    Possible Vertical Transmission of Bartonella bacilliformis in Peru

    A 22-day-old male was admitted with a 2-day history of irritability, dyspnea, jaundice, fever, and gastrointestinal bleeding. A thin blood smear was performed, which showed the presence of intraerythrocyte bacteria identified as Bartonella bacilliformis, and subsequently, the child was diagnosed with Carrion's disease. The diagnosis was confirmed by specific polymerase chain reaction. The child was born in a non-endemic B. bacilliformis area and had not traveled to such an area before hospitalization. However, the mother was from an endemic B. bacilliformis area, and posterior physical examination showed the presence of a wart compatible with B. bacilliformis in semi-immune subjects. These data support vertical transmission of B. bacilliformis

    Lethal Concentration of Carbonate OF Ca as a Function of the Osmotic Potential of the Solution in Sunflower (Heliantusannuus L.)

    In order to know the effect of CaCO3 in solution, sunflower seedlings cv. Victoria, an experiment was completely randomized, where five concentrations of calcium carbonate were evaluated to determine the lethal concentration (LC50), pH and EC of the solution under laboratory conditions in the Universidad Tecnologica de Tehuacan, to simulate of excess Ca++ in the soils or nutrient solution. The results indicate, the LC50 was 62.8 mg CaCO3 L-1, so maximum values for pH, EC and calcium absorption, They were achieved at concentrations of 120 and 160 mg L-1 of CaCO3. This work can be concluded, Sunflower can absorb the high levels of calcium and used as an alternative, for remediation of agricultural soils affected hard water and Ca++ salts

    Faint recombination lines in Galactic PNe with [WC] nucleus

    We present spatially resolved high-resolution spectrophotometric data for the planetary nebulae PB8, NGC2867, and PB6. We have analyzed two knots in NGC2867 and PB6 and one in PB8. The three nebulae are ionized by [WC] type nuclei: early [WO] for PB6 and NGC2867 and [WC 5-6] in the case of PB8. Our aim is to study the behavior of the abundance discrepancy problem (ADF) in this type of PNe. We measured a large number of optical recombination (ORL) and collisionally excited lines (CEL), from different ionization stages (many more than in any previous work), thus, we were able to derive physical conditions from many different diagnostic procedures. We determined ionic abundances from the available collisionally excited lines and recombination lines. Based on both sets of ionic abundances, we derived total chemical abundances in the nebulae using suitable ionization correction factors. From CELs, we have found abundances typical of Galactic disk planetary nebulae. Moderate ADF(O++) were found for PB8 (2.57) and NGC2867 (1.63). For NGC2867, abundances from ORLs are higher but still consistent with Galactic disk planetary nebulae. On the contrary, PB8 presents a very high O/H ratio from ORLs. A high C/O was obtained from ORLs for NGC2867; this ratio is similar to C/O obtained from CELs and with the chemical composition of the wind of the central star, indicating that there was no further C-enrichment in the star, relative to O, after the nebular material ejection. On the contrary, we found C/O<1 in PB8. Interestingly, we obtain (C/O)ORLs/(C/O)CELs < 1 in PB8 and NGC2867; this added to the similarity between the heliocentric velocities measured in [OIII] and OII lines for our three objects, argue against the presence of H-deficient metal-rich knots coming from a late thermal pulse event.Comment: 25 pages, 13 Tables, 4 Figures Accepted for publication in A&A.     Towards airborne laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy: A signal recovery method for LIBS instruments subjected to vibrations

    Sample or instrument vibrations can scatter laser impacts across the sample surface, which increases the uncertainty of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) measurements. The common sources of noise associated to mechanical vibration are described and a method for isolating LIBS measurements from artifacts introduced by such fluctuations is presented. The approach circumvents the use of mechanical stabilizers by leveraging simple components common in LIBS systems. A camera was used to capture close-up images of the sample for each laser shot and the laser spot position in the sample surface was measured using common image processing techniques. By associating spectra with spatial coordinates in the sample surface, it was possible to reduce the relative standard deviation of the Cu(I) 427.51 nm signal in a patterned Cu/Al sample from 122.0% to 53.31%, similar to that measured for a pure Cu sample in the same vibration conditions. The spatial resolution of the method was found to depend on the laser spot diameter, the illuminance at the sample, the camera sensitivity and trigger insertion delay, and the speed of the laser beam sweeping the sample surface. The spatial resolution obtained with the setup used was ±0.6 mm at 15 m, i.e., 40 μm per meter of separation between the instrument and the sample with a vibration speed limit of 12 cm·s−1.The authors would like to express their gratitude to Carlos Malagon ´of Astroshop (Málaga, Spain) for donating the telescope used in the stand-off LIBS instrument.     Multimodal sensory reliance in the nocturnal homing of the amblypygid \u3ci\u3ePhrynus pseudoparvulus\u3c/i\u3e (Class Arachnida, Order Amblypygi)?

    Like many other nocturnal arthropods, the amblypygid Phrynus pseudoparvulus is capable of homing. The environment through which these predators navigate is a dense and heterogeneous tropical forest understory and the mechanism(s) underlying their putatively complex navigational abilities are presently unknown. This study explores the sensory inputs that might facilitate nocturnal navigation in the amblypygid P. pseudoparvulus. Specifically, we use sensory system manipulations in conjunction with field displacements to examine the potential involvement of multimodal—olfactory and visual—stimuli in P. pseudoparvulus’ homing behavior. In a first experiment, we deprived individuals of their olfactory capacity and displaced them to the opposite side of their home trees (\u3c5 m). We found that olfaction-intact individuals were more likely to be re-sighted in their home refuges than olfaction-deprived individuals. In a second experiment, we independently manipulated both olfactory and visual sensory capacities in conjunction with longer-distance displacements (8 m) from home trees. We found that sensory-intact individuals tended to be re-sighted on their home tree more often than sensory-deprived individuals, with a stronger effect of olfactory deprivation than visual deprivation. Comparing across sensory modality manipulations, olfaction-manipulated individuals took longer to return to their home trees than vision-manipulated individuals. Together, our results indicate that olfaction is important in the nocturnal navigation of P. pseudoparvulus and suggest that vision may also play a more minor role

    Clinical and structural brain correlates of hypomimia in early-stage Parkinson's disease

However, the neural correlates of hypomimia and the relationship between hypomimia and other non-motor symptoms of PD are poorly understood. Methods: The clinical and structural brain correlates of hypomimia were studied. For this purpose, cross-sectional data from the COPPADIS study database were used. Age, disease duration, levodopa equivalent daily dose, Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale part III (UPDRS-III), severity of apathy and depression and global cognitive status were collected. At the imaging level, analyses based on gray matter volume and cortical thickness were used. Results: After controlling for multiple confounding variables such as age or disease duration, the severity of hypomimia was shown to be indissociable from the UPDRS-III speech and bradykinesia items and was significantly related to the severity of apathy (β = 0.595; p < 0.0001). At the level of neural correlates, hypomimia was related to motor regions brodmann area 8 (BA 8) and to multiple fronto-temporo-parietal regions involved in the decoding, recognition and production of facial expression of emotions. Conclusion: Reduced facial expressivity in PD is related to the severity of symptoms of apathy and is mediated by the dysfunction of brain systems involved in motor control and in the recognition, integration and expression of emotions. Therefore, hypomimia in PD may be conceptualized not exclusively as a motor symptom but as a consequence of a multidimensional deficit leading to a symptom where motor and non-motor aspects converge
