Natural history of Belonuchus Nordmann spp. and allies (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) in Heliconia L. (Zingiberales: Heliconiaceae) flower bracts

Adults, and in some species larvae, of several members of Belonuchus Nordmann (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Staphylininae) and a few related genera seem to be to various degrees consistently associated with flower bracts of the genus Heliconia (Zingiberales: Heliconiaceae). They are predators and eat various dipterous and lepidopterous larvae in that habitat. Adults of at least Belonuchus cephalotes (Sharp) and Odontolinus fasciatus Sharp are able to immerse completely in water to capture larvae and/or pupae of mosquitoes (Culicidae). Adults and larvae of Belonuchus satyrus Erichson, and adults of B. cacao Blackwelder and B. rufipennis (F.) were found in water-filled flower bracts of Heliconia bihai (L.) L. in northern, lowland Venezuela. The bracts also contained mosquito larvae and semiaquatic coleopterous (Chrysomelidae: Hispinae), lepidopterous (Crambidae: Pyraustinae) and dipterous (Syrphidae, Stratiomyidae, Psychodidae, Richardiidae) larvae, and Annelida. In feeding trials, B. satyrus adults and larvae did not feed on hispine larvae or annelids, but did feed on all the lepidopterous and dipterous larvae available to them; adults dragged larvae and pupae of the mosquito genus Toxorhynchites Theobald from shallow water and thus seemed to be the top predators of the food pyramid within bracts. Records are compiled of association of Belonuchus and relatives with Heliconia bracts in the neotropics. We correct the names used for Heliconia spp. by earlier entomological authors working in Venezuela. Their ‘Heliconia caribaea Lamarck’ is H. bihai (L.) L. and their ‘H. aurea Rodríguez’ is H. bihai cv. Estos coleópteros son depredadores y comen larvas de varios tipos de dípteros y lepidópteros en ese hábitat. Los adultos de Belonuchus cephalotes (Sharp) y Odontolinus fasciatus Sharp pueden sumergirse completamente en el agua para capturar las larvas y pupas de mosquitos (Culicidae). Larvas y adultos de Belonuchus satyrus Erichson, así como adultos de B. cacao Blackwelder y B. rufipennis (F.) fueron encontrados en las brácteas florales de Heliconia bihai (L.) L. de las partes bajas del norte de Venezuela. Las brácteas también contenían larvas de mosquitos y coleópteros semi-acuáticos (Chrysomelidae: Hispinae), larvas de lepidópteros (Crambidae: Pyraustinae) y de dípteros (Syrphidae, Stratiomyidae, Psychodidae, Richardiidae), y anélidos. En experimentos de alimentación, las larvas y los adultos de B. satyrus no se alimentaron de larvas de Hispinae ni de anélidos, sin embargo todas las larvas de lepidópteros y de dípteros que se les ofrecieron fueron ingeridas; los adultos de B. satyrus también extraen larvas de mosquitos del género Toxorhynchites Theobald del agua, por lo cual parecen ser los depredadores del tope de la pirámide alimentaria en las brácteas. Los registros de asociaciones de Belonuchus y géneros afines con las brácteas de Heliconia en el Neotrópico fueron recopiladas. Corregimos los nombres de Heliconia spp.utilizados anteriormente por entomólogos que trabajaron en Venezuela. Su ‘Heliconia caribaea Lamarck’ corresponde a H. bihai (L.) L. y su ‘H. aurea Rodríguez’ corresponde a H. bihai cv. Aurea

Optimization of the functional properties of a drink based on tubers of purple mashua (Tropaeolum tuberosum Ruíz y Pavón)

