BLVector: Fast BLAST-Like Algorithm for Manycore CPU With Vectorization
New High-Performance Computing architectures have been recently developed for commercial central processing unit (CPU). Yet, that has not improved the execution time of widely used bioinformatics applications, like BLAST+. This is due to a lack of optimization between the bases of the existing algorithms and the internals of the hardware that allows taking full advantage of the available CPU cores. To optimize the new architectures, algorithms must be revised and redesigned; usually rewritten from scratch. BLVector adapts the high-level concepts of BLAST+ to the x86 architectures with AVX-512, to harness their capabilities. A deep comprehensive study has been carried out to optimize the approach, with a significant reduction in time execution. BLVector reduces the execution time of BLAST+ when aligning up to mid-size protein sequences (∼750 amino acids). The gain in real scenario cases is 3.2-fold. When applied to longer proteins, BLVector consumes more time than BLAST+, but retrieves a much larger set of results. BLVector and BLAST+ are fine-tuned heuristics. Therefore, the relevant results returned by both are the same, although they behave differently specially when performing alignments with low scores. Realidad aumentada con tecnologías móviles para la preservación del patrimonio cultural
En este trabajo se aborda la difusión de información relativa a puntos de interés geolocalizados mediante las últimas técnicas de realidad aumentada.
En particular, se tratan las 30 reducciones jesuíticas guaraníes que se asentaron en Argentina, Brasil y Paraguay. La información geoespacial y los datos de interés cultural se han fusionado mediante las plataformas OpenStreetMap y Wikipedia, lo que permite su acceso desde cualquier lugar con acceso a internet.
En una segunda fase, estos datos se gestionan desde una aplicación móvil de realidad aumentada y código abierto que permite la inmersión del usuario en el entorno cultural. La metodología desarrollada es fácilmente trasladable a otras disciplinas, lo que abre las puertas a una nueva forma de divulgar in situ la información de interés cultural patrimonial.Sociedad Argentina de Informática e Investigación Operativa (SADIO

virtud
de
lo
anterior,
los
estudiosos
de
las
ciencias
de
la
conducta
de
la
Universidad
Autónoma
del
Estado
de
México,
ante
la
persistencia
y
proliferación
de
estos
hechos
en
diversas
partes
del
Mundo
y
de
nuestro
país
en
particular, se
convocó
a
los
estudiosos
interesados
y
a
la
sociedad
en
general
a
presentar
trabajos
para
analizar,
debatir
y
proponer
estrategias
de
acción
y
dirección,
que
fortalezcan
una
convivencia y bienestar con sentido humanista para una cultura de paz.
El
presente
texto
es
producto
de
esta convocatoria
que
recoge
los
trabajos
de
los
interesados
en
la
temática,
de
diferentes
países
(España,
Argentina,
Cuba,
Brasil,
Costa
Rica
y
México)
retomando
con
ello
sus
experiencias
relativas
al
estudio,
análisis,
comprensión
e
instrumentación
de
la
cultura
de
paz
en
los
distintos
ámbitos
institucionales
en
los
que
participan:
educativo,
salud,
penitenciario,
social,
laboral,
familia,
alimentario,
psicológico,
por
mencionar
algunos.
El
presente
libro,
propicia
un
espacio
de
reflexión,
diálogo
y
posicionamiento
de
las
ciencias
de
la
conducta
para
la
apropiación,
análisis,
debate
y
propuestas
que
fortalezcan
una
cultura
de
paz
a
través
de
la
convivencia
y
el
bienestar
social
con
sentido
humanista.
El
sistema
económico
neoliberal
y
el
proceso
de
globalización
han
contribuido
al
logro
de
avances
significativos
en
la
ciencia
y
la
tecnología,
pero
también
han
propiciado
la
polarización
de
las
sociedades
lo
que
ha
impactado
de
manera
negativa
a
la
sociedad
en
su
conjunto,
pero
en
mayor
medida
a
los grupos
vulnerables. Dicha
polarización
ha
traído
consigo
un
desarrollo
desigual
del
mundo
que
se
expresa
de
diferentes
maneras
tanto
en
países
desarrollados
como
en
los
llamados
del
tercer
mundo,
en
donde
no
están
satisfechas
las
necesidades
humanas
elementales
de
todos
los
sectores
de
la
población,
siempre
falta
algo.
