    Bionomia de Culex quinquefasciatus em áreas urbanas no Rio de Janeiro, RJ

    OBJECTIVE: To evaluate density, parity rates, daily survival and longevity of natural populations of Culex quinquefasciatus in three neighborhoods with distinct socio-economic and infrastructure profiles. METHODS: Mosquito collections of the Culex quinquefasciatus species were performed weekly during two four month periods, from August to November 2008 (spring) and March to June 2009 (fall), in a favela (slum), a suburban area and a middle class area of Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil. Collections were performed with backpack aspirators, in 20 randomly selected houses in each area per week, during 15-20 minutes per house. Ovaries were removed from captured females and classified as initial, intermediary or final stage. Furthermore, females were dissected for determination of parity based on the condition of the tracheal system. Mosquito survival rate and longevity were estimated on a per month basis for each neighborhood. RESULTS: We collected a total of 2,062 Culex quinquefasciatus, but monthly vector density was not correlated with temperature and rainfall. We dissected the ovaries of 625 Culex quinquefasciatus, and overall, there was a higher proportion of nulliparous females during the dryer months, while gravid females were more frequent in rainy months. In the middle class neighborhood, the parity rate reached up to 93.75% with survivorship of 0.979. Lower parity and survival rates were obtained in the suburban area (as low as 36.4% parity and 0.711 daily survival). Up to 84.7% of Culex quinquefasciatus females could survive the eight day period needed to complete West Nile Virus incubation. CONCLUSIONS: The survival rate of Culex quinquefasciatus varied significantly between the neighborhoods. This suggests that vectorial capacity and disease transmission risk may vary greatly between different urban areas, which is potentially useful information for vector control programs.OBJETIVO: Evaluar densidad, tasa de paridad, sobrevivencia diaria y longevidad de poblaciones naturales de Culex quinquefasciatus de tres localidades con diferentes perfiles socioeconómicos y de infraestructura. MÉTODOS: Mosquitos de la especie Culex quinquefasciatus fueron colectados semanalmente en dos períodos de cuatro meses, de agosto a noviembre de 2008 y de marzo a junio de 2009, en un barrio, un área de suburbio y una urbanización de clase media en Rio de Janeiro, Litoral Sudeste de Brasil. Las colectas se realizaron con ayuda de aspiradores costales en 20 domicilios, aleatoriamente seleccionados por semana y por área, durante 15-20 minutos por domicilio. A las hembras capturadas se les retiraron los ovarios y clasificaron en fases inicial, intermediario y final. Adicionalmente, las hembras fueron diseccionadas para determinar la paridad de acuerdo con las condiciones del sistema traqueal. La tasa de sobrevivencia y la longevidad de las hembras fueron estimadas por mes para cada localidad. RESULTADOS: Se colectaron 2.062 Culex quinquefasciatus, sin embargo, la densidad mensual del vector no presentó correlación con la temperatura y precipitación. Se diseccionaron los ovarios de 625 Culex quinquefasciatus y se obtuvo mayor proporción de hembras nulíparas durante los meses más secos, mientras que las hembras grávidas fueron más frecuentes en los meses de lluvia. La tasa de paridad alcanzó el 93,75% en la urbanización de clase media, con sobrevivencia de 0,979. Menores valores de paridad y sobrevivencia se obtuvieron en el suburbio (comenzando en 36,4% de paridad y 0,711 de sobrevivencia diaria). El 84,7% de las hembras de Culex quinquefasciatus podrían sobrevivir al período de ocho días, necesario para completar el período de incubación del virus de la fiebre del Oeste del Nilo. CONCLUSIONES: La tasa de sobrevivencia de Culex quinquefasciatus varió significativamente entre las urbanizaciones, sugiriendo que la capacidad vectorial y el riesgo de transmisión de enfermedades pueden variar entre diferentes áreas urbanas, información relevante para la planificación de los programas de control de vectores.OBJETIVO: Avaliar densidade, taxa de paridade, sobrevivência diária e longevidade de populações naturais de Culex quinquefasciatus de três localidades com diferentes perfis socioeconômicos e de infraestrutura. Dissecamos os ovários de 625 Culex quinquefasciatus e obtivemos maior proporção de fêmeas nulíparas durante os meses mais secos, enquanto fêmeas grávidas foram mais frequentes nos meses chuvosos. A taxa de paridade foi de até 93,75% no bairro de classe média, com sobrevivência de 0,979. Menores valores de paridade e sobrevivência foram obtidos no subúrbio (começando em 36,4% de paridade e 0,711 de sobrevivência diária). Até 84,7% das fêmeas de Culex quinquefasciatus poderiam sobreviver ao período de oito dias, necessário para completar o período de incubação do vírus da febre do Nilo Ocidental. CONCLUSÕES: A taxa de sobrevivência de Culex quinquefasciatus variou significativamente entre os bairros, o que sugere que a capacidade vetorial e o risco de transmissão de doenças podem variar entre diferentes áreas urbanas, informação relevante para o planejamento dos programas de controle de vetores