This work optimized the temperature and time of pasteurization of purple mashua (Tropaeolum tuberosum Ruíz and Pavón) tubers drink based on its antioxidant capacity, total phenolics, total flavonoids, anthocyanins content, and acceptability. For this, purple mashua tubers from the province of Acobamba-Huancavelica-Peru were weighed, washed, peeled, cut and placed in a juice extractor. The beverage of tubers was prepared using the juice of tubers, the thermal treatment of the samples was carried out at temperatures between 75 to 85 °C and time 10 to 25 min. The design was planned using a Rotational Composite Central Design and a response surface analysis was performed on the samples obtained. The content of total phenolics, anthocyanins, total flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity was influenced by the time and temperature of pasteurization. At higher temperatures and pasteurization times there was a reduction in the content of total phenolics, anthocyanins, total flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity. The greatest general acceptability of the panelists was at high pasteurization temperatures and times. The temperature of 77 °C and time of 13 minutes showed the maximum value of response variables with low degradation of the antioxidant compounds and good acceptability of mashua extract drinks

Trabajo de titulación previo a la obtención del título de Arquitecto Urbanista

El presente trabajo de titulación tiene como propósito establecer la situación actual del “Recinto Ferial Municipal” de la Ciudad del Puyo, debido a la necesidad que representa para la ciudad y la provincia, lograr conservar un equipamiento promotor de intercambio comercial y socio cultural, de esta manera se plantea una propuesta de rediseño arquitectónico de las instalaciones del actual recinto ferial, recibiendo alrededor de 55 mil visitantes por año. Se analiza la problemática existente, como es la incompatibilidad de usos de suelo entre: zonas residenciales, comerciales, recreativas, feriales y de faenamiento en este sector; así como el desatinado funcionamiento del Camal Municipal ubicado dentro del mismo predio del Recinto Ferial. La información recopilada se la desarrollo en el lugar, donde la población considerada es parte de los sujetos de estudio a quienes se les aplica una entrevista, dichos sujetos están directamente ligados con el funcionamiento del Recinto manteniendo conocimientos técnicos del mismo, por medio de un levantamiento fotográfico, se generan fichas de observación con indicadores cualitativos los cuales manifiestan los diversos problemas que el lugar mantiene como: su deficiente accesibilidad, el mal estado de su infraestructura y mampostería, espacios subutilizados, inadecuado manejo del paisaje, contaminación ambiental entre otros. Así mismo, se estudió el estado del entorno inmediato, usos de suelo, topografía, clima, permitiendo dar solución de una forma técnica y con criterios formales basado en la cultura indígena local. Todo esto da paso a que productores, comercios y emprendimientos sean parte de este importante hito comercial dentro de la ciudad del Puyo mostrándose como vitrina comercial de la provincia y la región

The C-terminal domain of Fcj1 is required for formation of crista junctions and interacts with the TOB/SAM complex in mitochondria

Crista junctions (CJs) are tubular invaginations of the inner membrane of mitochondria that connect the inner boundary with the cristae membrane. These architectural elements are critical for mitochondrial function. The yeast inner membrane protein Fcj1, called mitofilin in mammals, was reported to be preferentially located at CJs and crucial for their formation. Here we investigate the functional roles of individual domains of Fcj1. The most conserved part of Fcj1, the C-terminal domain, is essential for Fcj1 function. In its absence, formation of CJ is strongly impaired and irregular, and stacked cristae are present. This domain interacts with full-length Fcj1, suggesting a role in oligomer formation. It also interacts with Tob55 of the translocase of outer membrane β-barrel proteins (TOB)/sorting and assembly machinery (SAM) complex, which is required for the insertion of β-barrel proteins into the outer membrane. The association of the TOB/SAM complex with contact sites depends on the presence of Fcj1. The biogenesis of β-barrel proteins is not significantly affected in the absence of Fcj1. However, down-regulation of the TOB/SAM complex leads to altered cristae morphology and a moderate reduction in the number of CJs. We propose that the C-terminal domain of Fcj1 is critical for the interaction of Fcj1 with the TOB/SAM complex and thereby for stabilizing CJs in close proximity to the outer membrane. These results assign novel functions to both the C-terminal domain of Fcj1 and the TOB/SAM complex

Estudio definitivo de la carretera Congona – Miraflores – Quirichima – El Sauce, distrito de Cañarís, provincia de Ferreñafe, región Lambayeque.

