Fil: Forster, Ricardo.

    Get PDF
This paper is intended to show that a proposal (Grodzinsky & Friederici 2006) on dissociation between two types of movement (MOVEXP and MOVEV) is not supported by a critical review of data found in the literature of studies dealing with agrammatic aphasia. This procedure is considered to be of fundamental relevance for studies that plan to use evidence derived from studies based on linguistic aphasiology, since this field exhibits some problematic aspects concerning data analysis. Some conclusions reviewed here, thought to be straightforward, are, indeed, subject to questioning. In other cases, there are contradictory results that are commonly ignored in the construction of hypotheses. It is offered, then, a new posture on the consideration of the validity of studies that focus on aphasic syndromes within a linguistic framework

Measurement of the separation dependence of resonant energy transfer between CdSe/ZnS core/shell nanocrystallite quantum dots

The separation dependence of the interaction between two resonant groups of CdSe/ZnS nanocrystallite quantum dots is studied at room temperature. A near-field scanning optical microscope is used to bring a group of mono-disperse ~6.5 nm diameter nanocrystallite quantum dots which are attached to the microscope probe, into close proximity of `~8.5 nm diameter group of nanocrystallite quantum dots which are deposited on a solid immersion lens. Information extracted from photoluminescence, photoluminescence excitation and absorption curves as well as numerical calculations of the energy levels, show that the third excited excitonic energy level of the large quantum dots nearly matches the ground excitonic energy level for the small quantum dots. Quenching of the small quantum dots photoluminescence signal has been observed as they approach the large quantum dots. On average, the separation between microscope probe and solid immersion lens changed in the 15-50 nm range. The transition probability between these two groups of quantum dots is calculated to be (2.60 x 10-47 m6)/R6, within the (0.70 x 10-47 m6)/R6 - (11.0 x 10-47 m6)/R6 experimentally obtained range of transition probabilities. The F\"orster radius, as a signature of energy transfer efficiency, is experimentally found to be in the 14-22 nm range.Comment: 8 pages-8 figures Accepted Physical Review B 201

A novel satellite mission concept for upper air water vapour, aerosol and cloud observations using integrated path differential absorption LiDAR limb sounding

    Get PDF
We propose a new satellite mission to deliver high quality measurements of upper air water vapour. The concept centres around a LiDAR in limb sounding by occultation geometry, designed to operate as a very long path system for differential absorption measurements. We present a preliminary performance analysis with a system sized to send 75 mJ pulses at 25 Hz at four wavelengths close to 935 nm, to up to 5 microsatellites in a counter-rotating orbit, carrying retroreflectors characterized by a reflected beam divergence of roughly twice the emitted laser beam divergence of 15 µrad. This provides water vapour profiles with a vertical sampling of 110 m; preliminary calculations suggest that the system could detect concentrations of less than 5 ppm. A secondary payload of a fairly conventional medium resolution multispectral radiometer allows wide-swath cloud and aerosol imaging. The total weight and power of the system are estimated at 3 tons and 2,700 W respectively. This novel concept presents significant challenges, including the performance of the lasers in space, the tracking between the main spacecraft and the retroreflectors, the refractive effects of turbulence, and the design of the telescopes to achieve a high signal-to-noise ratio for the high precision measurements. The mission concept was conceived at the Alpbach Summer School 2010

Correspondences in Arakelov geometry and applications to the case of Hecke operators on modular curves

In the context of arithmetic surfaces, Bost defined a generalized Arithmetic Chow Group (ACG) using the Sobolev space L^2_1. We study the behavior of these groups under pull-back and push-forward and we prove a projection formula. We use these results to define an action of the Hecke operators on the ACG of modular curves and to show that they are self-adjoint with respect to the arithmetic intersection product. The decomposition of the ACG in eigencomponents which follows allows us to define new numerical invariants, which are refined versions of the self-intersection of the dualizing sheaf. Using the Gross-Zagier formula and a calculation due independently to Bost and Kuehn we compute these invariants in terms of special values of L series. On the other hand, we obtain a proof of the fact that Hecke correspondences acting on the Jacobian of the modular curves are self-adjoint with respect to the N\'eron-Tate height pairing.Comment: 38 pages. MLOps as enabler of trustworthy AI

    Get PDF
As Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems are becoming ever more capable of performing complex tasks, their prevalence in industry, as well as society, is increasing rapidly. Adoption of AI systems requires humans to trust them, leading to the concept of trustworthy AI which covers principles such as fairness, reliability, explainability, or safety. Implementing AI in a trustworthy way is encouraged by newly developed industry norms and standards, and will soon be enforced by legislation such as the EU AI Act (EU AIA). We argue that Machine Learning Operations (MLOps), a paradigm which covers best practices and tools to develop and maintain AI and Machine Learning (ML) systems in production reliably and efficiently, provides a guide to implementing trustworthiness into the AI development and operation lifecycle. In addition, we present an implementation of a framework based on various MLOps tools which enables verification of trustworthiness principles using the example of a computer vision ML model

Towards the certification of AI-based systems

Certifying the trustworthiness of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based systems based on dimensions including reliability and transparency is crucial given their increased uptake. Likewise, as regulatory requirements are established, actionable guidelines for certification will be useful for developers and certification bodies to ensure trustworthiness of AI. Here, we present an ongoing effort to develop a validated AI certification scheme which is a framework for assessing the trustworthiness of AI systems including specific objectives with their corresponding means of compliance (i.e. process, documentation or technical methods). Importantly, the scheme makes an explicit link between legal requirements and validated techniques for assessing the compliance of AI systems, resulting in the implementation of a workflow to support AI certification. We explain the rationale for developing the certification scheme and demonstrate the assessment of an example use case with a concrete workflow traversing from objectives to corresponding means, focused on reliability and transparency

Automatic Categorization for Improving Spanish into Spanish Sign Language Machine Translation

This paper describes a preprocessing module for improving the performance of a Spanish into Spanish Sign Language (Lengua de Signos Espanola: LSE) translation system when dealing with sparse training data. This preprocessing module replaces Spanish words with associated tags. The list with Spanish words (vocabulary) and associated tags used by this module is computed automatically considering those signs that show the highest probability of being the translation of every Spanish word. This automatic tag extraction has been compared to a manual strategy achieving almost the same improvement. In this analysis, several alternatives for dealing with non-relevant words have been studied. Non-relevant words are Spanish words not assigned to any sign. The preprocessing module has been incorporated into two well-known statistical translation architectures: a phrase-based system and a Statistical Finite State Transducer (SFST). This system has been developed for a specific application domain: the renewal of Identity Documents and Driver's License. In order to evaluate the system a parallel corpus made up of 4080 Spanish sentences and their LSE translation has been used. The evaluation results revealed a significant performance improvement when including this preprocessing module. In the phrase-based system, the proposed module has given rise to an increase in BLEU (Bilingual Evaluation Understudy) from 73.8% to 81.0% and an increase in the human evaluation score from 0.64 to 0.83. In the case of SFST, BLEU increased from 70.6% to 78.4% and the human evaluation score from 0.65 to 0.82
