    A new asymptotic approximate model for the Vlasov-Maxwell equations

    AbstractIn this paper, we derive a new asymptotic approximation of the Vlasov-Maxwell equations. This formulation follows the beam in a speed-of-light frame. It is fourth order accurate in the small characteristic velocity of the beam. The formulation is simpler than standard particle-in-cell methods in the lab frame or in the beam frame. It promises to be very powerful in its ability to get an accurate, but fast and easy to implement algorithm

    Time reversal methods in acousto-elastodynamics

    The aim of the article is to solve an inverse problem in order to determine the presence and some properties of an elastic “inclusion” (an unknown object, characterized by elastic properties discriminant from the surrounding medium) from partial observa- tions of acoustic waves, scattered by the inclusion. The method will require developing techniques based on Time Reversal methods. A finite element method based on varia- tional acousto-elastodynamics formulation will be derived and used to solve to solve the forward, and then, the time reversed problem. A criterion, derived from the reverse time migration framework, is introduced, to help use to construct images of the inclusions to be determined. Our approach will be applied to configurations modeling breast cancer detection, using simulated ultrasound waves

    On Maximal Unbordered Factors

    Given a string SS of length nn, its maximal unbordered factor is the longest factor which does not have a border. In this work we investigate the relationship between nn and the length of the maximal unbordered factor of SS. We prove that for the alphabet of size σ≄5\sigma \ge 5 the expected length of the maximal unbordered factor of a string of length~nn is at least 0.99n0.99 n (for sufficiently large values of nn).     Developmental Language disorders (DLD) are developmental disorders that can affect both expressive and receptive language. When severe and persistent, they are often associated with psychiatric comorbidities and poor social outcome. The development of language involves early parent-infant interactions. The quality of these interactions is reflected in the quality of the child's attachment patterns. We hypothesized that children with DLD are at greater risk of insecure attachment, making them more vulnerable to psychiatric comorbidities. Therefore, we investigated the patterns of attachment of children with expressive and mixed expressive- receptive DLD. Forty-six participants, from 4 years 6 months to 7 years 5 months old, 12 with expressive Specific Language Impairment (DLD), and 35 with mixed DLD, were recruited through our learning disorder clinic, and compared to 23 normally developing children aged 3 years and a half. The quality of attachment was measured using the Attachment Stories Completion Task (ASCT) developed by Bretherton. Children with developmental mixed language disorders were significantly less secure and more disorganized than normally developing children. Investigating the quality of attachment in children with DLD in the early stages could be important to adapt therapeutic strategies and to improve their social and psychiatric outcomes later in life

    On embeddings of CAT(0) cube complexes into products of trees

    We prove that the contact graph of a 2-dimensional CAT(0) cube complex X{\bf X} of maximum degree Δ\Delta can be coloured with at most Ï”(Δ)=MΔ26\epsilon(\Delta)=M\Delta^{26} colours, for a fixed constant MM. This implies that X{\bf X} (and the associated median graph) isometrically embeds in the Cartesian product of at most Ï”(Δ)\epsilon(\Delta) trees, and that the event structure whose domain is X{\bf X} admits a nice labeling with Ï”(Δ)\epsilon(\Delta) labels. On the other hand, we present an example of a 5-dimensional CAT(0) cube complex with uniformly bounded degrees of 0-cubes which cannot be embedded into a Cartesian product of a finite number of trees. This answers in the negative a question raised independently by F. Haglund, G. Niblo, M.     A verified algorithm enumerating event structures

    An event structure is a mathematical abstraction modeling concepts as causality, conflict and concurrency between events. While many other mathematical structures, including groups, topological spaces, rings, abound with algorithms and formulas to generate, enumerate and count particular sets of their members, no algorithm or formulas are known to generate or count all the possible event structures over af inite set of events. We present an algorithm to generate such a family, along with a functional implementation verified using Isabelle/HOL. As byproducts, we obtain a verified enumeration of all possible preorders and partial orders. While the integer sequences counting preorders and partial orders are already listed on OEIS (On-line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences), the one counting event structures is not. We therefore used our algorithm to submit a formally verified addition, which has been successfully reviewed and is now part of the OEIS.Postprin