    Different nitrogen sources on the absorption and distribution of phosphorus in corn

    Efeito de doses crescentes de P (0, 10, 20, 40 e 60 ppm) e uma dose única de N (80 ppm), aplicada como N-NO3 ou como N-NH4 mais um inibidor de nitrificação, sobre a acumulação de matéria seca e absorção de N e P por milho (Zea mays L.). Os resultados indicam que a nitrificação foi efetivamente bloqueada, durante o período experimental, pelo uso do inibidor de nitrificação (N-SERVE) a 20 ppm no solo. Houve um efeito positivo de doses crescentes de P sobre a acumulação de matéria seca pelas plantas. Não houve diferenças significativas, na acumulação de matéria seca, entre plantas que receberam N-NO3 e as que receberam N-NH4. Houve, entretanto, uma maior relação "raiz: parte aérea", para as plantas do grupo N-NH4, aos níveis mais elevados de P no solo (40 e 60 ppm). Observou-se um maior acúmulo de N-solúvel (N-amino+ N-NO3) nas plantas que receberam doses menores de P no solo, com o teor de N-amino mais elevado nas plantas do grupo N-NH4, e um teor mais elevado de N-NO3 nas plantas do grupo N-NO3. Houve um maior acúmulo de N na parte aérea do que nas raízes das plantas estudadas (66,8% e 33,18%), enquanto que o acúmulo de P foi maior nas raízes que na parte aérea (61,4% e 38,6%). Os resultados indicam que os teores de P e N dos tecidos não são um indicador seguro do estágio nutricional das plantas em relação a estes elementos.Dry weight and N and P uptake by corn (Zea mays L. var. Centralmex) were compared in greenhouse for soils treated with increasing P-levels (0, 10, 20, 40 and 60 ppm) and a fixed N-level (80 ppm) applied either as NO3 - or as NH4+ plus a nitrification inhibitor. No difference was found in dry matter content between NO3+ and NH4+ treatments but a positive effect was observed with increasing P-levels. Free-N (amino-N + NO3- - N) accummulated in the shoots of plants treated with low levels of P. Amino-N was the free-N main fraction in plants treated with NH4+ whereas NO3- - N was the free-N main fraction in plants treated with NO3-. Nitrogen accummulated more in shoots (66.8%) than in roots (33,18%) while P accummulated more in roots (61.4%) than in shoots (38.6%). At the highest P-levels in soil (40 and 60 ppm) the root/shoot ratio was higher for plants under NH4+ - N than under NO3- - N. Phosphorus and N contents expressed as percentage of dry weight were not good indicators of nutrient status for these nutrients. Free N pool, on the other hand, was very sensitive to low P levels in soil

    Zika Virus Infection Produces a Reduction on Aedes aegypti Lifespan but No Effects on Mosquito Fecundity and Oviposition Success

    A Zika virus (ZIKV) pandemic started soon after the first autochthonous cases in Latin America. Although Aedes aegypti is pointed as the primary vector in Latin America, little is known about the fitness cost due to ZIKV infection. We investigated the effects of ZIKV infection on the life-history traits of Ae. aegypti females collected in three districts of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Barra, Deodoro, and Porto), equidistant ~25 km each other. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes were classified into infected (a single oral challenge with ZIKV) and superinfected (two ZIKV-infected blood meals spaced by 7 days each other). ZIKV infection reduced Ae. aegypti survival in two of the three populations tested, and superinfection produced a sharper increase in mortality in one of those populations. We hypothesized higher mortality with the presence of more ZIKV copies in Ae. aegypti females from Porto. The number of eggs laid per clutch was statistically similar between vector populations and infected and uninfected mosquitoes. Infection by ZIKV not affected female oviposition success. ZIKV infection impacted Ae. aegypti vectorial capacity by reducing its lifespan, although female fecundity remained unaltered. The outcome of these findings to disease transmission intensity still needs further evaluation

