Vanishing Minors in the Neutrino Mass Matrix from Abelian Gauge Symmetries
Augmenting the Standard Model by three right-handed neutrinos allows for an
anomaly-free gauge group extension G_max = U(1)_(B-L) x U(1)_(L_e-L_mu) x
U(1)_(L_mu-L_tau). While simple U(1) subgroups of G_max have already been
discussed in the context of approximate flavor symmetries, we show how two-zero
textures in the right-handed neutrino Majorana mass matrix can be enforced by
the flavor symmetry, which is spontaneously broken very economically by singlet
scalars. These zeros lead to two vanishing minors in the low-energy neutrino
mass matrix after the seesaw mechanism. This study may provide a new testing
ground for a zero-texture approach: the different classes of two-zero textures
with almost identical neutrino oscillation phenomenology can in principle be

âAm I also going to die, doctor?â A systematic review of the impact of in-hospital patients witnessing a resuscitation of another patient
Background: There is a growing interest in the impact of family-witnessed resuscitation. However, evidence about the effect of hospitalised patients witnessing other patients' resuscitations is limited. Aim: The aim of this systematic review is to explore the existing evidence related to the impact on patients who witness resuscitation attempts on other patients in hospital settings. Methods: The databases BNI, CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE and PsycINFO were searched with the terms 'patient', 'inpatient', 'resuscitation', 'CPR', 'cardiopulmonary resuscitation' and 'witness'. The search strategy excluded the terms 'out-of-hospital', 'family' and 'relative'. The inclusion criteria were: studies related to patients exposed to a resuscitation attempt performed on another patient; quantitative and qualitative design; and physiological or psychological outcome measures. No limitations of date, language or settings were applied. Results: Five of the 540 identified studies were included: two observational studies with control groups and three qualitative studies with interviews and focus groups. Articles were published between 1968 and 2006 and were mostly rated to have a low quality of evidence. Quantitative results of the observational studies showed an increased heart rate in the study group witnessing a resuscitation (p = 0.05), increased systolic blood pressure (p < 0.01) and increased anxiety (p < 0.01). The qualitative studies highlighted the coping strategies adopted by exposed patients in response to witnessing resuscitation, including denial and dissociation. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that patients may find witnessing resuscitation to be a stressful experience. However, the evidence is sparse and mainly of poor quality. Further research is needed in order to better understand the impacts of patients witnessing a resuscitation of another patient and to identify effective support systems. The Interplay Between GUT and Flavour Symmetries in a Pati-Salam x S4 Model
Both Grand Unified symmetries and discrete flavour symmetries are appealing
ways to describe apparent structures in the gauge and flavour sectors of the
Standard Model. Both symmetries put constraints on the high energy behaviour of
the theory. This can give rise to unexpected interplay when building models
that possess both symmetries. We investigate on the possibility to combine a
Pati-Salam model with the discrete flavour symmetry that gives rise to
quark-lepton complementarity. Under appropriate assumptions at the GUT scale,
the model reproduces fermion masses and mixings both in the quark and in the
lepton sectors. We show that in particular the Higgs sector and the running
Yukawa couplings are strongly affected by the combined constraints of the Grand
Unified and family symmetries. This in turn reduces the phenomenologically
viable parameter space, with high energy mass scales confined to a small region
and some parameters in the neutrino sector slightly unnatural. In the allowed
regions, we can reproduce the quark masses and the CKM matrix. In the lepton
sector, we reproduce the charged lepton masses, including bottom-tau
unification and the Georgi-Jarlskog relation as well as the two known angles of
the PMNS matrix. The neutrino mass spectrum can present a normal or an inverse
hierarchy, and only allowing the neutrino parameters to spread into a range of
values between and , with .
Finally, our model suggests that the reactor mixing angle is close to its

Chiral matter wavefunctions in warped compactifications
We analyze the wavefunctions for open strings stretching between intersecting
7-branes in type IIB/F-theory warped compactifications, as a first step in
understanding the warped effective field theory of 4d chiral fermions. While in
general the equations of motion do not seem to admit a simple analytic
solution, we provide a method for solving the wavefunctions in the case of weak
warping. The method describes warped zero modes as a perturbative expansion in
the unwarped spectrum, the coefficients of the expansion depending on the
warping. We perform our analysis with and without the presence of worldvolume
fluxes, illustrating the procedure with some examples. Finally, we comment on

