Investigation of the role of neutron transfer in the fusion of 32,34S with 197Au,208Pb using quasi-elastic scattering
Excitation functions for quasi-elastic scattering have been measured at
backward angles for the systems 32,34S+197Au and 32,34S+208Pb for energies
spanning the Coulomb barrier. Representative distributions, sensitive to the
low energy part of the fusion barrier distribution, have been extracted from
the data. For the fusion reactions of 32,34S with 197Au couplings related to
the nuclear structure of 197Au appear to be dominant in shaping the low energy
part of the barrier distibution. For the system 32S+208Pb the barrier
distribution is broader and extends further to lower energies, than in the case
of 34S+208Pb. This is consistent with the interpretation that the neutron
pick-up channels are energetically more favoured in the 32S induced reaction
and therefore couple more strongly to the relative motion. It may also be due
to the increased collectivity of 32S, when compared with 34S.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
Impacts of climate change and variability on fish value chains in Uganda
This study examines the vulnerability of fish pr oduction in Uganda, particularly as it r elates to the predicted impacts from climate change, using the concept of the value chain. The value chain approach has been recommended as a useful tool to study specific challenges facing a sector resulting from various drivers of change, including climate. Critically, such analyses can reveal context-specific response strategies to enhance a sector (Jacinto and Pomer oy 2010). The specific purpose of the study was to identify curr ent and potential impacts of climate change and corresponding adaptation strategies in fish value chains. The study builds upon information fr om earlier value chain analyses on fisheries and aquaculture production in Uganda to provide a more in-depth understanding of issues facing the fish industry, in particular, those to be incorporated in the CGIAR Resear ch Program Livestock and Fish

Stable model equations for long water waves
In this paper, a sequel to two others [1, 2], some extensions and improvements of this earlier work are presented. Among these are: A more precise version of the proof of the basic canonical theorem, some considerations on conservation laws and their relation, a more complete treatment of the stability of the models, especially with respect to the wave amplitude, a short treatment of the Lagrangian version of the theory, a stable discrete model which might be useful for numerical experiments and an extension of the method to the case of slowly varying water depth
Ultrafast dynamics of neutral superexcited Oxygen: A direct measurement of the competition between autoionization and predissociation
Using ultrafast extreme ultraviolet pulses, we performed a direct measurement
of the relaxation dynamics of neutral superexcited states corresponding to the
nl\sigma_g(c^4\Sigma_u^-) Rydberg series of O_2. An XUV attosecond pulse train
was used to create a temporally localized Rydberg wavepacket and the ensuing
electronic and nuclear dynamics were probed using a time-delayed femtosecond
near-infrared pulse. We investigated the competing predissociation and
autoionization mechanisms for superexcited molecules and found that
autoionization is dominant for the low n Rydberg states. We measured an
autoionization lifetime of 92+/-6 fs and 180+/-10 fs for (5s,4d)\sigma_g and
(6s,5d)\sigma_g Rydberg state groups respectively. We determine that the
disputed neutral dissociation lifetime for the \nu=0 vibrational level of the
Rydberg series is 1100+/-100fs.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