    Myc and cell cycle control

    Soon after the discovery of the Myc gene (c-Myc), it became clear thatMyc expression levels tightly correlate to cell proliferation. The entry in cell cycle of quiescent cells upon Myc enforced expression has been described in manymodels. Also, the downregulation or inactivation ofMyc results in the impairment of cell cycle progression. Given the frequent deregulation of Myc oncogene in human cancer it is important to dissect out the mechanisms underlying the role ofMyc on cell cycle control. Several parallel mechanisms account forMyc-mediated stimulation of the cell cycle. First,most of the critical positive cell cycle regulators are encoded by genes induced byMyc. These Myc target genes include Cdks, cyclins and E2F transcription factors. Apart from its direct effects on the transcription, Myc is able to hyperactivate cyclin/Cdk complexes through the induction of Cdk activating kinase (CAK) and Cdc25 phosphatases. Moreover, Myc antagonizes the activity of cell cycle inhibitors as p21 and p27 through different mechanisms. Thus, Myc is able to block p21 transcription or to induce Skp2, a protein involved in p27 degradation. Finally, Myc induces DNA replication by binding to replication origins and by upregulating genes encoding proteins required for replication initiation. Myc also regulates genes involved in the mitotic control. A promising approach to treat tumors with deregulated Myc is the synthetic lethality based on the inhibition of Cdks. Thus, the knowledge of the Myc-dependent cell cycle regulatory mechanisms will help to discover new therapeutic approaches directed against malignancies with deregulated Myc.     A list of land plants of Parque Nacional do Caparaó, Brazil, highlights the presence of sampling gaps within this protected area

    Brazilian protected areas are essential for plant conservation in the Atlantic Forest domain, one of the 36 global biodiversity hotspots. A major challenge for improving conservation actions is to know the plant richness, protected by these areas. Online databases offer an accessible way to build plant species lists and to provide relevant information about biodiversity. A list of land plants of “Parque Nacional do Caparaó” (PNC) was previously built using online databases and published on the website "Catálogo de Plantas das Unidades de Conservação do Brasil." Here, we provide and discuss additional information about plant species richness, endemism and conservation in the PNC that could not be included in the List. We documented 1,791 species of land plants as occurring in PNC, of which 63 are cited as threatened (CR, EN or VU) by the Brazilian National Red List, seven as data deficient (DD) and five as priorities for conservation.     The SuperCam Instrument Suite on the Mars 2020 Rover: Science Objectives and Mast-Unit Description

    On the NASA 2020 rover mission to Jezero crater, the remote determination of the texture, mineralogy and chemistry of rocks is essential to quickly and thoroughly characterize an area and to optimize the selection of samples for return to Earth. As part of the Perseverance payload, SuperCam is a suite of five techniques that provide critical and complementary observations via Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), Time-Resolved Raman and Luminescence (TRR/L), visible and near-infrared spectroscopy (VISIR), high-resolution color imaging (RMI), and acoustic recording (MIC). SuperCam operates at remote distances, primarily 2-7 m, while providing data at sub-mm to mm scales. We report on SuperCam's science objectives in the context of the Mars 2020 mission goals and ways the different techniques can address these questions. The instrument is made up of three separate subsystems: the Mast Unit is designed and built in France; the Body Unit is provided by the United States; the calibration target holder is contributed by Spain, and the targets themselves by the entire science team. This publication focuses on the design, development, and tests of the Mast Unit; companion papers describe the other units. The goal of this work is to provide an understanding of the technical choices made, the constraints that were imposed, and ultimately the validated performance of the flight model as it leaves Earth, and it will serve as the foundation for Mars operations and future processing of the data.In France was provided by the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES).     Altimetry for the future: Building on 25 years of progress

