusion: This case report highlights the patient's clinical course and includes a brief history of the systemic effects of HSE, as well as the pathophysiology, management, and differential diagnosis of post-encephalitic optic neuritis. We suggest that clinicians should routinely perform an ophthalmologic examination during the follow-up visits of such patients

    International audienceThis paper describes the COMBINE software package used for statistical analyses by the CMS Collaboration. The package, originally designed to perform searches for a Higgs boson and the combined analysis of those searches, has evolved to become the statistical analysis tool presently used in the majority of measurements and searches performed by the CMS Collaboration. It is not specific to the CMS experiment, and this paper is intended to serve as a reference for users outside of the CMS Collaboration, providing an outline of the most salient features and capabilities. Readers are provided with the possibility to run COMBINE and reproduce examples provided in this paper using a publicly available container image. Since the package is constantly evolving to meet the demands of ever-increasing data sets and analysis sophistication, this paper cannot cover all details of COMBINE. However, the online documentation referenced within this paper provides an up-to-date and complete user guide