Long-Term Exposure to Ambient Air Pollution and Mortality Due to Cardiovascular Disease and Cerebrovascular Disease in Shenyang, China
BACKGROUND: The relationship between ambient air pollution exposure and mortality of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in human is controversial, and there is little information about how exposures to ambient air pollution contribution to the mortality of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases among Chinese. The aim of the present study was to examine whether exposure to ambient-air pollution increases the risk for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study among humans to examine the association between compound-air pollutants [particulate matter <10 Âľm in aerodynamic diameter (PM(10)), sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) and nitrogen dioxide (NO(2))] and mortality in Shenyang, China, using 12 years of data (1998-2009). Also, stratified analysis by sex, age, education, and income was conducted for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular mortality. The results showed that an increase of 10 Âľg/m(3) in a year average concentration of PM(10) corresponds to 55% increase in the risk of a death cardiovascular disease (hazard ratio [HR], 1.55; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.51 to 1.60) and 49% increase in cerebrovascular disease (HR, 1.49; 95% CI, 1.45 to 1.53), respectively. The corresponding figures of adjusted HR (95%CI) for a 10 Âľg/m(3) increase in NO(2) was 2.46 (2.31 to 2.63) for cardiovascular mortality and 2.44 (2.27 to 2.62) for cerebrovascular mortality, respectively. The effects of air pollution were more evident in female that in male, and nonsmokers and residents with BMI<18.5 were more vulnerable to outdoor air pollution. CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE: Long-term exposure to ambient air pollution is associated with the death of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases among Chinese populations
Loss of heterozygosity as a marker of homologous repair deficiency in multiple myeloma: a role for PARP inhibition?
PARP inhibitors can induce synthetic lethality in tumors characterized by homologous recombination deficiency (HRD), which can be detected by evaluating genome-wide loss of heterozygosity (LOH). Multiple myeloma (MM) is a genetically unstable tumor and we hypothesized that HRD-related LOH (HRD-LOH) could be detected in patient samples, supporting a potential role for PARP inhibition in MM. Using results from targeted next-generation sequencing studies (FoundationOneÂŽ Heme), we analyzed HRD-LOH in patients at all disease stages (MGUS (nâ=â7), smoldering MM (SMM, nâ=â30), newly diagnosed MM (NDMM, nâ=â71), treated MM (TRMM, nâ=â64), and relapsed MM (RLMM, nâ=â234)) using an algorithm to identify HRD-LOH segments. We demonstrated HRD-LOH in MM samples, increasing as disease progresses. The extent of genomic HRD-LOH correlated with high-risk disease markers. Outcome of RLMM patients, the biggest clinical group, was analyzed and patients with HRD-LOH above the third quartile (âĽ5% HRD-LOH) had significantly worse progression-free and overall survival than those with lower levels (pâ<â0.001). Mutations in key homologous recombination genes account for some, but not all, of the cases with an excess of HRD-LOH. These data support the further evaluation of PARP inhibitors in MM patients, particularly in the relapsed setting with a high unmet need for new treatments
Common variation near CDKN1A, POLD3 and SHROOM2 influences colorectal cancer risk
We performed a meta-analysis of five genome-wide association studies to identify common variants influencing colorectal cancer (CRC) risk comprising 8,682 cases and 9,649 controls. Replication analysis was performed in case-control sets totaling 21,096 cases and 19,555 controls. We identified three new CRC risk loci at 6p21 (rs1321311, near CDKN1A; P = 1.14 Ă 10(-10)), 11q13.4 (rs3824999, intronic to POLD3; P = 3.65 Ă 10(-10)) and Xp22.2 (rs5934683, near SHROOM2; P = 7.30 Ă 10(-10)) This brings the number of independent loci associated with CRC risk to 20 and provides further insight into the genetic architecture of inherited susceptibility to CRC.Swedish Research Council et al.Manuscrip
Resident and family perceptions of the nurse practitioner role in long term care settings: a qualitative descriptive study
BackgroundResearch evidence supports the positive impact on resident outcomes of nurse practitioners (NPs) working in long term care (LTC) homes. There are few studies that report the perceptions of residents and family members about the role of the NP in these settings. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of residents and family members regarding the role of the NP in LTC homes.MethodsThe study applied a qualitative descriptive approach. In-depth individual and focus group interviews were conducted with 35 residents and family members from four LTC settings that employed a NP. Conventional content analysis was used to identify themes and sub-themes.ResultsTwo major themes were identified: NPs were seen as providing resident and family-centred care and as providing enhanced quality of care. NPs established caring relationships with residents and families, providing both informational and emotional support, as well as facilitating their participation in decision making. Residents and families perceived the NP as improving availability and timeliness of care and helping to prevent unnecessary hospitalization.ConclusionsThe perceptions of residents and family members of the NP role in LTC are consistent with the concepts of person-centred and relationship-centred care. The relationships NPs develop with residents and families are a central means through which enhanced quality of care occurs. Given the limited use of NPs in LTC settings, there is an opportunity for health care policy and decision makers to address service inadequacies through strategic deployment of NPs in LTC settings. NPs can use their expert knowledge and skill to assist residents and families to make informed choices regarding their health care and maintain a positive care experience
Search for narrow resonances and quantum black holes in inclusive and b-tagged dijet mass spectra from pp collisions at âs=7 TeV

The official published version of the Article can be accessed from the links below - Copyright @ 2013 Springer-Verlag.A search for narrow resonances and quantum black holes is performed in inclusive and b-tagged dijet mass spectra measured with the CMS detector at the LHC. The data set corresponds to 5 fbâ1 of integrated luminosity collected in pp collisions at âs=7 TeV. No narrow resonances or quantum black holes are observed. Model-independent upper limits at the 95% confidence level are obtained on the product of the cross section, branching fraction into dijets, and acceptance for three scenarios: decay into quark-quark, quark-gluon, and gluon-gluon pairs. Specific lower limits are set on the mass of string resonances (4.31 TeV), excited quarks (3.32 TeV), axigluons and colorons (3.36 TeV), scalar color-octet resonances (2.07 TeV), E6 diquarks (3.75 TeV), and on the masses of WⲠ(1.92 TeV) and ZⲠ(1.47 TeV) bosons. The limits on the minimum mass of quantum black holes range from 4 to 5.3 TeV.