    In 2018 we celebrated 25 years of development of radar altimetry, and the progress achieved by this methodology in the fields of global and coastal oceanography, hydrology, geodesy and cryospheric sciences. Many symbolic major events have celebrated these developments, e.g., in Venice, Italy, the 15th (2006) and 20th (2012) years of progress and more recently, in 2018, in Ponta Delgada, Portugal, 25 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry. On this latter occasion it was decided to collect contributions of scientists, engineers and managers involved in the worldwide altimetry community to depict the state of altimetry and propose recommendations for the altimetry of the future. This paper summarizes contributions and recommendations that were collected and provides guidance for future mission design, research activities, and sustainable operational radar altimetry data exploitation. Recommendations provided are fundamental for optimizing further scientific and operational advances of oceanographic observations by altimetry, including requirements for spatial and temporal resolution of altimetric measurements, their accuracy and continuity. There are also new challenges and new openings mentioned in the paper that are particularly crucial for observations at higher latitudes, for coastal oceanography, for cryospheric studies and for hydrology. The paper starts with a general introduction followed by a section on Earth System Science including Ocean Dynamics, Sea Level, the Coastal Ocean, Hydrology, the Cryosphere and Polar Oceans and the ‘‘Green” Ocean, extending the frontier from biogeochemistry to marine ecology. Applications are described in a subsequent section, which covers Operational Oceanography, Weather, Hurricane Wave and Wind Forecasting, Climate projection. Instruments’ development and satellite missions’ evolutions are described in a fourth section. A fifth section covers the key observations that altimeters provide and their potential complements, from other Earth observation measurements to in situ data. Section 6 identifies the data and methods and provides some accuracy and resolution requirements for the wet tropospheric correction, the orbit and other geodetic requirements, the Mean Sea Surface, Geoid and Mean Dynamic Topography, Calibration and Validation, data accuracy, data access and handling (including the DUACS system). Section 7 brings a transversal view on scales, integration, artificial intelligence, and capacity building (education and training). Section 8 reviews the programmatic issues followed by a conclusion

    Desde a Antiguidade, papagaios, periquitos e afins (Psittacidae) fascinaram os europeus por seu vivo colorido e uma notável capacidade de interação com seres humanos. A descoberta do Novo Mundo nada faria além de acrescentar novos elementos ao tráfico de animais exóticos há muito estabelecido pelos europeus com a África e o Oriente. Sem possuir grandes mamíferos, a América tropical participaria desse comércio com o que tinha de mais atrativo, essencialmente felinos, primatas e aves - em particular os papagaios, os quais eram embarcados em bom número. Contudo, a julgar pelos documentos do Brasil colônia, esses voláteis podiam inspirar muito pouca simpatia, pois nenhum outro animal - exceto as formigas - foi tantas vezes mencionado como praga para a agricultura. Além disso, alguns psitácidas mostravam-se tão loquazes que inspiravam a séria desconfiança de serem animais demoníacos ou possessos, pois só três classes de entidades - anjos, homens e demônios - possuíam o dom da palavra. Nos dias de hoje, vários representantes dos Psittacidae ainda constituem uma ameaça para a agricultura, enquanto os indivíduos muito faladores continuam despertando a suspeita de estarem possuídos pelo demônio. Transcendendo a mera curiosidade, essa crença exemplifica o quão intrincadas podem ser as relações do homem com o chamado “mundo natural”, revelando um universo mais amplo e multifacetado do que se poderia supor a princípio. Nesse sentido, a existência de aves capazes de falar torna essa relação ainda mais complexa e evidencia que as dificuldades de estabelecer o limite entre o animal e o humano se estendem além dos primatas e envolvem as mais inusitadas espécies zoológicas.Since ancient times, parrots and their allies (Psittacidae) have fascinated Europeans by their striking colors and notable ability to interact with human beings. The discovery of the New World added new species to the international exotic animal trade, which for many centuries had brought beasts to Europe from Africa and the Orient. Lacking large mammals, tropical America participated in this trade with its most appealing species, essentially felines, primates and birds - especially parrots - which were shipped in large numbers. It should be noted, however, that at times these birds were not well liked. In fact, according to documents from colonial Brazil, only the ants rank higher than parrots as the animals most often mentioned as agricultural pests. On the other hand, some of these birds were so chatty that people suspected them to be demonic or possessed animals, since only three classes of beings - angels, men and demons - have the ability to speak. Nowadays, several Psittacidae still constitute a threat to agriculture, and the suspicion that extremely talkative birds were demon possessed has also survived. More than a joke or a mere curiosity, this belief exemplifies how intricate man’s relationships with the “natural world” may be. In this sense, the existence of birds that are able to speak adds a further twist to these relationships, demonstrating that the problem of establishing a boundary between the animal and the human does not only involve primates, but also includes some unusual zoological species