Si
a
esto
le
sumamos
los
conflictos
internacionales por
diferentes
motivos
que
enfrentan
algunas
naciones,
una
insuficiente
cobertura
educativa
y
de
salud,
desempleo
y
pobreza
extrema,
entre
otras
cosas;
estamos
frente
a
retos
de
gran
envergadura
para
los
gobiernos,
para
los
estudiosos
y
para
la
sociedad
civil
en
general. Uno
de
los
intentos
para
frenar
y prevenir
la
agudización
de
estas
problemáticas
es
la
cultura
de
paz,
cuyo
estudio
y propuestas
han
ido
avanzando
en
diferentes
sentidos
y
de
manera
favorable,
el
tema
está
presente
en
diferentes
Organismos
Internacionales
como
la
ONU,
la
UNESCO,
la
OCDE,
El
Banco
Mundial,
entre
otros.

Treatment with tocilizumab or corticosteroids for COVID-19 patients with hyperinflammatory state: a multicentre cohort study (SAM-COVID-19)
Objectives: The objective of this study was to estimate the association between tocilizumab or corticosteroids and the risk of intubation or death in patients with coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) with a hyperinflammatory state according to clinical and laboratory parameters.
Methods: A cohort study was performed in 60 Spanish hospitals including 778 patients with COVID-19 and clinical and laboratory data indicative of a hyperinflammatory state. Treatment was mainly with tocilizumab, an intermediate-high dose of corticosteroids (IHDC), a pulse dose of corticosteroids (PDC), combination therapy, or no treatment. Primary outcome was intubation or death; follow-up was 21 days. Propensity score-adjusted estimations using Cox regression (logistic regression if needed) were calculated. Propensity scores were used as confounders, matching variables and for the inverse probability of treatment weights (IPTWs).
Results: In all, 88, 117, 78 and 151 patients treated with tocilizumab, IHDC, PDC, and combination therapy, respectively, were compared with 344 untreated patients. The primary endpoint occurred in 10 (11.4%), 27 (23.1%), 12 (15.4%), 40 (25.6%) and 69 (21.1%), respectively. The IPTW-based hazard ratios (odds ratio for combination therapy) for the primary endpoint were 0.32 (95%CI 0.22-0.47; p < 0.001) for tocilizumab, 0.82 (0.71-1.30; p 0.82) for IHDC, 0.61 (0.43-0.86; p 0.006) for PDC, and 1.17 (0.86-1.58; p 0.30) for combination therapy. Other applications of the propensity score provided similar results, but were not significant for PDC. Tocilizumab was also associated with lower hazard of death alone in IPTW analysis (0.07; 0.02-0.17; p < 0.001).
Conclusions: Tocilizumab might be useful in COVID-19 patients with a hyperinflammatory state and should be prioritized for randomized trials in this situatio
Arquitectura Epiphany III. Una primera toma de contacto
En este trabajo se aborda el análisis de las características hardware,
rendimiento y eficiencia del chip E16G301 incorporado en la placa Parallella
Board. Este chip es un procesador que integra 16 núcleos RISC cuya memoria
se encuentra mapeada en la del ordenador host que la aloja. Actualmente su
programación resulta demasiado artesanal y limitada, lo que complica los
desarrollos y fuerza a invertir un gran esfuerzo para obtener un rendimiento
razonable. A pesar de ello, se demuestra que desarrollo simplificado de un
algoritmo de cálculo intensivo (el algoritmo Smith-Waterman, usado en
Bioinformática) permite obtener un rendimiento por núcleo bastante aceptable.
Para ilustrar este aspecto, se proporciona una comparativa con la misma
implementación en otras dos plataformas many-core (Tile64 e Intel Xeon-Phi)

Comparative structural analysis of the drought responsive dehydrin and aquaporin gene families in Brachypodium and close grasses
Dehydrins (DHNs) belong to the group 2 LEA (Late Embryogenesis Abundant) genes and play an important role in the response of plants to abiotic stress, mainly heat, salinity and drought. Under these stresses, DHNs accumulate to a large extent in maturing seeds and in all vegetative tissues. As many studies reveal, there is a positive correlation between DHN gene expression (synthesis of DHN proteins) and plant stress tolerance. Aquaporins (AQPs) belong to the major intrinsic protein (MIP) superfamily of membrane proteins conserved in plants and animals as well as in bacteria. Supporting evidence suggests that AQPs have an important role in stomatal closure and circadian regulation. There are more than 150 MIPs identified and, although some of them are constitutively expressed, others are regulated in response to drought and salinity.
