Modelling the descent of nitric oxide during the elevated stratopause event of January 2013

Using simulations with a whole-atmosphere chemistry-climate model nudged by meteorological analyses, global satellite observations of nitrogen oxide (NO) and water vapour by the Sub-Millimetre Radiometer instrument (SMR), of temperature by the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS), as well as local radar observations, this study examines the recent major stratospheric sudden warming accompanied by an elevated stratopause event (ESE) that occurred in January 2013. We examine dynamical processes during the ESE, including the role of planetary wave, gravity wave and tidal forcing on the initiation of the descent in the mesosphere-lower thermosphere (MLT) and its continuation throughout the mesosphere and stratosphere, as well as the impact of model eddy diffusion. We analyse the transport of NO and find the model underestimates the large descent of NO compared to SMR observations. We demonstrate that the discrepancy arises abruptly in the MLT region at a time when the resolved wave forcing and the planetary wave activity increase, just before the elevated stratopause reforms. The discrepancy persists despite doubling the model eddy diffusion. While the simulations reproduce an enhancement of the semi-diurnal tide following the onset of the 2013 SSW, corroborating new meteor radar observations at high northern latitudes over Trondheim (63.4∘^{\circ}N), the modelled tidal contribution to the forcing of the mean meridional circulation and to the descent is a small portion of the resolved wave forcing, and lags it by about ten days

Uncertainty quantification for functional dependent random variables

    Get PDF
International audienceThis paper proposes a new methodology to quantify the uncertainties associated to multiple dependent functional random variables, linked to a quantity of interest, called the covariate. The proposed methodology is composed of two main steps. First, the functional random variables are decomposed on a functional basis. The decomposition basis is computed by the proposed Simultaneous Partial Least Squares algorithm which enables to decompose simultaneously all the functional variables. Second, the joint probability density function of the coefficients of the decomposition associated to the functional variables is modelled by a Gaussian mixture model. A new method to estimate the parameters of the Gaussian mixture model based on a Lasso penalization algorithm is proposed. This algorithm enables to estimate sparse covariance matrices, in order to reduce the number of model parameters to be estimated. Several criteria are proposed to assess the efficiency of the methodology. Finally, its performance is shown on an analytical example and on a nuclear reliability test case

Onomastic and parody in the CrepĂșsculon cartoon saga

The myth of the vampire inspired many literary and audio-visual creations. Some of them tried to seduce a young audience. This is the case of the Twilight saga films (adaptation of the Stephenie Meyer novels), that the four Spanish comics of the cycle CrepĂșsculon want to parody. We will studyCrepĂșsculon adopting an exclusively linguistic approach and more precisely, in this article, an onomastic approach, through rhetorical tropes

Linguistic references to spaces in Paco Roca’s Los surcos del azar: a rewriting of history?

    Get PDF
The Paco Roca’s graphic novel Los surcos del azar depicts Spanish Republican Miguel Ruiz's itinerary in his fight against fascism during the Second World War. Numerous spaces are thus covered or evoked during the mentioned historical events. Representation and perception of space and history are inseparable, and it seems that the writing of space could, on its own, rewrite history, as we will try to demonstrate by adopting an exclusively linguistic approach
