    Limitations of Weighted Sum Measures for Information Quality

    In an age dominated by information, information quality (IQ) is one of the most important factors to consider for obtaining competitive advantages. The general approach to the study of IQ has relied heavily on management approaches, IQ frameworks and dimensions. There are many IQ measures proposed, however dimensions in most frameworks are analyzed and assessed independently. Approaches to aggregate values have been discussed, by which foremost research mostly suggests to estimate the overall quality of information by total all weighted dimension scores. In this paper, we review the suitability of this assessment approach. In our research we focus on IQ dependencies and trade-offs and we aim at demonstrating by means of an experiment that IQ dimensions are dependent. Based on our result of dependent IQ dimensions, we discuss implications for IQ improvement. Further research studies can build on our observations

    Particle acceleration in cooling flow clusters of galaxies: the case of Abell 2626

    It has recently been proposed a theoretical model which accounts for the origin of radio mini-halos observed in some cooling flow clusters as related to electron re-acceleration by MHD turbulence (Gitti, Brunetti & Setti 2002). The MHD turbulence is assumed to be frozen into the flow of the thermal ICM and thus amplified in the cooling flow region. Here we present the application of this model to a new mini-halo candidate, the cluster A2626, and compare the results with those obtained for the mini-halo in the Perseus cluster. We present VLA data at 330 MHz and 1.5 GHz of the diffuse radio emission observed in A2626, and we show that its main properties can be explained by the model. We find that the power necessary for the re-acceleration of the relic electron population is only a factor ~ 0.7% of the maximum power that can be extracted by the cooling flow (as estimated on the basis of the standard model). We also discuss the observational properties of known mini-halos in connection with those of host clusters, showing that the radio power of mini--halos increases with the maximum power of cooling flows. This trend is expected in the framework of the model. Possible effects of new Chandra and XMM-Newton estimates of M˙\dot{M} on this trend are considered: we conclude that even if earlier derived cooling rates were overestimated, cooling flow powers are still well above the radio powers emitted by mini-halos.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Chandra observations of Abell 2199

    We present results from an analysis of two Chandra observations of the rich, nearby galaxy cluster Abell 2199. We find evidence (having corrected for projection effects) for radial gradients in temperature and metallicity in the X-ray emitting gas: the temperature drops from kT~4.2 keV at R=200 kpc to 1.6 keV within R=5 kpc of the centre. The metallicity rises from ~0.3 solar at R=200 kpc to ~0.7 solar at R=30 kpc before dropping to 0.3 solar within the central 5 kpc. We find evidence for structure in the surface brightness distribution associated with the central radio source 3C338. No evidence is found for the gas having a large spread in temperature at any particular location despite the cooling time being short (<10**9yr) within the central ~15 kpc.     Parsec-scale Properties of Brightest Cluster Galaxies

    We present new VLBI observations at 5 GHz of a complete sample of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) in nearby Abell Clusters (distance class <3). Combined with data from the literature, this provides parsec-scale information for 34 BCGs. Our analysis of their parsec scale radio emission and cluster X-ray properties shows a possible dichotomy between BCGs in cool core clusters and those in non cool core clusters. Among resolved sources, those in cool core clusters tend to have two-sided parsec-scale jets, while those in less relaxed clusters have predominantly one-sided parsec-scale jets. We suggest that this difference could be the result of interplay between the jets and the surrounding medium. The one-sided structure in non cool core clusters could be due to Doppler boosting effects in relativistic, intrinsically symmetric jets; two-sided morphology in cool core clusters is likely related to the presence of heavy and mildly relativistic jets slowed down on the parsec-scale.     Searches for Gravitational Waves from Binary Neutron Stars: A Review

    A new generation of observatories is looking for gravitational waves. These waves, emitted by highly relativistic systems, will open a new window for ob- servation of the cosmos when they are detected. Among the most promising sources of gravitational waves for these observatories are compact binaries in the final min- utes before coalescence. In this article, we review in brief interferometric searches for gravitational waves emitted by neutron star binaries, including the theory, instru- mentation and methods. No detections have been made to date.     Magnetic fields in the Centaurus cluster

    We present multi-frequency VLA observations of the radio galaxy PKS 1246-410 at the center of the Centaurus Cluster, and compare these results to recent Chandra observations. The unusual radio morphology of PKS 1246-410 probably results from interactions with the hot, X-ray emitting gas. This gas, along with cluster magnetic fields, also produces substantial Faraday Rotation Measures towards PKS 1246-410. We discuss these observations in the context of a sample of 14 luminous X-ray clusters with embedded radio galaxies and possible cooling flows. A correlation is found between the cooling flow rate and the maximum Faraday Rotation Measures. Magnetic fields of strength 10-40 uG are found to be common to the centers of clusters with strong cooling flows, and somewhat lower field strengths of 2-10 uG are found in the non cooling-flow clusters.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures (3 colour), submitted to MNRA

    Bridge deck flutter derivatives: efficient numerical evaluation exploiting their interdependence

    Increasing the efficiency in the process to numerically compute the flutter derivatives of bridge deck sections is desirable to advance the application of CFD based aerodynamic design in industrial projects. In this article, a 2D unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) approach adopting MenterŚłs SST k-ω turbulence model is employed for computing the flutter derivatives and the static aerodynamic characteristics of two well known examples: a rectangular cylinder showing a completely reattached flow and the generic G1 section representative of streamlined deck sections. The analytical relationships between flutter derivatives reported in the literature are applied with the purpose of halving the number of required numerical simulations for computing the flutter derivatives. The solver of choice has been the open source code OpenFOAM. It has been found that the proposed methodology offers results which agree well with the experimental data and the accuracy of the estimated flutter derivatives is similar to the results reported in the literature where the complete set of numerical simulations has been performed for both heave and pitch degrees of freedom