In this study, sequence and annotation data has been retrieved from Phytozome and Ensembl Plants in order to compare DHNs and AQPs in four Brachypodium species, 54 B. distachyon varieties and five cereals (Zea mays, Sorghum bicolor, Oryza sativa, Hordeum vulgare and Triticum aestivum).
In the B. distachyon intra-species comparison, drought tolerant lines seem to contain slightly lower numbers of aquaporin and dehydrin genes, they are shorter, and some of them are dissimilar to those of the rest. The physical distribution of AQPs includes a cluster of genes that splits the lines into two main groups depending on its location, either in chromosome 3 or in chromosome 4 of this species. Comparative Genomics, Evolution, and Drought-Induced Expression of Dehydrin Genes in Model Brachypodium Grasses
Dehydration proteins (dehydrins, DHNs) confer tolerance to water-stress deficit in plants. We performed a comparative genomics and evolutionary study of DHN genes in four model Brachypodium grass species. Due to limited knowledge on dehydrin expression under water deprivation stress in Brachypodium, we also performed a drought-induced gene expression analysis in 32 ecotypes of the genus’ flagship species B. distachyon showing different hydric requirements. Genomic sequence analysis detected 10 types of dehydrin genes (Bdhn) across the Brachypodium species. Domain and conserved motif contents of peptides encoded by Bdhn genes revealed eight protein architectures. Bdhn genes were spread across several chromosomes. Selection analysis indicated that all the Bdhn genes were constrained by purifying selection. Three upstream cis-regulatory motifs (BES1, MYB124, ZAT) were detected in several Bdhn genes. Gene expression analysis demonstrated that only four Bdhn1-Bdhn2, Bdhn3, and Bdhn7 genes, orthologs of wheat, barley, rice, sorghum, and maize genes, were expressed in mature leaves of B. distachyon and that all of them were more highly expressed in plants under drought conditions. Brachypodium dehydrin expression was significantly correlated with drought-response phenotypic traits (plant biomass, leaf carbon and proline contents and water use efficiency increases, and leaf water and nitrogen content decreases) being more pronounced in drought-tolerant ecotypes. Our results indicate that dehydrin type and regulation could be a key factor determining the acquisition of water-stress tolerance in grasses
Transferal Skills in Applied Artificial Intelligence – The Case of Financial Sector
Artificial Intelligence (AI) can potentially transform many aspects of modern society in various ways, including automation of tasks, personalization of products and services, diagnosis of diseases and their treatment, transportation, safety, and security in public spaces, etc. Recently, AI technology has been transforming the financial industry, offering new ways to analyse data and automate processes, reduce costs, increase efficiency, and provide more personalized services to customers. However, it also raised important ethical and regulatory questions that need to be addressed by the industry and society as a whole. The aim of the Erasmus+ project Transversal Skills in Applied Artificial Intelligence - TSAAI (KA220-HED - Cooperation Partnerships in higher education) has been to establish a training platform that will incorporate teaching guidelines based on a curriculum covering different areas of application of AI technology. Transversal skills in applied Artificial Intelligence - the case of the financial sector
Different aspects of modern society can be transformed by the deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI-powered tools have promoted changes in the financial industry by applying inventive methods for data analysis and automating processes, efficiency enhancement, cost reduction and more personalised services to customers. However, AI algorithms may activate significant ethical and regulatory concerns that should be addressed by the industry and society as a whole. In line with the Erasmus+ project Transversal Skills in Applied Artificial Intelligence - TSAAI (KA220-HED - Cooperation Partnerships in higher education), which aims to establish a training platform, this paper focuses on an analysis of study programmes in formal tertiary education across consortium countries (Spain, Estonia, North Macedonia, Croatia, Germany, and Slovenia) with a special focus on applied artificial intelligence and development of curriculum that will integrate teaching guidelines covering the areas of application of AI technology in the financial and insurance sectors. To this end, a Systematic Review of Literacy (SRL) on the web methodology identifying the existing employability requirements in AI and the Learning-Centred Syllabus (LCS) methodology for curriculum development was applied, with the presented curriculum expected to serve as a framework to develop teaching materials to help students, academics and employees enhance their professional skills, thus satisfying labour market needs
