Low-power digital processor for wireless sensor networks
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2005.Includes bibliographical references (p. 69-72).In order to make sensor networks cost-effective and practical, the electronic components of a wireless sensor node need to run for months to years on the same battery. This thesis explores the design of a low-power digital processor for these sensor nodes, employing techniques such as hardwired algorithms, lowered supply voltages, clock gating and subsystem shutdown. Prototypes were built on both a FPGA and ASIC platform, in order to verify functionality and characterize power consumption. The resulting 0.18[micro]m silicon fabricated in National Semiconductor Corporation's process was operational for supply voltages ranging from 0.5V to 1.8V. At the lowest operating voltage of 0.5V and a frequency of 100KHz, the chip performs 8 full-accuracy FFT computations per second and draws 1.2nJ of total energy per cycle. Although this energy/cycle metric does not surpass existing low-energy processors demonstrated in literature or commercial products, several low-power techniques are suggested that could drastically improve the energy metrics of a future implementation.by Daniel Frederic Finchelstein.S.M
Para una historia global del populismo:: rupturas y continuidades
The historical globality of populism seems to be a paradox, because it is precisely those nationalist and populistideologues who accuse their enemies of “globalists”, and who also present themselves as young actors, withouthistorical background, or even as the result of a new chapter in the history of the world, which the currentleader of the White House has called “the Trump era.” In theory, the new populists are extremist nationalistswho claim to want to put their countries above all else. In practice, these nationalists form a new internationalright, both for their works and for their similarities. None of this is new in the history of populism. This textanalyzes the history of this continuity and indicates its ruptures.
Low-power techniques for video decoding
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2009.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 149-156).The H.264 video coding standard can deliver high compression efficiency at a cost of large complexity and power. The increasing popularity of video capture and playback on portable devices requires that the energy of the video processing be kept to a minimum. This work implements several architecture optimizations that reduce the system power of a high-definition video decoder. In order to decode high resolutions at low voltages and low frequencies, we employ techniques such as pipelining, unit parallelism, multiple cores, and multiple voltage/frequency domains. For example, a 3-core decoder can reduce the required clock frequency by 2.91 x, which enables a power reduction of 61% relative to a full-voltage single-core decoder. To reduce the total memory system power, several caching techniques are demonstrated that can dramatically reduce the off-chip memory bandwidth and power at the cost of increased chip area. A 123 kB data-forwarding cache can reduce the read bandwidth from external memory by 53%, which leads to 44% power savings in the memory reads. To demonstrate these low-power ideas, a H.264/AVC Baseline Level 3.2 decoder ASIC was fabricated in 65 nm CMOS and verified. It operates down to 0.7 V and has a measured power down to 1.8 mW when decoding a high definition 720p video at 30 frames per second, which is over an order of magnitude lower than previously published results.by Daniel Frederic Finchelstein.Ph.D
Decoder Hardware Architecture for HEVC
This chapter provides an overview of the design challenges faced in the implementation of hardware HEVC decoders. These challenges can be attributed to the larger and diverse coding block sizes and transform sizes, the larger interpolation filter for motion compensation, the increased number of steps in intra prediction and the introduction of a new in-loop filter. Several solutions to address these implementation challenges are discussed. As a reference, results for an HEVC decoder test chip are also presented.Texas Instruments Incorporate
The rise of digital entrepreneurship in Latin America
Objective: This article discusses why digital start-ups are flourishing in Latin America. Method: Our research setting is Latin American digital companies. Our analysis is based on digital companies from Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, and Colombia. We examined lists of Latin unicorn companies (valuation + US$ 1B) and other prominent digital companies compiled from available sources from CB Insights, and TechCrunch. We systematically gathered data on the companies’ growth trajectory from data sources, including online material from the companies’ official websites and public reports, press releases, and press interviews made by the heads of the companies, and internal reports. Main Results: The article discusses the drivers behind the scaling and expansion of digital start-ups and the increasing maturity of the entrepreneurial ecosystems that support them. Relevance / Originality: While Latin digital companies have gained media and investors’ attention, there is scant analysis of how these companies have surpassed the startup stage and scaled up their operations. Theoretical / Methodological Contributions: Our contribution focuses on understanding Latin America's particular conditions and the impact of digital ventures on the region's business landscape. We bring practical insights on how Latin American digital companies are growing, as digital entrepreneurship is experiencing an extraordinary growth route in the region and is linked to economic growth and innovation
Becoming a Multilatina: strategic capabilities as necessary conditions for the internationalization of Latin American firms
Purpose: This study aims to challenge the generic interpretation of Multilatinas as Latin American firms that have been able to internationalize because of highly competitive strategic capabilities. The authors test whether capabilities that international business researchers commonly associate with internationalization are necessary at different stages of the internationalization process to better understand the extent to which emerging market (EM) firms need to develop them. Design/methodology/approach: International business research suggests a positive association between strategic capabilities and firm internalization. However, it remains unclear what specific capabilities are necessary and when they are necessary. These questions are particularly important in the context of the internationalization of firms from emerging economies, such as Latin America. The authors apply necessary condition analysis (NCA) on a sample of Latin American firms at different internationalization stages to test what strategic capabilities represent necessary conditions for becoming a Multilatina. Findings: The findings suggest that only a few strategic capabilities are necessary for Latin American firms to become “Multilatinas”. While entrepreneurial orientation and marketing and sales capabilities represent necessary conditions, EM firms may internationalize even though other capabilities are developed to a lesser extent. The authors reflect on how shifts in local markets and technology drive the emergence of different types of Multilatinas. Research limitations/implications: Measuring strategic capabilities across multiple EM firms implies a risk that firm-specific aspects are not fully captured. While the authors focused on the comparative competitive strength of capabilities and took great care to minimize measurement error, the authors acknowledge possible bias. Also, while NCA does not require a minimum sample size, findings from our sample of firms from four countries may not generalize to the region or other EMs. Originality/value: As a relatively new statistical technique, the use of NCA has spread rapidly. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the linkage between organizational capabilities and firm internationalization has not been tested from a necessary conditions perspective yet. The reflections on the “Multilatina” concept based on the notion of EM firms as configurations of strategic capabilities inform current debates on EM multinational enterprises
Mirroring Opposition Threats
Hugo Chávez and his Bolivarian Movement came to power in 1999 promising to refound the Venezuelan state and restructure the polity in ways that would build “popular power” through the promotion of grassroots participation, organization, and mobilization. Once in office, the Bolivarian forces launched a series of initiatives to sponsor organization and mobilization among supporters, which ranged widely in their functions and strategic purpose. State-mobilized organizations can be seen as operating in three different arenas of politics: the local governance arena; the electoral arena; and the protest arena. From an ideological standpoint, the Bolivarian Movement was oriented toward sponsoring organizations that could operate in the first of these arenas, helping realize Chávez’s vision of constructing a “protagonistic democracy” by establishing vehicles for citizen participation in local governance. In the terminology of this volume, these activities are best seen as a form of “infrastructural mobilization,” working to solidify political support and achieve the government’s longer-term aims