    Numerical approximation of the Euler-Maxwell model in the quasineutral limit

    International audienceWe derive and analyze an Asymptotic-Preserving scheme for the Euler-Maxwell system in the quasi-neutral limit. We prove that the linear stability condition on the time-step is independent of the scaled Debye length λ\lambda when λ→0\lambda \to 0. Numerical validation performed on Riemann initial data and for a model Plasma Opening Switch device show that the AP-scheme is convergent to the Euler-Maxwell solution when Δx/λ→0\Delta x/ \lambda \to 0 where Δx\Delta x is the spatial discretization. But, when λ/Δx→0\lambda /\Delta x \to 0, the AP-scheme is consistent with the quasi-neutral Euler-Maxwell system. The scheme is also perfectly consistent with the Gauss equation. The possibility of using large time and space steps leads to several orders of magnitude reductions in computer time and storage

    AOSpine Consensus Paper on Nomenclature for Working-Channel Endoscopic Spinal Procedures

    Study Design: International consensus paper on a unified nomenclature for full-endoscopic spine surgery. Objectives: Minimally invasive endoscopic spinal procedures have undergone rapid development during the past decade. Evolution of working-channel endoscopes and surgical instruments as well as innovation in surgical techniques have expanded the types of spinal pathology that can be addressed. However, there is in the literature a heterogeneous nomenclature defining approach corridors and procedures, and this lack of common language has hampered communication between endoscopic spine surgeons, patients, hospitals, and insurance providers. Methods: The current report summarizes the nomenclature reported for working-channel endoscopic procedures that address cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spinal pathology. Results: We propose a uniform system that defines the working-channel endoscope (full-endoscopic), approach corridor (anterior, posterior, interlaminar, transforaminal), spinal segment (cervical, thoracic, lumbar), and procedure performed (eg, discectomy, foraminotomy). We suggest the following nomenclature for the most common full-endoscopic procedures: posterior endoscopic cervical foraminotomy (PECF), transforaminal endoscopic thoracic discectomy (TETD), transforaminal endoscopic lumbar discectomy (TELD), transforaminal lumbar foraminotomy (TELF), interlaminar endoscopic lumbar discectomy (IELD), interlaminar endoscopic lateral recess decompression (IE-LRD), and lumbar endoscopic unilateral laminotomy for bilateral decompression (LE-ULBD). Conclusions: We believe that it is critical to delineate a consensus nomenclature to facilitate uniformity of working-channel endoscopic procedures within academic scholarship. This will hopefully facilitate development, standardization of procedures, teaching, and widespread acceptance of full-endoscopic spinal procedures

    Serum Neurotrophin Profile in Systemic Sclerosis

    International audienceBACKGROUND: Neurotrophins (NTs) are able to activate lymphocytes and fibroblasts; they can modulate angiogenesis and sympathic vascular function. Thus, they can be implicated in the three pathogenic processes of systemic sclerosis (SSc). The aims of this study are to determine blood levels of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) and Neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) in SSc and to correlate them with clinical and biological data.METHODS: Serum samples were obtained from 55 SSc patients and 32 control subjects to measure NTs levels by ELISA and to determine their relationships with SSc profiles. FINDINGS: Serum NGF levels were higher in SSc patients (288.26 ± 170.34 pg/mL) than in control subjects (170.34 ± 50.8 pg/mL, p<0.001) and correlated with gammaglobulins levels and the presence of both anti-cardiolipin and anti-Scl-70 antibodies (p<0.05). In contrast, BDNF levels were lower in SSc patients than in controls (1121.9 ± 158.1 vs 1372.9 ± 190.9 pg/mL, p<0.0001), especially in pulmonary arterial hypertension and diffuse SSc as compared to limited forms (all p<0.05). NT-3 levels were similar in SSc and in the control group (2657.2 ± 2296 vs 2959.3 ± 2555 pg/mL, NS). BDNF levels correlated negatively with increased NGF levels in the SSc group (and not in controls). CONCLUSION: Low BDNF serum levels were not previously documented in SSc, particularly in the diffuse SSc subset and in patients with pulmonary hypertension or anti-Scl-70 antibodies. The negative correlation between NGF and BDNF levels observed in SSc and not in healthy controls could be implicated in sympathic vascular dysfunction in SSc