El proyecto titulado “Estudio Definitivo de la Carretera Congona – Miraflores – Quirichima – el sauce, distrito de cañarís, provincia de Ferreñafe, región Lambayeque”, brindará una alternativa de solución a la condición actual de la carretera. Consiste en un tramo de apertura y otro de mejoramiento, proponiendo la construcción de una superficie vial pavimentada a nivel de afirmado, para que cuenten con un servicio de transitabilidad directa, que ayude al desarrollo socioeconómico. Para tal fin se han realizado estudios necesarios que ayuden a determinar las características del diseño del pavimento, tales como la demanda vehicular, la topografía existente en la zona de estudio y las características de los suelos en los que se apoyará el pavimento proyectado; con el objetivo de proponer un óptimo diseño geométrico que cumpla con las exigencias requeridas. Se ha realizado una evaluación de impacto ambiental producido durante la etapa constructiva con la finalidad de mitigar impactos negativos, estableciendo medidas preventivas y correctivas

Campanian-Maastrichtian ocean circulation in the tropical Pacific

The Pacific Ocean is the largest water body on Earth, and circulation in the Pacific contributed significantly to climate evolution in the latest Cretaceous, the culmination of a period of long-term cooling. Here, we present new high-resolution late Campanian to Maastrichtian benthic and planktic foraminiferal stable isotope data and a neodymium (Nd) isotope record obtained from sedimentary ferromanganese oxide coatings of Ocean Drilling Program Hole 1210B from the tropical Pacific Ocean (Shatsky Rise). These new records resolve 13 million years in the latest Cretaceous, providing insights into changes in surface and bottom water temperatures and source regions of deep to intermediate waters covering the carbon isotope excursions of the Campanian-Maastrichtian Boundary Event (CMBE) and the Mid-Maastrichtian event (MME). Our new benthic foraminiferal δ18O and Nd isotope records together with published Nd isotope data show markedly parallel trends across the studied interval over a broad range of bathyal to abyssal water depths interpreted to reflect changes in the intensity of deep-ocean circulation in the tropical Pacific. In particular, we observe a three-million-year-long period of cooler conditions in the early Maastrichtian (72.5 to 69.5 Ma) when a concomitant change toward less radiogenic seawater Nd isotope signatures probably marks a period of enhanced admixture and northward flow of deep waters with Southern Ocean provenance. We suggest this change to have been triggered by intensified formation and convection of deep waters in the high southern latitudes, a process that weakened during the MME (69.5 to 68.5 Ma). The early Maastrichtian cold interval is closely related to the negative and positive carbon isotope trends of the CMBE and MME. The millions-of-years long duration of these carbon cycle perturbations suggests a tectonic forcing of climatic cooling, possibly related to changes in ocean basin geometry and bathymetry

Automatic segmentation of a meningioma using a computational technique in magnetic resonance imaging

Through this work we propose a computational techniquefor the segmentation of a brain tumor, identified as meningioma(MGT), which is present in magnetic resonance images(MRI). This technique consists of 3 stages developed inthe three-dimensional domain: pre-processing, segmentationand post-processing. The percent relative error (PrE) is consideredto compare the segmentations of the MGT, generatedby a neuro-oncologist manually, with the dilated segmentationsof the MGT, obtained automatically. The combination ofparameters linked to the lowest PrE, provides the optimal parametersof each computational algorithm that makes up theproposed computational technique. Results allow reporting aPrE of 1.44%, showing an excellent correlation between themanual segmentations and those produced by the computationaltechnique developed

Negative Thermal Expansion Coefficient of Graphene Measured by Raman Spectroscopy

The thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of single-layer graphene is estimated with temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy in the temperature range between 200 and 400 K. It is found to be strongly dependent on temperature but remains negative in the whole temperature range, with a room temperature value of -8.0x10^{-6} K^{-1}.
